im going to try this but with rye grain method. i like the idea. i think its perfect for liqiuid cultures mycelium syringes, then innoculating threw the tinfoil, then remove and replace with the jar top facing up and on not fully tight for air exchange. and i totally agree that mycelium is alive and doesnt need air. but it is better to have some clean fresh air.

Im pretty much a noob also but i think your fine as far as contams go if you did it reasonabley safe but the gas exchange is an issue. Im thinking you could take a sterilized ice pick or something close and just lightly hammer four holes in lid. Be very careful because if you penitrated your dry verm layer to far then you may end up getting contam. I think without the holes you are not likely to get much of a result.

yeeaahhh... the inoculation holes in the canning lids double as gas exchange holes. mycelium is alive, and contrary to some peoples beliefs, it does need fresh air.

The foil has nothing to do with sterilization. Foil is there to keep water out of the jars while boiling or PC'ing and can be disposed of after that. The dry verm is a filter for contaminates. You took the lid of the jars, which is bad, and also now you have no holes for air to get in. You might get lucky, but I guess these jars will contaminate from you taking the lid off, or stall from no air.
