Just wondering about point 4. Does PeerGuardian really help or does it give a false sense of security? How hard is it for someone interested in catching filesharers to set up a honeypot box on a residential DSL line that won't be on the blacklist until long after the subpoenas are sent out?
Over here filesharing is still mostly legal so I don't really care who sees my IP when torrenting, or bother with PG.

I went to night school off and on for years for computer programming. Of course, to all my not so computer literate friends/family this means I know how to repair their computers. 99% of the time it's bad browsing habits and I just end up formatting and reinstalling windows. If it's a guy's computer I always be sure to mention pornhub.com and generally that saves me from having to do it again in a few months.

Your peerguardian link is pointing to adblock.
Another firefox addon is noscript. It prevents some legit things from working and is not as friendly to the novice, but does well to stop script-based security threats.
You also forgot to remind people to do windows updates. Many times when I fix people's virus-laden computers I find out they're ignoring that yellow shield icon next to the time ("system tray"). M$ makes buggy software. So it is in your best interest to keep installing the patches they release, that fix gaping holes in their OS.
And simply having a hardware firewall (which is an essential part of any router) can prevent many problems. Having your PC hooked straight to the internet is a big risk, especially if you don't install m$ patches for their shitty wares.
Unfortunately most people don't follow these rules and keep Gumby and I in business.
*edit* one other genuinel y useful tool is simply super software's trojan remover. It's a fully functional 30-day trial that mostly does automatically, the shit I used to do manually- searching folders, the registry, etc for common hijacks. It is probably the best shitware-remover I've found, ever, above adaware/spybot. Get it, use it, then uninstall it once you've removed all the bad shit.
I also use a boot-cd called "techie's tooklit" which comes with useful stuff like winternal's erd commander. Although it's possible to create a window pe (preinstall enviro.) cd to do the same, erd makes available a running windows session to access the hard drive contents and registry of a pc. This can help when removing certain issues such as viruses that startup with winlogon (the user select screen) - most times when something hijacks this, it's pretty difficult to remove without something like erd.

Thanks Gumby. I downloaded Peer Guardian. Now is that always running, or do I need to open it up every time I use P2P and/or torrents? Thanks.

Nah, if it's running in the system tray then it's doing its job. It updates itself every time you start the program... which for me would be when I restart.

Hey, one more thing, Gumby. What does Peer Guardian show up as in the Task Manager? I looked to make sure it was running, but I don't see anything in there that looks like it.

far as i known peerguardian is outdated and not supported anymore. The current project is peerblock, this is what you should have installed right now.

Fuck that shit. If I wanna look up something illegal, thats my fucking right you bastards. So yeah, like I said fuck them. After reading reviews I switched to BitDefender. S'aight, runs in the background and shit and I don't even notice it. Another excellent antivirus program is Kapersky. Lastly, if your cheap computer tard ass doesn't know how to "obtain" the high end antivirus software, look into Microsoft Security Essentials, cuz it's free. I put that shit on my netbook. I've been to my fair share of pornsites on that netbook and no viruses yet, so I guess it works.
Dude FUCK Microsoft Security Essentials.
Avast! Free is the way to go. That or AVG Free, or Avira Free All very excellent FREE antivirus programs. Better than fucken Microsoft Security. If you're going to PAY for an AV (or crack)... Kaspersky and NOD32 are the best paid ones IME.

Hey Gumby, what does Peer Guardian show up as in Windows Task Manager? Also, what about makaveli8x8's assertion that Peer Guardian isn't as good as Peer Block? Thanks.

ah, concerning the antivirus thing, my day job methinks might be similar to yours, and in my experience, i see no difference in virus infected computers that come into our shop running AVG free vs. the full goddamn $150 Norton SystemShits, or NOD32, or Kaspersky, or anything. I'm pretty sure to be a legit AV company these days, your virus database is your fucking backbone, followed closely by how well your scanning engine can remove malware, particularly ones that use devilish tricks to make itself damn near impossible to remove by hand.
i've found that a combination of AVG free and Malwarebytes (this ones a keeper, particularly. these guys rule) gets rid of ~90-100% of viruses.
it's really important to remember that there's no antivirus program in the land that can stop you from self infecting your stuff. scan everything you download/plan to use from the internet before you run it, and try to keep your wits about you when dealing with unknown and/or potentially deviant activity (porn sites, cracked programs, etc.)

same thing with me. i went for network administration (cisco).
i can tell you how to properly set up a network with 1000 clients but i dont know shit about pc repair.
i havent used windows at all in 6 or 7 years. eventually i just told them i no longer support windows. ill fix a mac if the get one.
they were pissed for a while but fuck em. now i dont have to deal with the arguments that were guaranteed to come up if i couldnt fix it as fast as geek squad or whatever.
one of the best decisions ive ever made.
