What are the gold flakes on the caps of my mushrooms?

The gold flakes people sometimes see on the dried caps and stems of their mushrooms is vermiculite. It is an inert substance used for water retention in the mini scale home cultivation of mushrooms.
It is an inert substance and eating it is likely harmless, but better to ingest as little as possible of it.
