im thinking about selling my laptop and getting a decent gaming computer, desktop.
i was wondering..... couldnt i just buy a normal computer that has a dual processor and just upgrade the ram to 4 gigs and update the video card to 256mb's or higher?
what else makes a gaming pc a gaming pc? are there any decent brands i should look at? i would like to keep the price between 500-700 bucks.

Fuck buying brand name computers, they rip you off because you're paying for the brand name. Go to a computer shop and tell them you want a gaming computer for around $700 and they can build you one. I would personally spend at least a grand, it depends on how new the games are you want to play and how good you want them to look.
The cheapest possible way would be to buy individual parts off ebay and build the computer yourself/get a friend to build it, but that's a bit of a hassle if you don't know much about computers.

i agree with coaster. 8800 is a sick card...i use one in this laptop for gaming...but it's getting out dated. you can get a sweet 4870 which will outperform it for around 200.
here's one on newegg for 180 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102810
OR...you could just buy something like this straight from newegg and save yourself the trouble building it.

picking your own parts is fun but if you have no idea what you're doing i'd start with a pre-built one like this. that's only about $50 cheaper than the parts would cost you and it has a 1 year warranty. BTW - the don't get held up on the cyberpower logo - it's just a brand that builds PC's with other brand's parts and resells them - but it's all pretty top notch stuff.

I recently built my system for around 1500 which includes shipping and handling and this is what I ended up with.
AMD Phenom 9850 64bit Quad Core Black Box came running 2.8 GHz I am now running at 3.1 GHz
I super bad ass case
Biostar Motherboard (mid range price)
800 Watt Power Supply
SAPPHIRE 100259-1GL Radeon HD 4870 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0
8 GB of OCZ Platinum 1066 ram
60 gig solid state drive
740 gig Western Digital 7200 rpm storage drive
Logitech gaming mouse and keyboard combo
Acer 24" widescreen monitor running @ 1920x1280
DVD Burner
Vista Home Premium 64 bit
and a nice fan to keep my cpu cool
This computer will run any game out there. It is a beast. I mainly use it for my music programs, but I also enjoy games so I thought I would get something that would last a few years.

justin, thats not a bad pc at all, but i would still have to invest in a monitor which would put me way over my budget.
kung, thats INSANE!!!! i wish i had that kind of money to build a pc like that.

i just need to find a decent priced monitor now.
that looks like a pretty good deal, and that's a sick case for sure. the only thing is that the graphics card on that is terrible.
FYI the 9000 level nvidia cards have the same specs as the 8000 level they just run a little bit cooler and have a new design. that 9500 is still about 2 years outdated, and it would be significantly outperformed by an 8800 and possibly even an 8600.

instead of buying a whole new pc, couldnt i just do some upgrades on my laptop?
maybe add 2-3 more gigs of ram, a better video card, and a bigger fan along with a bigger power supply?
