So I was partly wrong.. they can predict it.  The error bars are a thousand years though!    Nevertheless, 2012 does not fall in that interval.

I was surprised to see that they could make any prediction at all... but its very rough because they are projecting using the current rate of decay only.  The true mechanism behind the magnetic shift is unknown, so no good predictions can be made.  I like how Madtowntripper put it in a different thread...

The next polar shift will not happen in 2012 and has already been predicted. I forget when it's supposed to be, but not within our life times. We rely heavily on the earth's magnetism, but it's not stopping anytime soon. And if it does flip flop, nothing bad is supposed to real;y happen. Damn, I wish I had my sources
