subliminal messages on TV

I don't know about you... but I'm getting damn sick of noticing TV programs and commercials trying to get me to do something (buy a product, vote for a candidate, or just generally feel this way or that way about a certain topic) by using underhanded subliminal messaging techniques. The list of products and companies I will never use grows almost every time I turn on the tube, because I simply will not react kindly to being treated this way. If they want me to do something, they should present it in a liminal way.

I wish commercials were more scientifically informative. Don't just say your product is better. Tell me why and how it is better.

Oh the McDonald's commercial they show all the time on Nickelodeon pisses me off. Telling my kids that happy meals are the "Ultimate Source of Happiness" how ridiculous!!
What I really want to know is, do commercials really have to try and "fool" us into buying their shit? I don't know about subliminal messages, but even the straight messages in commercials treat us as if we are so dumb, we will buy something for the ridiculous reasons they provide us.
The saddest part is that it works. So many people go out and buy stuff they don't even want because of sleazy ad tactics.

I prefer the internets.

I still watch TV because there are a few programs I find worth tuning in for... nature shows mostly. I am a NG addict. And as Bob Dylan sung, "I've been wading through the high muddy waters, with the heat risin' in my eyes." In other words, here I am with all these companies trying to subordinate me, but I know they'll fail so I just continue on. Shrooming has given me knowledge, wisdom, and perspective - so that now when my subconscious is attacked or appealed to, it alerts my conscious mind. Hooray for shrooms!

I haven't watched tv in a long time, but I still watch allot of movies (hooray for netflix), I'm sure that isn't any better though. At least when I rent or download a tv show I don't have to deal with all of the commercials.

Its getting to the point where I can't even watch TV or listen to the radio anymore because the ads bother me so much. Now I just record shows on my cable box and fast forward through the commercials. In movies, its bad too. I hate product placement, although it gets pretty funny noticing how they slip things in, labels facing perfectly towards the viewer... I had a teacher from Sweden and she said that until the 90s or something they didn't have commercials. She was saying her relatives used to come here to visit and laugh their asses off at American commercials.

I actually can't really watch TV anymore because I get too angry. Especially MTV... good lord that channel is single-handedly destroying the minds of the American populace. What's funny is I've been boycotting MTV since I was fifteen because I always felt it was insulting my intelligence and not catering to any kind of reality giving people my age a false image of what life is and should be. However, my mom a 50 something year old woman is absolutely addicted to MTV. I seriously think there's some crazy mind control associated with certain channels.
Anyway I got off point, I'm sorry but I no longer watch TV except for hockey games and watching Turner Classic Movies occasionally. TV is just the shits and the internet is so much better because I can control the content and not have to deal with bullshit commercials.
I am a history freak, I get off on history shows but I haven't watched the History Channel or any of it's relative networks because literally every show is about the United States and how awesome it is and how awesome our military is and how we fucked Saddam up. I literally just sit in my apartment most of the time wondering how fucked the world is to be buying all of this bullshit.

exactly. im so fucking sick of commercials and just media in general. and i have been for a while. i hardly watch tv and listen to the radio, and havent for years. commercials are not only ridiculously cheesy and/or stupid, but as hitler said, noone offers anything to justify claims, just the other day i heard a commercial on the radio for burger king breakfast something or another and at the end it said "bugerking......... the breakfast of tomorrow". COME THE FUCK ON!.
there is one company that i like as far as commercials goes and thats metroPCS. i used them for about 6 months and the service was sub par, but ill be damned if their commercials dont make me laugh good and hard every time.

i don't even care that they use subliminal messages to try and get me to buy things.
i hate how they try and fucking subconsciously program associations into me.
an example would be someone recently mentioned getting into an arguement with their wife over leaving the toilet seat up. that is the most bullshit non-issue i've ever heard of, and i'm sure the wife would have never thought in a million years to mention it if it wasn't for tv.
maybe a bad example, but hopefully you'll see what i'm saying.
every situation on TV has to be understandable by the lowest common denominator, so the associations between things are really dumbed down and stereotypical, but then they don't realize kids do alot of their learning about reality from the television, and they just soak that shit up like a sponge.
honestly it makes me sick.

You don't have to watch tv, if you don't like it don't watch. Or turn it off when a commercial comes on...they aren't forcing you to watch their 'subliminal messages'
-------------------- "If we could sniff or swallow something that would, for five or six hours each day, abolish our solitude as individuals, atone us with our fellows in a glowing exaltation of affection and make life in all its aspects seem not only worth living, but divinely beautiful and significant, and if this heavenly, world-transfiguring drug were of such a kind that we could wake up next morning with a clear head and an undamaged constitution - then, it seems to me, all our problems (and not merely the one small problem of discovering a novel pleasure) would be wholly solved and earth would become paradise." - Aldous Huxley

thats why most people who dont like being brain washed choose to read. TV can become a filter through whcih they see the the world for many people. it serves the purpose of extracting our money and homogenizing our cultural identity and opinions. it's also a passive form of media consumption where your brain is pretty inactive and receptive to suggestion.
of course it's crap. its a goddamn tv. it's sad how its become such an integral part of so many peoples lives. so much so, that buying a plasma tv or some 80 inch monstrosity isnt even seen as fucking crazy anymore.
once you turn it off you'l notice a detox effect withdrawel feeling for a few weeks. then you become infinitely more aware of things around - photo periods, sunsets, the air outside, the eco system on your porch. a little later after being "out of the tv loop" youl notice in conversations of others how much of what they discuss is tv related.
I've also noticed that people who spend alot of time watching TV are people who claim they "didnt have time." or "dont have the time for this and that" they honestly believe it too.
i lent someone a pc and some spare supplies so he could grow his own. i come back three days later (i cooked the grain for him btw!) and the grain was sitting in a pot on his coffee table rotting and i asked him why he hadnt gotten his shit together and he claims he hasnt had time. this motherfucker has no car and no job. what the hell do you think he was doing?

I love T.V. I'm not really worried about being brainwashed because I'm not an idiot.
edit: not saying you guys who don't watch t.v. are idiots just saying that if you know they are trying at any means to get you to buy they're product, then you don't have to become a "consumer zombie."

They stopped doing the yearly TV Smash at Cafe Mojo in Austin a couple years ago when they got new management. When I visited five years ago there was a big pile of TV's out back, just waiting for the day.
I don't see the TV-B-Gone mentioned in this thread yet. Its a little device that looks like a car clicker that sends the power button code for 903 different TV's. It turns off just about any TV except for NEC.
Two days ago I was on the way to one of Shulgin's friday night dinners (got there late and missed him by a few minutes) and my girlfriend saw a tour bus that had a TV in every window. She had me drive up next to it and she turned off a TV that was on the bus.
I installed a jack in mine that connects to where the second visible LED was, allowing me to plug in an external LED array. I got an IR illumintor with 45 IR LED's (so your security camera works at night) and hooked them up with a transistor and made a really powerful tvbgone. It worked great at the sports bar during the superbowl.
Next version will be a hat with IR LED's all around it so it turns off all the TV's at once.
The guy who invented the tvbgone is really cool, I see him at bay area parties sometimes.

Subliminal messages are anything that was purposely put in the show/ad/whatever that goes unnoticed except by people's subconscious. As soon as you notice the message, it's liminal. With that in mind, here are a few examples of shit I've been noticing, evidence of a widespread campaign IMO.
1. The number 6 is hidden into people's faces and other subject matter. This has subliminal effects on many people and, I'm sure, is effective despite its underhandedness and apparent meaninglessness. To begin to understand this concept, think of the word "Six" and contemplate the meaning of the letters. This word, disguised as a harmless numeral, is used to subvert the minds of semi-conscious humans.
2. Images are hidden in other images by displacing pixels or similar modifications. I suspect that many times, when an ad wants me to believe something is bad, they will hide an image of someone being stabbed to death or something equally gruesome... and similarly when they want me to have a good association with something, they will tack on all sorts of unrelated subjects that people generally have warm feelings about.
This is the kind of thing I'm talking about - hidden messages that almost no one notices, yet that have their effects on the effectiveness of the ad. What I'm worried about is this orchestrated campaign I'm seeing - I don't know what its ends are. It seems to have almost biblical proportions.
Your thoughts?

Its not just the TV...subliminal messaging is in everything you consume from the music you listen to to the food you eat, colors, sounds, words and phrases even the tone of things said that you believe in send subliminal messages to your subconsious and make you do certain things and follow certain paths...TV is just another device to get it out there for you to follow.
I guess to get away from it youll have to drop out of society and tune into nature and not watch TV or listen to music or go into the stores...

They all look around at each other and laugh. Then one asks me. Hey wait, isnt he dead? Well yeah he is I said. Then I drive like Junior I mumble, while I promptly slow down.
"Everyday is opposite day. Everything I say is opposite of what you think I am saying. So if I say something and you think I mean one thing it is the opposite of what I am really trying to say. I actually mean another thing other than what you are thinking I am saying. Get it? Good because that's what I meant".
