I put a cake in a pot with potting soil in some extra perolite. I left it outside in the shade for a few weeks not thinking much of it and it ended up yielding about 50 grams wet. Fiji strain.

I live in a latitude of 70 degrees North. Would this type of growing work in my area during spring/summer/fall? Also, I may not be using psilocybe cubensis. I will be making spore prints/spore syringes out of whatever shrooms I deem to work well/I can get my hands on. Just wondering if it will all work out. Thanks.

Dont you have to worry about contamination thought, i imagine it would be ground zero for 1000's of different funguses and spores?

When your doing an outside cultivation do you still have to worry about contamination and having contaminated shrooms growing ?

hey occollegeboi, you cant grow completely outside, risk of colonization failure or infection of mold.

So if you need to make the cakes INDOORS, what is the point of doing it outside? Is there anyway to COMPLETELY do a full outdoor inoculation and just have them grow?

what if i were to attempt this in a large cow pasture that had cow trails everywhere which have been crapped on for years, can i just mix in some straw and crumbled cakes?

The time you do this will depend on the temperature. Cubensis need around 24 to 30*C for the spores to grow then down to about 19 to 22*C to grow the acual mushrooms (don't quote me on that, look it up if you need to know exact temperatures). In the wild a lot of mushrooms spore through the summer then grow as autumn comes round, things get cooler and damper. Hence, there's no point in trying this in January when it's -3*C and 40cm of snow =P But obviously if you're in a hot country it might be a better idea to start growing in the autumn so they'll grow in the cooler winter air so look into your climate.

I actuly began growing outdoors by accsident when an old room mate found my spores growing in a bag of rye and (luckly?) thought it was just rotting food so he threw it under a hedge. I checked on it each day for 2 weeks 'till i saw them growing everywhere like crazy! Being envirnmentally concious I decided to do my bit and remove most of this "invasive speceies" ;) but it was by pure luck that the weather was'nt far behind optimal temperatures (about 18*C)  'cos a little later in the year and they probly would have died :(
