Yeah it's a great city, and excellent nightclubs as you said. I've been here for 5 years... it's also a very good place for research, plenty of jobs for scientists.

I'm working, I'm a neuroscientist. And a regular at Family on fridays (trance night) 
I'm 24, and living with my girlfriend of 3 years, just completing her honours degree in European history. We hope to move to Europe together next year, where I'll do my PhD.

I'm from Byron originally, I went to school there before moving north for uni, and I still have family and friends there so I visit Byron quite often. It's only 2 hours away by car. So I kinda have two homes. It's nice.

I'm researching the relationship between stem cells in the brain (yes they are there, but not many) and depression, mostly by studying the role of one particular gene (that my boss discovered).
Yeah, Australia is pretty awesome, I'm sure I'll miss it heaps when I'm in Europe. But the scholarship offered by the German government for foreigners to do a PhD is too good an opportunity to pass up.

Well, it's a 9-5 job. But yeah, I spend most of that time in the lab, or in the animal house putting my mice through mazes etc

Poor mice, I'll never be able to agree to using animals for experiments. But it's something so firmly entrenched in science I might as well try to get over it...but I won't.
What are you going to do your PhD on?

The mice are treated pretty well, and they get on well with me (I've been doing behavioural tests on them for a couple months now). But now I have to study their brains under a microscope so next week they'll be going to mouse heaven 
I won't necessarily do my PhD on neuroscience stuff. It depends on what sort of projects are available - I'm looking at some plant & fungi research labs in Germany, it'd be cool to study mushrooms! Though I doubt there's any projects on the psychedelic species, hehe.

As I said, poor mice.
Studying fungi would be great. Psychoactive species wouldn't be necessary, just a bonus. But fungi are pretty incredible regardless. Very much microbiology based though, something I'm not overly keen on myself, but obviously you don't mind it.
Can you speak German?
