The best part of moving to Hawaii... is waiting to get there.
Daydreaming about paradise is a wonderful thing.
Life on Hawaii does not entirely suck... but it is still life... it isn't THAT different from life anywhere else.
You'll enjoy the temps here... not as hot in the Summer... nor as cold in the Winter when compared to Florida.
Yeah, 150 inches of rain isn't THAT much... and most of it comes at night. The further from the mountains you are... the less rain you'll get. Really, 2 blocks from my house gets 20 fewer inches of rain per year than I do... and by the time I get to the beach, there are cacti.
You like it tropical? Live on a hill...
You like it dry? Live by the beach.
Simple.

Hells yeah J! Let's gather!
The Big Island (Also known as Hawaii) is the island with the most cows and horses. The population is smaller than Maui but larger than Kauai... still it is the BIG island. There are fewer people there per square mile than on Kauai. If the other islands are too small or too crowded... try the Big Island. Good snorkeling... but the beaches are better and OLDER (beaches take time to form)on other islands.
Oahu IS the gathering place... the most people (including me) live there. Honolulu is on Oahu. Oahu has GREAT surf... and decent snorkeling.
Maui is a chill place... more people than on the Big Island or Kauai... but fewer than Oahu. Maui is a good island... unless you surf. There are better islands for surfing. GREAT snorkeling.
Kauai is the garden isle. BEAUTIFUL... but very few people live there... this makes it hard to find a job to support yourself and pay rent. Kauai is the best island... but it does help to be independently wealthy. Surf in Kauai gives Oahu a run for its money... hikes are better on Kauai.
The other islands are small with small populations... but Molokai and Lanai do have places to live and work. Of the two, Molokai is prettier.

Man... I miss Hawaii.. That was the only place my whiter than white--Scotch-Irish ass ever tanned! Pearl Harbor is a must visit, and I remember going to this mall that had a big open space in the center so In the middle of window shopping I just stopped to soak in the warm rain...I also remember camping on this beach and a lifeguard came to warn my friends and I that there was a huge jellyfish problem (then)
Such good memories, I'm jealous!

I don't know that tropical wandering would mix well with a heavy trip, for me that is. The trees would turn into beasts of all sorts, and the unfamiliarity would seep bad vibes. I always like to be as close to wilderness as suburbia allowed. I guess that's why I moved to Seattle, I like my comfort zones...

I haven't read the entire thread, but one thing to be careful of is banking. When I moved from the US to the Caribbean, I opened a new bank account when I got here and wrote a check from my state side account to transfer funds. What I didn't realize is that it would take two weeks for the transfer to go through. By the time I realized my mistake, the funds had been removed from my old account, but had not been released into my new account. I was stuck living on credit cards for two weeks.

I lived on the Big Island for a few months last year, it's an amazing place and I wish I could return permanently. I haven't been on the other islands enough to say for sure but I'd guess that it would be easiest to get started on either the Big Island, Maui, or Oahu.. personally, though, I wouldn't want to live on the latter two. I couldn't imagine living in Hawaii and not being close to Kilauea.
If you go to Big Island, check out Hilo and the Puna district. It's a very cool place with a huge variety of people, most of which are incredibly open minded and there is an awesome counterculture there. Tons of farming and sustainable living situations. It's easy to get around if you're good at hitchhiking. People are full of aloha.
Plus, Puna is just a beautiful place in general. Lush jungle with tons of fruit trees and flowers with a gorgeous black rocky coast line and several black sand beaches..
Tourists are all about Kona, and it's an awesome place too, but it's also the most expensive side of the island and the most commercially developed (not to mention in the shadow of an ever-ominous Mauna Loa). I really dig Waimea too.

yeah Hilo/Puna district is where we're planning, but im starting to get good vibes for Oahu. but something about all the farming and sustainable living in Hilo/Puna/Volcano area is just what i need/am.
i love green, and i love rain. thats what attracted me to that part of hawaii first. and the lower priced housing is nice.
Suess, thats what i was worried about. how do you suggest i do it. i already called my bank here in the mainland and told them im going to keep my address the same and just take my checks and debit card over there with me. if anything ill just use ATMs and pay cash. but i want to get an account set up there ASAP. whats a good hawaiian bank?
Seattle, its cuz youre sexy
all the shroomy's live on oahu.....
