First off, great article, it makes me very happy to see actual thought and effort put into these (extremely serious) problems. I applaud those brave enough to challenge the old ways.
Moving on...

"Why not slam 'em from the beginning and forget this foolishness?" says Karen Richards, county prosecutor in the Fort Wayne, Ind., area. The Urban League tried to convince her and the Fort Wayne police to try the strategy, but Ms. Richards didn't support it. She draws a distinction between addicts, who she believes should get social support, and dealers, who she believes deserve incarceration. "Drug dealers are drug dealers," she says. "They won't have an epiphany and end up as model citizens."
Sick, unintelligent people like Ms. Richards here are the cancer of our society. They hold positions of power and wield them like weapons.
The entire point of the legal system is correction.

This statement is among the most ignorant things I have heard from any authority figure, I can't even begin to emphasize the stupidity of this statement. People like this should not only lose their jobs, they should be put in prisons where they can learn how to conduct their lives in a constructive manner.

You seem to be forgetting, slamming them is the foolishness.

If we expect to move forward and avoid extinction, what we will need will be cultural progress- and we will all have to want it."
