The calculations are definitely a bit heavy on the water for me.  Everybody has different grades of verm though, so best do the 'squeeze test' and bring it to field capacity.  I get best results adding water till there is a minute amount of unabsorbed water sitting in the bowl, then add a small amount of vermiculite to absorb this.

"Steam [Semi-]Sterilization"? When using brf cakes steam sterilization is just as effective as pressure cooking. The whole point of using brf cakes is so you don't have to PC sterilize;  there are no heat-resistant endospores in brf. That's why a PC is necessary for grains, because grains have heat-resistant endospores. More likely the reason for failure with steam is that your not steam sterilizing properly; a through steam sterilization should be 90 minutes of steaming, 60 minutes will often not kill all the contaminates in your jar.
