Furcal to Braves

The Braves have offered Furcal a three year contract. Looks like it's going to happen, but it's not been finalized yet. Furcal adds speed and a bit of pop. Thank god Gregor Blanco isn't going to be batting lead off anymore. It would make sense to trade Yunel Escobar to the Padres in a deal involving Jake Peavy, but the Padres GM is apparently a dipshit and couldn't move him. Now he says he's keeping Peavy, even though he doesn't have the money.

I don't see how it makes sense to trade Yunel Escobar now, when Furcal has played in less than 162 games over two seasons. He's an injury nightmare. When he plays, he slays, but you want someone solid ready to fill his flaky shoes.

He was healthy for most of 2007, and played well during the playoffs this year. As long as Kelly Johnson doesn't end up in left field, I'll be happy. The Braves need a power hitting outfielder. I'd like to see Josh Anderson/ Jordan Schafer in center, Francouer in right, and a power hitting left fielder.

Then I guess you don't really want a power hitting left fielder.
I have read an awful lot of this guy sucks and that guy's an asshole and blah fucking blah out of a few people. I don't get it. Did your sisters all get cornholed and dumped by giant ball players or something?

Manny is a great hitter. I'd love to see him on the Braves. I just don't like him. Anyway, the Braves aren't going to get him. He'd be a bad fit in Atlanta and he's probably too expensive.

Manny needs to stay in the NL so I can watch him in the field
And Zap, why don't the Yanks buy him too? This is a serious question, you know he'd kill for at least a little while, and it wouldn't hurt the Yanks if they have to move him after he flames out and they have to eat $.
The Yanks, to me anyway, seem to be the best place for him. After getting their pitching straight, it would seem that Manny would really add fuel to the fire. If I'm a pitcher, I'm more then happy to have his bat.

Why would he be too expensive for the Braves? Did they suddenly lose their TV station? They don't have any small market excuse.

You are quite correct, but I think the Yanks still need pitching and more than one OF. They need to be more judicious and spread the money around. I think they're definitely waiting to take the market temperature on Abreu. Abreu + Sheets > Manny. And that's probably a pretty even money equation.

Assume they got a number one starter, would they still have enough money left over for Manny?

I can't believe what people are willing to give Texiera.
He's good, but THAT good?
I don't think so.

I'm kind guessing Sheets and Abreu at around 12-13 each, so yeah, if they get Sheets they could still get Manny (and I think have a lower payroll than last year) but they need a RF far more than an LF.

And don't forget speedy center fielder Mike Cameron.
Surely a necessary ingredient for success.

I couldn't agree more. I mean, I dug him down in Texas, and he seems like a great player and team mate but he's not Willie Mays.
Which brings this to me, IF a guy just showed up (pretend with me here) and could play like Willie, what would he get on an open bidding market?
25, 27 Million??

I think that Alex Rodriguez gets 28 million a year so I guess it would be pretty close to that.

I'd rather the players have the money than the owners.

Amen. I never once put a game on or went to one with the happy anticipation that I would be able to watch an owner do anything. I'd pay to watch Jerry Jones' head explode but that would just be a one time PPV thing.

Back to the original topic. It appears that the Furcal to the Braves deal is not quite etched in stone: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3774929&name=olney_buster

Looks like the deal is off. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081217&content_id=3720143&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp They needed to address the outfield and find a number one before anything else anyway.
