you should have just paid something on it before it got sent to a collection agency. Hospitals cannot send your bill to collections if you pay ANY amount on them. I learned this from my father in law, when I had massive medical bills from having back surgery, and many of them. I sent in 1 dollar to each a month for a few years until I could afford to pay them off, they never went into collections, sure the hospital called asking for larger payments, I told them it was all I have and there is nothing they can do about it.
Now that it is in a collection agency though, it can show up in your credit report. What I would do is tell the collection agency to provide documentation proving that the debt is valid. If they do not then they must forgive the debt and remove any marks from your credit. If they harass you, ask for the address and phone number of their corporate offices as they will be hearing from your lawyer, they will leave you alone.

that can fuck you, I keep getting a notice from some book club, someone used my name, got the 30 free books and didnt fulfill the contract, they started sending notices, I keep asking for validation of debt, if they dont respond or send something with my signature they they're shit out of luck
starting to pay can reset the statute of limitations or have you acquire a false debt like the one I mentioned

i never said i was a genius. but what about interest rates etc? the money you borrow doesnt come with out some extra added to the bill, as far as im aware of. if im wrong, please enlighten me. obviously i dont know what im talking about. (and im not being sarcastic)
all i know is it will be a lot harder on me in the short term trying to pay these debts to get my credit fixed, then it would be to live with fucked up credit. and the short term is all i really care about anyway. so it works out for me.

Well, I don't really know shit about credit but I agree with Wrestler. Why would I want to take out a loan in a shaky economy with an even shakier currency? Seems to me I should just aim to earn what I want rather then be beholden to a bank for my domicile.

Dude I wasn't being sarcastic, it makes so much more sense to buy what one can afford to buy with cash he currently has instead of buying more expensive stuff with credit and paying 1.5 times to 4.0 times retail (guess, I have no idea what current APR is, plus most people pay off interest and keep paying off purchases forever) for the latest douche gadget or car or whatever.
in that case, please feel free to ignore levels of sarcasm in my previous post. i just recently started smoking pot again after a multiple month break, and smoked a bowl of some unnamed variety of potent pot... perhaps i read more into what you were saying than you actually were.
but ya, fuck credit.

yeah someone else mentioned it, but if you decide not to pay, don't ever pay it back.
you already got a mark on your credit for not paying, you'll get another mark when you start paying again. so if its been a couple years, and you go to pay it back, you'll get a "late payment" or something like that on your "current" credit report, which is bad.

You dont understand how credit works if you think it's a stupid system. The system itself is not stupid, the people that use it are. Dont pin personal responsibility on credit companies. People should be accountable for their own mistakes. You do not have to get credit if you do not want it. So, if someone is in debt because of optional credit they got, I do not feel bad.

I buy stuff with credit cards, but I ALWAYS have the cash to back it up. This is the smart thing to do.

In canada, most people don't know you actually have the power to not pay collections. You have to be ready to back it up and know some law, but that's about it.
I know that our laws are vastly different from america's though.
But here, a collection agency is a 3rd party. I have signed no contract with them. For example, I signed into a lenghty cellphone contract and have gotten behind now.
So a third party, a collection agency, actually bought my debt, but now is trying to collect it from me.
They did not have a representative with their own contract when I bought and signed for the cellphone, therfor they are a third party.
It is actually illegal for them to harass you if you ask them not to anymore.
When they call you, pick up and ask to speak to a supervisor or whatnot. When he/she gets on the phone, ask them if they are a third party and if you have a legally binding contract with them. They will definetely try to talk around this, but keep hammering that question out. Eventually if your stubborn enough, they'll answer that yes they are a third party and no you DON'T have a legally binding contract.
Then tell them that you want them to immediately stop calling and harassing you.
