oh shit Gr8fulJ, i thought you did, but youre on maui...
whats the big fuss about everything being so expensive. not only would it be worth it if it really were expensive bcuz the raw beauty, but where else do you find oppurtunities to live on a tropical island and intern as a farmer and pay next to nothing for rent....?
not to mention the snorkeling, fishing, hunting, hiking, surfing, etc. etc. etc.

I spent the first year of college in Hawaii. Don't trust native dealers, they'll do thier best to get you on meth. Only associate with black and white dudes for drug business, and apart from the meth stuff theres a lot of gangs (especially beware of the samoans) and its really just not good to get mixed up with. Cannabis and MDMA are unlimited out there, youll literally pretty much find it at every corner. STICK TO OAHU IF YOU ARE OF WHITE OR AFRICAN DESCENT! I cannot stress that enough. If you're looking to see the world through rosa parks' eyes then by all means live on lanai or maui but if you want even a hint being comfortable out there, stick to oahu. Not sure how the locals of the big island are but its REALLY rural out there, so it's pretty damn boring

rural is me tho. i want a 100' garden. and 18 greenhouses ya know. im kinda anti city, the whole concrete jungle isnt my thing. born on a farm gonna die on a farm.
but Oahu is starting to call more than Hilo, so since im flying into Oahu ill check out the digs around there first and foremost, and then Hilo/Kona. i heard the big island is pretty chill towards us haole's tho.
EVERYONE, thanks for all the info and good vibes. without the support and encouragment from all of you, this move would seem overwhelming! mahalo

Unfortunately, some people are really untolerant of Haole's, but most people it's just about how you treat them... If you are open and friendly to them first, they'll be the same to you. I'm haole and I've gotten lots of stinkeye, but most locals aren't so bad once you talk to them.

I seriously can't be the only person on here with an extreme love of literature? My tag was more a reference to Phillip K. Dick's novel, not a goofy animated Robert Downey Jr. That being said, I was VERY impressed by the movie adaptation. Extremely faithful to the book. However, they really did overplay the monitoring/police state aspects. The scene where a woman is sitting in a huge room full of monitoring stations while tracing Bob Arctor's call is completely made up. The book focused more on the effects of long-term drug use on people and later the whole rehab/distributor conspiracy.

Yeah it was written in the 50's and it's still the most controversial science fiction book today. Lot's of anti-democracy rhetoric and militarism, things that are a no-no in a genre infested with cyberpunk anarchy.
