The 3 Steps

The Bag with syringe

Step 1

Inject your liquid culture or spores into your mushroom grow bag.

Step 2

Once the bag starts turning white (that stuff’s called “mycelium”), give it a shake to make sure the mycelium spreads throughout the whole bag.

Step 3

Once the bag turns completely white, your mycelium are ready to become mushrooms. Cut the bag open to give them some air and a little light (moisture helps too!).

Bon Appétit!

Your mushrooms should start sprouting in a week or two.

Liquid Culture & Spores

Liquid culture (commonly referred to as LC) and spores are the “seeds” of mushrooms. They are available in liquid form, in syringes, making them easy to inject into a Magic Bag. We recommend LC over spores, due to its faster growth and resilience against contamination. They are sold separately and can be purchased from a variety of online retailers. When you purchase a Magic Bag, your order confirmation email will include a list of trusted online liquid culture and spore retailers that we’ve partnered with.

Our Production

Our Production

The Magic Bag “offices” are located in a 4 bedroom family home in rural Northern California. Our mushroom grow bags are produced at our facility in rural Ohio. We are dedicated to an eco-friendly production process–we source our materials locally, choosing local Ohioan suppliers whenever possible. Our compost is always organic and free of pesticides and synthetics. Sterility is key in the field of mycology – we use top-of-the-line, commercial steam sterilizing autoclaves for a 2.5 hour sterilization period that ensures your Magic Bag is resilient to contamination

FAQ

The Magic Bag is designed to grow any “dung-loving” mushroom species and our directions are designed for dung-loving species. That said, our bags can successfully grow other culinary species as well. Shoot us an email if you have a specific culinary species (non-dung-loving) you’d like to grow with our bags and we’ll give you some tips for success.

We recommend using liquid culture (LC) in our mushroom grow bags instead of spores. Liquid culture is more resilient to contamination, grows faster, and the genetics can be isolated in a way that spores cannot. We recommend www.myyco.com for liquid culture. Use the code “magicbag” for 5% off your order.

Time is of the essence! Your mushroom grow bag should be injected with spores or liquid culture as soon as you receive it so the mycelium can establish itself on the growing medium and fend off any competing contaminants. Magic Bags are sterilized in a medical-grade autoclave right before they leave our facility so the sterility is highest when you first receive it. When it comes to mushroom cultivation—the more sterility, the better. If you’re not going to use your Magic Bag within a few days of receiving it, you can store it in a fridge for up to 3 weeks—but remember, the sooner you inject spores or LC, the better. The more time that goes by before you inject, the more risk there is for contamination.
Yes, although the Magic Bag differs from a typical mushroom grow kit—the Magic Bag is simpler and easier to use. Typically, grow kits contain tubs to transfer the mushrooms into prior to the fruiting stage (when the mushrooms start sprouting). Our mushroom grow bags streamline this process by allowing the user to fruit in the bag and avoid the possible contamination that could arise during the transfer process.
Because growing mushrooms requires a freshly sterilized and sealed environment, you can’t reuse our mushroom grow bags. Once it’s done producing mushrooms, the inside of the bag can be composted and the plastic bag can be recycled at a designated soft plastics recycling bin. But, don’t throw your bag away too soon—after the first “flush” (“crop”) of mushrooms, it will produce another 2 to 4 flushes over the next 1 to 2 weeks.
Grow times will vary depending on the strain you’re using but typically, your bag should start to produce mushrooms by the 8-12 week mark. Colder temperatures will prolong growing times.
You should inject 3 to 5 CC’s (mL) of spores or liquid culture into your mushroom grow bag. Too little, and there won’t be enough mycelium or spores to latch onto the substrate and grow. Too much, and the substrate will become too damp and susceptible to mold and mildew.
Our bags will produce around 2 to 3 ounces of dried mushrooms (which is equivalent to 2 to 3 lbs of fresh mushrooms).

Using the Magic Bag is simple. Here’s a quick video

Inject your liquid culture or spores into the mushroom grow bag. Keep it in a warm, dark environment with no light (between 72 and 78 degrees is ideal). Wait a few weeks. Once the bag starts turning white (that stuff’s called “mycelium”), give it a shake to make sure the mycelium spreads throughout the whole bag. Wait another few weeks. Once the bag turns completely white, your mycelium is ready to become mushrooms.

Cut the bag open to give it some air and a little light (a few mists of water from a spray bottle every few days helps too). Pin the top of the bag with the provided paper clip so it’s loosely closed with enough room for a little air to seep in.

Your Magic Bag should start producing mushrooms in another week or two. Pick them right before the cap separates from the stem. Your mushroom grow bag will keep producing mushrooms for another week or so (each crop of mushrooms is called a “flush” – your Magic Bag should produce 2 to 5 flushes). Once it’s done producing mushrooms, the insides of the bag can be composted and the plastic bag can be recycled in a designated soft plastics recycling bin.

Responsibly and with intention! Certain mushroom strains offer unique experiences. These experiences should be used as tools for healing and growth, and treated with the utmost respect. Employ diligent preparation to create a safe environment. Find your intention—why are you seeking the experience? Integration therapists and guides should be utilized.
