Drugs, helicopters seized by police on both sides of border - FULL STORY

Authorities arrest nine, seize two helicopters in massive drug bust
ROBERT MATAS

From Wednesday's Globe and Mail

March 24, 2009 at 9:54 PM EDT

VANCOUVER — Nine people have been arrested in connection with an international drug ring that relied on helicopters to leap across the 49th parallel, taking B.C. marijuana to remote sites in the northwestern United States and bringing cocaine and cash back to Canada.

Authorities seized two helicopters, around 300 kilograms of marijuana known as B.C. bud, 83 kg of cocaine and 40,000 ecstasy pills during a cross-border investigation dubbed Operation Blade Runner. Police estimated the street value of the drugs at more than $14-million.

At a news conference in Seattle yesterday to announce the arrests, police linked the Canadian-based marijuana and cocaine smuggling ring to the violent gangland drug wars over the past two months on the streets of Vancouver and its suburbs.

However, the arrests were unlikely to stem the drug trade in B.C., U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Sullivan told reporters.

“We've stopped at least this group, we believe, and crippled this part of the organization. Will somebody take their place? Unfortunately, probably,” Mr. Sullivan said.

Despite his pessimism, Mr. Sullivan warned the drug smugglers that authorities on both sides of the border intend to go after them.

“We're here [at the news conference], all of us, to ensure they know we're here. We're coming and we're going to try and get their assets, we're going to try and steal their dope, we're going to try and get their money and we are going to try and put them in prison for as long as possible,” he said.

Operation Blade Runner – so named for the use of helicopters in cross-border smuggling – led to the arrest of eight Canadians and one U.S. citizen. One of the Canadians, 24-year-old Samuel Lindsay-Brown of Revelstoke, B.C., hanged himself in a Spokane County jail cell four days after he was arrested.

Investigators believe the drug ring has been in operation for more than a year, with shipments around once a week.

The investigation began on Feb. 21, when Utah highway patrol in Salt Lake City stopped Ross Legge, 53, of Alberta, and Leonard Ferris, 50, of Las Vegas, the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle said.

Law enforcement officers found 83 kg of cocaine in the car. They also discovered a link between one of the men and an ecstasy smuggling ring that had been prosecuted in Washington state last year. At the news conference, Mr. Sullivan declined to provide any additional details about the link.

Based on information from the traffic stop, law enforcement officers were waiting at a remote site in the Colville National Forest outside Ione, Wash., two days later when a $1-million Bell 200 Jet Ranger helicopter landed. Mr. Lindsay-Brown was arrested as he was unloading B.C. bud from the helicopter, police said. The officers found 193 kg of marijuana aboard the aircraft.

Mr. Lindsay-Brown was not on a suicide watch, jail officials told a Spokane newspaper, The Spokesman-Review. An autopsy report stated that Mr. Lindsay-Brown died from strangulation. He was alone in a cell, jammed a bed sheet into a wall light fixture and hanged himself, according to the newspaper report.

The helicopter was returned to the leasing company, which police believe provided the aircraft unwittingly to the drug ring.

The smuggling ring attempted another shipment of marijuana six days later. A Robinson R22 helicopter flew from a landing zone outside Nelson to a remote area in northern Idaho. U.S. authorities arrested Jeremy Snow, 29, of Kelowna after finding 79 kg of marijuana on the aircraft. The helicopter had been reported in B.C. to be stolen. However, the officers were skeptical and seized the chopper.

In Canada, the RCMP arrested two men from Chilliwack, ages 48 and 20, who were on their way to the helicopter landing site. Police found an additional 64 kg of marijuana and 40,000 ecstasy pills. They also discovered a loaded 40-calibre handgun in the Chilliwack men's hotel rooms and a nearby storage trailer. The RCMP said they could not release the names of those arrested in Canada for privacy reasons.

They also arrested a 37-year-old man in Malakwa, B.C., and a 35-year-old man in Salmon Arm who had three handguns, a shotgun and a rifle at his home, police said. RCMP Staff Sergeant Dave Goddard declined to release any of their names until charges are formally laid.

The RCMP arrested Sean Doak, 35, as part of the drug ring. His name was released because he was on parole at the time for an unrelated matter and his name was already in the public domain, Staff Sgt. Goddard told reporters.

U.S. authorities said they hope the Canadians who are charged as a result of Operation Blade Runner will be extradited to stand trial in the United States. Staff Sgt. Goddard said he anticipated people will be prosecuted on both sides of the border.

In a highly co-ordinated effort that stretched across the international boundary, 10 different agencies in Canada and the U.S. worked together on the investigation, including the RCMP, the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Police bust huge cross-border drug operation

Drugs, helicopters seized by police on both sides of border

VANCOUVER/SEATTLE - RCMP in southeastern B.C. and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration say they've busted a major drug smuggling operation that was exchanging marijuana for cocaine across the Canada/U.S. border.  RCMP say the joint police operation seized a large quantity of drugs and two helicopters.

Seven Canadian men and one American man have been charged, and one Canadian suspect committed suicide while in U.S. police custody.  More information about the cross-border drug bust will be released tomorrow at a news conference in Seattle.

Sounds like our gang problems in Vancouver are about to get worse :frown:

UPDATE:

Looks like it happened awhile ago and they are now just executing the rest of their busts
Unless there are several people hanging themselves and using helicopters to smuggle drugs:

Man found hanging in cell had been busted in delivery arranged by DEA

SPOKANE, Wash. — Washington state police say a Canadian man accused of smuggling marijuana by helicopter has hanged himself in the Spokane County Jail.

Samuel Lindsay-Brown, from Revelstoke, B.C., was alone in the cell where he was found Friday hanging by a bedsheet from a light fixture.

Police are investigating the death.

The 24-year-old had been charged with possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver.

He was arrested Feb. 23 unloading more than 150 kilograms of BC bud from a helicopter in a remote spot in the Colville National Forest.

The delivery had been arranged by undercover Drug Enforcement Administration agents.

This sounds like such an awesome idea.
Let's have a ragingly out-of-control drug war on BOTH borders. Go America!

That's not what I was getting at....

In Vancouver, BC there is a big gang war going on over the dwindling supply of coke.

This means the coke supply just got cut off even more.

No, I know. BC'ian myself. I see it on the news every night. So, we have more people fighting over less drugs who now have even MORE reason to be angry and violent. It's busts and behavior like this that exacerbate this idiotic cycle of violence, and we keep supporting America's failed policy out of fear that they'll impose some sort of sanctions on us for not towing the line.

Daredevil's Final Act
A young Canadian mountain biker, facing U.S. drug charges, takes his own life in Spokane’s jail
Kevin Taylor

Any suicide leaves behind painful, unanswered questions, but the hanging death three weeks ago of Samuel Jackson Lindsay-Brown leaves more than most.

In addition to the searing questions for family and friends over why he ended his life, no information has yet been released about Lindsay-Brown’s involvement in the murky world of cross-border drug smuggling and why undercover agents busted him when they did. His passing has become big news across western Canada, where he is seen as a casualty in the U.S. government’s war on drugs.

The 24-year-old Canadian was arrested Feb. 23 on federal drug trafficking charges after flying a helicopter bearing 350 pounds of marijuana over the border in crappy weather at night. Lindsay-Brown landed in a clearing in the Colville National Forest to rendezvous with men who turned out to be undercover agents with the Drug Enforcement Administration.

He was booked into the Spokane County Jail Feb. 24 and, using ingenuity and a bed sheet, hanged himself in his cell three days later.

His loss is keenly felt in the tight-knit world of mountain bikers, where a tribute site soon appeared on the Web and continues to draw postings that mourn Lindsay-Brown’s death as well as videos of his daredevil riding feats and stories of his charisma and skill.

“He was an amazing trail builder and an acclaimed rider,” says Cam McRae, editor of the North Shore Mountain Biking Website, who set up the tribute that appears at nsmb.com and pinkbike.com.

“I only met him the once, and that was nearly 10 years ago, but he really came across as a special kind of person,” McRae says. “He was riding around on sharp-edged pedals in bare feet. He looked like a forest elf — gentle, soft-spoken. His appearance and demeanor were really striking.”

McRae and some friends had just finished riding a trail known as the Monster, near Kaslo, which he and others say is among the best they've ever ridden, a trail largely built by Lindsay-Brown. Another legendary feature Lindsay-Brown constructed is the Disconstructed Wheel, a towering wooden hamster wheel.

Lindsay-Brown displayed the same level of ingenuity when it came to ending his life in a jail cell designed to foil suicide attempts.

“Jail cells have been refined to the point where it is very difficult to do that,” says Sgt. Joe Peterson of the Spokane Police Major Crimes Unit.

Peterson, recounting the investigation into the death, says Lindsay-Brown was alone after his cellmate was taken to court at 9 am. All appeared normal when lunch was served at 11:30.

It was about 1:20 pm when a trustee walked past the cell and noticed a towel obscuring the window in the door. Fifteen minutes earlier there had been no towel, the trustee says. The trustee alerted guards who found Lindsay-Brown hanging by a bed sheet from a wall-mounted light fixture.

The fixture is rounded and downward sloping to prevent suicide, Peterson says, but Lindsay-Brown worked it free just far enough from the wall so he could jam the sheet behind the base where it would hold his weight.

“He seemed very committed,” to ending his life, Peterson says, adding that Lindsay-Brown gave no indication of despair to jailers, his cellmate or other inmates.

He left a note detailing his wishes for the distribution of his property. His father came down last week to claim the body and take it home.

No media has been able to reach family members. Brandon Adams, a reporter with the Revelstoke Times Review, says the family lives in a remote area known as Big Eddy. McRae says he was told the family lives a seven-mile hike from the nearest road.

The DEA is refusing to comment on the investigation, as are Canadian authorities. Which leaves only the online memories such as this:

“We always used to refer to him as ‘Smiles,’ as that’s all he would do, just smile and love life everyday as much as he could. He showed us all how to really appreciate life,” writes surfnsteve13, who is organizing a tribute ride for Lindsay-Brown this spring.

This is insane, before he got jumped in the forest i bet he was having one of the best nights of his life...  Flying into the woods via helicopter in the dark with 400 pounds of BC would be the best day/night of my life.
