I hate to do it, but could you provide sources for this as well?
I've heard veiled allusions, but nothing, as some in the media have claimed, that he disfavors the practice, or would even cease, the raids on dispensaries.

Johnm, you should know that I'm not apt to making claims without sources.

I'm mindful of the legitimate interests of states to prevent a slide from palliative treatments into euthanasia. On the other hand, I think that the people of Oregon did a service for the country in recognizing that as the population gets older we've got to think about issues of end-of-life care. ...
As for medical marijuana ... I'm not familiar with all the details of the initiative that was passed, but I think the basic concept of using medical marijuana for the same purposes and with the same controls as other drugs prescribed by doctors, I think that's entirely appropriate. ...
I'm not going to be using Justice Department resources to try to circumvent state laws on this issue.

And you will vote accordingly, as will I. These are issues that matter to me, and you believe they will affect you in different ways than I believe it will affect me. Certain aspects matter to you, certain aspects matter to me.
This is not an issue where either of us, in our opinion, can claim to have the "right, 100% correct answer" because it is a matter of opinion, not a matter of science.
However, I believe most Americans agree with me:
Quote:
A 68% to 16% majority of the public disagrees with the statement that "it is good for the U.S. economy when American companies use less expensive workers in countries like China and India to do work previously done at a higher cost in this country." Majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents all agree on this. However, many more Republicans (25%) than Democrats (8%) support the minority view that this is good for the U.S. economy.

well the comment about not letting the justice department interfere with state laws is the strongest I've heard yet, but I wonder if he means it
Both dem candidates have been branded by the media as ceasing the raids, but this seems irresponsible journalism to me, as most of their quotes say they wouldn't prosecute patients. So what? Is bush prosecuting patients growing or consuming for personal use? Did Clinton?
On both cases I'm not aware of it happeningl. I'm not saying it isn't, but it's kind of a red herring. The justice dept. is allready ignoring these folks w/ re: to prosecutions by and large. The issue is, will they stop raiding the individuals (which I believe they've kinda said so in some quotes, not sure) and will they stop raiding and prosecuting cases against the dispensiries?
It pisses me off when I here the media distort this issue. By threatining, raiding, and prosecuting cases against the providers, they do a great deal to limit the availability. This is the real issue. I here so much bullshit about "omg they're putting sick people in jail" when I've not seen or heard anything about this w/ re: personal use, production.
I can't help but think its a clever cop out, just like the decriminilization quotes, w/ spokesman saying "you're too stupid to understand what decriminilization is" that would allow them to continue the Clinton-style raids.

John, I will say this, I really do believe Barack Obama when he says that he will not use justice department resources to circumvent state laws. This includes using justice department resources to conduct raids on state-legislated marijuana clinics.
If I am wrong in my belief, I guess I will find out, but his stance is strong and he has voted on these issues before. He voted against the coburn amendment, for instance.

I'm sure you're also for the federal government subsidizing the poor and lower middle class who will be unable to live once there is an increase in prices, right? My what a vicious cycle....

Do you have a source that shows Obama has already won? Perhaps a graph? (meant as playful, not mean)
> Is bush prosecuting patients growing or consuming for personal use? Did Clinton?
The justice department is currently doing everything in its power to trump the states rights with respect to medicinal cannabis. As far as Bill Clinton goes, in 1999 there were 704,812 people in the United States arrested for cannabis related crimes, an increase of over 85% from the 380,399 arrested in 1993 when he first took office.

FireworksGod, I believe strongly that we can stay economically stable without exporting jobs to countries with pisspoor human rights and labor rights. I will not stand for jobs that Americans could be doing being sent abroad to kids who will get paid 50 cents an hour. If it results in prices being driven up, so be it, we need to work harder to offset that in that case by expanding the technology sector, creating new jobs at home, and ending the war in Iraq, a HUGE drain to our economy. With my vote, I refuse to compromise on this issue. I refuse to condone outsourcing to countries without environmental protections or labor rights.

My point is that the increase in prices hurts those unable to offset that increase. Refusing to create jobs for the poor in other nations, if doing so raises the prices in the States, hurts the poor there too.

Yes, I know it hurts poor people, fireworks. I was a poor person myself, I grew up homeless. I'm well aware that these poor people in other nations wont find jobs. However, if they cleaned up their human rights records, their environmental policies, and gave workers rights, maybe I wouldn't be so against it. As it stands, though, sending jobs into these countries to take advantage of horrific human rights abuses simply will not fly with me, not until these countries improve their records. In which case, it will be their own corrupt government's fault for not adopting working standards and environmental standards.

Without going too far off topic, how to you feel about Koyoto that exempts "3rd world countries" (such as India and China) from pollution controls? In the long run, this policy (of exemption) encourages manufacturers to outsource production to the exempt countries which actually increases pollution (due to transportation on top of no pollution controls).

Seuss, I am against exemptions like that, but I can understand them. Hopefully in the next 10 years or so, the world can get together to help countries like this out into converting their power resources to be more environmentally friendly and less polluting. It will take a lot of jobs and a lot of engineers to undertake this task. As you probably know, though, these countries are abusing the fuck out of their exempt status. I don't think China should be exempt anymore, it is developing very fast and probably should join the rest of the non-exempt countries.
Transportation is not the primary problem and is not the primary polluter, power plants are. I know this is not a popular stance among us liberals, but I am for the full transition to nuclear power augmented by solar and wind. I believe recently it was discovered that wind power could be produced cheaper than even nuclear power and still be as effective.
Nuclear power waste is a pollutant, but it is in a very concentrated form. In fact, if only CO2 worked that way, fossil fuel plants wouldnt be so bad. We could just bury the CO2 in a condensed form. Nuclear power waste will not be diffuse around the world, and wont cause systemic global effects.

Update:
Apparently, Obama has taken his largest lead yet vs. Clinton and his numbers are still ahead of McCain:
Quote:
The current 11 percentage point lead is the largest for Obama this year, and marks the ninth consecutive day in which Obama has led Clinton by a statistically significant margin. The current Gallup Poll Daily tracking average is based on interviewing conducted Saturday, Sunday and Monday -- after the initial reports of Obama's controversial remarks about "bitter" small-town residents began to be reported in the news media.
The two candidates will hold a nationally televised debate in Philadelphia on Wednesday night, and it is possible that this confrontation -- plus any delayed impact of Obama's controversial remarks -- may affect Democratic voters' perceptions in the days to come. (To view the complete trend since Jan. 3, 2008, click here.)
