 Cacti Don't go dormant in the winter,well at lest in Florida they don't

How's it going people?Well,after doing extensive research on the dormancy of cacti,I have found on a bunch of cacti sites,and on here that cacti go dormant in the winter,and need no food or water during this time.Well,I have found that this isn't entirely true.I currently have a Mammillaria that is pushing out a bunch of flower buds and flowers.Is it me,or when cacti go dormant that means asleep,and would by know means be active enough to put out flowers.All my Cacti have been outdoors all winter long,uncovered,except for my Loph and have been getting loads of rain.I now really believe Cacti need not go dormant in the winter in a warmer climate like Florida,and keep on growing and flowering like they would in the spring and summer.Anybody have any thoughts on my theory?

Unsure. Mine near the windows seem to have gone dormant, but the ones under my lighting are showing lots of new growth.

Yeah,that's what I'm getting at.If grown in a nice warm environment with lots of sun,or grow lights Cacti will keep growing,and not go dormant.All my outdoor cacti look really good despite all the drenching rain they have been getting,and I suspect more will start to flower in no time as well.

Well,that's the proof.All three of our cacti haven't gone dormant.Yo justme,any of yours flowering?

K, i believe that theres probably a temp regulator in them, since you and i dont normally get below freezing, all their life juice continues to circulate thru them.
maybe a bit slower, but not DORMANT. other places that are COLD during winter, the cacti shut down almost entirely to combat the winter. theres fish in mongolia that freeze in the ice to wait for spring to thaw and re energize.
and with Iqd's plants, he has some under lighting where hes tricking the plant into believing it has all the proper ....."things" to grow/fruit

Exactly,so if the conditions are right,Cacti will never go dormant.The reason why they do in the wild,is because it gets freezing at night in the desert,so the Cacti slow down,during this harsh time,then pick up where they left off in the spring.

yeah, thats any plant tho mang. taking away from nature and producing different growth scenarios, you can make a plant do whatever you feel like making it do

Well,that's true,but I really meant to prove that if cacti are kept out doors in a tropical,or sub tropical climate,they wont go dormant at all.Even though I've read a lot where it says Cacti will go dormant outdoors anywhere in the winter,if that makes sense.

I've gotten that impression from reading around also. It seems to me a cactus, or any plant for that mater, isn't going to have a calendar around. I'm sure "winter" is a soft term which changes for each specie depending on its native season schedule. A winter in New England and a winter in Texas is a lot different.

nope I disagree
I think they spend some time in dormancy regardless of temps.
a lot of mine went dormant in the spring and summer after being under a 1000w hps all winter.
and after fucking up their schedule they didn't grow as much as they should have.

Hmm,maybe it depends on the species,because none of mine have gone dormant at all,and they have been outside the whole winter.

maybe the transition from the 1000w to natural conditions was such a shock it sent them into dormancy

Here in texas, my pedros wont go dormant on their own. I have to purposefully winter my cactii by withholding water.
I only do it because they're susceptible to freezing rains. I lost a very cool stenocereus once after a flash-freezing rain one early texas morning.

Hmmm,no freezing rains here,but we have had a couple of nights that got in the lower 30's,and one night it got 29.Didn't phase my cacti one bit though

Haha, I just got back from Utah where that was day time temps if even  I still found some cacti there too, buried in snow on a gorge face.
