What is your opinion on the effects of meditation on day to day concentration? I have heard it is effective but just how affective do you see it to be? Though i know this is hard to quantify, in the direction of overwhelming benefits or slight? A large source of stress in my life comes from ADHD so i'm intrested.
Meditation is the self regulation of attention, in the service of self-inquiry, in the here and now.
In other words, the opposite of meditating is having ADHD. Not being able to control your attention.

I believe that this is the best comeback to this entire thread. because everyone always tries to look for something greater than what is really the most important, and that is self control. whose to say that being able to control yourself isnt a great feat? think of all the people that are dependant on drugs.. the physical dependancies can be overcome, however you first must master your mind. if by meditating you can control your thoughts and decisions, then can you not defeat addiction through meditation? what about any problem? of course sitting around doing nothing wont fix your problems, but sitting and pondering on which action is the correct, is this not ultimately the stem to solving your problems? so with that can we not say that meditation does in fact solve all your problems (indirectly) ?
just thought id throw that in there

The whole trump card to this thread is that it is telling people what they can't do, and won't achieve by doing what they like to do. It has no purpose but to deride and ridicule.

People who meditate can easily quit unhealthy habits such as smoking, drugs or drinking.
Like Alan Watts was easily able to do.
-------------------- "People convince themselves of their own lies, becoming victims of their own inventions as they begin to direct their lives by standards of behavior, ideas, feelings, or instincts which do not correspond to their inner reality. What is truly serious in this matter is that the individual loses all points of reference regarding what comprises truth, and what comprises lies. He becomes used to considering as true only that which is convenient for his personal interests; everything that is in opposition to his self-esteem or in conflict with already established prejudices, he considers false."
