Nope, it's not my cat, it's THE cat.
Just like the entire human species has been traced back to a single African woman and several of her lovers who lived in East Africa tens of thousands of years ago, the same has been done for cats.
It turns out that all domestic cats are the descendants of just five female African Wildcats (Felis silvestris lybica) and a number of males who got them kittens, approximately 10.000 years ago.
So, all cats we know and love are descendants of this species of kitty. If you look at its fur, you see black, brown, red, gray, white.. it's all there!
Since it's but five females all our domestic cats came from, it would probably be good for domestic cat genetics to catch a couple of wild specimens, and breed them with the major types of domestic cats to introduce fresh genes to the pool.
So, this is what cats look like without the selective breeding we humans like to do with animals and plants alike.
