Can the jars be cooled in the PC or do they need to be removed, and for what reason? Also why is the lid loosened a quarter turn? I see that these are common practices but its never been explained to me why its done that way. Btw first time grower. Good lab set up.  just inoculated 8 jars of wbs a week ago 4 B 4 mexican albino. Gonna use coir tek for colonizing 58qt monotubs

WBS is a great medium, just make sure you dont get the coated seed.

I says to myself, I says:"No simmer? Why not?" Because it was impossible for me to drain the grains well enough, that's why not. I let my bird seed drain for 2 hours with occasional shaking and stirring and still wasn't able to get it dry. After sterilizing, the WBS was wet enough to stick all over the inside of the jar. So my verdict is that this takes just as long as simmering and doesn't work as well.

If you're a person who worries about bursting the grains while simmering, this may be for you. I'll stick with soak and simmer, though.

This tek is outdated in a few ways:

1) Coffee filters are worthless as filters. Ignore this part.

2) Tyvek and other filters will be useless when wet. Be sure to just use tyvek in the order: jar, round jar lid with poked holes, tyvek, lid ring. Use small holes, and your tyvek will remain dry

3) Cover each jar in aluminum foil before pressure cooking. As above, wet tyvek = bad.  Aluminum foil will keep your pressure cooker from dripping onto it

4) Do not use a spoon to mix your spawn into your bulk substrate. Please review RogerRabbit's videos on Youtube, or order the full set for only $40.

5) Do not let your jars touch the PC as it is shown, and do not load them sideways. Water will splash onto the tyvek or the jar will touch the side, exposing it to disproportionate heat and cracking it.

Edit: The little square things are inoculation rings made of self-healing RTV silicone. Funny since the only one it's on is the one receiving the G2G transfer :/

Iteresting that you don't use al foil or anything durring the pressure cooking.

I like these lids, but as the last comment, what do you make those little square filter holders out of?

What are those little square things on the lids in the bottom picture?
