Does anybody have step-by-step instructions for growing shiitake? 1

This is my step-by-step plan, but I am not sure about some parts...
1. Inoculate popcorn jars with shiitake agar culture 2. Store until full colonization (I am guessing that these jars will need to be stored in the dark somewhere between 70 and 90 degrees?) 3. Jars are fully colonized when they are completely white 4. Mix grain spawn into supplemented sawdust bags (Not sure of what spawn to sawdust ratio to use) 5. Allow sawdust bags to fully colonize
I am a little hazy about the rest of the procedure... I know that the blocks are supposed to turn completely brown before being placed into a fruiting chamber but what are the conditions needed for this? Do I need light, or dark? Certain temperatures? When do I dunk? What fruiting chamber conditions are needed? Also, approximately how long does this whole procedure take from grain spawn to actual fruits? Thanks!

I have not done a shiitake grow start to finish, but I have gotten several flushes off a kit from FP.
Your plan seems great. Step 3 is the only part I would change. Or at least play it by ear. My kit instructions say to initialize fruiting conditions as soon as you begin to see little brown pins forming.
I think the turning brown part may be strain dependent. My block started fruiting when it was 100% snow white. And it still has some white on it after 3 or 4 flushes.
Good luck!

Actually a month or two from now is perfect time for inoculating logs. You can purchase spawn from FP or many other places. It takes a bit longer than a kit, but you'll get a higher yield. Here are some directions. They are fairly thorough. I've never weight my logs or anything like that. Its not necessary. It is a bigger production, but I've found it to be more stable - You don't have to worry as much about contamination and its a lot of fun. Stamets book 'Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms' is an invaluable source too. Good Luck!

Hello, I'm new to the whole mushroom growing technique. I've been reading around and I feel like I want to try to grow Shiitake. I'm just wondering can you use PF-Tek's "Let's grow mushrooms" youtube instruction videos to grow Shiitake instead of what he's growing? For Example: 1. Make the substrate (hardwood sawdust, wheat bran, gypsum, sucrose, water) instead of (vermiculite, brown rice powder, water). 2. Put substrate into mason jars 3. Pressure Cook to sterilize 4. Inoculate Shiitake spores into jars along the side with sterilized needle. 5. Put in a dim, roughly room temp setting, and wait. 6. Birth? That's removing them from the jars right? 7. Place into terrarium with holes and perlite in it? 8. Wait and mist every now and then with water?
Would this work? Sorry if it's completely wrong

Although it MAY be possible to do it this way, it definitely will not provide you with the best results. Firstly, I read numerous times that shiitake do not grow well from spores, so you will want to start with mycellium on agar or in a syringe. Next, you will want to start the procedure with grain spawn and then transfer the fully colonized grain spawn to supplemented sawdust. From this point on, it seems that you do something different depending on which strain of shiitake it is.

So instead of buying spores, you can buy already grown mycellium? At which point I inoculate some grain? And then mix it with the shiitake substrate I mentioned before? Would you know a good place to buy the mycellium? Thanks by the way.

Yup, you can buy cultured mycelium. eg. liquid culture syringes, agar plates, culture slants (which you probably don't have to worry about)
Sporeworks sells shiitake cultures.
I'm not sure after full colonization, but there was a thread recently that talked about the procedure of letting it brown, crust, dunk and fruit
^^^ meph beat me too it

Ok, so can I buy something like this? http://sporeworks.com/store/catalog/Three-Pound-Supplemented-Sawdust-Block-w-Rye-Grain-Pocket-Gour-p-16357.html With Shiitake. And once it starts browning, remove it from the bag, and put it into a humidified terrarium?

Working feverishly on your new endeavours eh? I hope that's working out really well...patience must be taxed waiting for the snow to melt and the ground to thaw.
'Round here, were bracing for wickedly bad flooding again. Forecasting losing millions of acres of land and lots of houses going to get kicked. At least we all learned from the 1997 Red Sea experience. Not any more pleasant though...

It looks like John took the files off his server. I have them on my hard drive. I may upload them here and make a sticky. I'll have to check my satellite modem to see how much bandwidth I have left. We live in a rural area and the only internet access is via satellite with VERY restrictive upload and download limits. I'll see what I can do. RR

These links SHOULD take you to the COMPLETE handbooks, IF I did everything correctly. These files are too large to upload to the Shroomery, so I am putting them on Mediafire.
Oyster_Mushroom_Handbook.pdf (29.9 MB)
Shitake_Mushroom_Handbook.pdf (34.8 MB)
edit: files are now hosted at Mediafire
