dishwasher pasteurization
    #8048003 - 02/20/08 06:07 PM (5 years, 2 months ago)

Tripped me out that it actually worked, but then again why wouldn't it have? We bought a new dishwasher a couple months ago, a Kenmore. It has this option button on it that says "sanitize", I guess it raises the water temp to "sanitize" the dishes. The idea smacked me in the head like scorned bitch. See if it can pasteurize my composted Hpoo. I put several pounds of compost in an oven bag, knotted it off, placed that inside another oven bag, knotted it off. Put it in the dishwasher on the top rack, ran it through a cycle with the sanitize and drying options on, let it cool overnight. Poured the compost into a tub, noc'd it up with a couple crumbled PF cakes(all I had available). A week has gone by, the myc' is colonizing the compost just fine, and not a single contam'. I have no idea what temps. are reached inside the dishwasher or for how long those temps. are maintained, but I don't really care, it worked. And it sure is a hell of alot easier than the traditional stove top pasteurization. I have no idea if it will work in just any dishwasher or not, but if you have a newer model and has an option that raises the water temp. give it a try.--- I imagine it would be a holy mess if the bag were to break open.

Yeah I think dishwashers reach upto 65 and higher. I read an idea on here about using a washing machine inside a pillow case at 70. I belive that would work too but leave loads of straw juice in your washing machine maybe.

think about your question. do you honestly think that something can be pasteurized at 65 degrees Fahrenheit?

He has to be talkin' Celsius. He's probably from them UK. I'll tell 'ya though, when the dishwasher is in "sanitize" mode clouds of steam come outta' the thing. It's nice right now, brings the humidity up in the house, feels good. I don't think I'll be messing with it come summer.

sorry, not used to C. but honestly i dont know that a dishwasher can pastureize, thats why im asking. he did this as an experiment, and has only said so far its worked. he also said he was unaware of the temp it reached or if it really even did the trick, just that its workin so far. so i was more so making sure it really reaches roughly 150F....

Think man,
I'm pretty sure it's gotta be 65C. 65F is hardly heated.

This is an interesting idea and I hope someone can develop it further. I lack a dishwasher (fuck automation of life) but I know this is going to be handy in the future.

Hears the deal---I put composted Hpoo (that had cotton mold growing across the top, in the compost barrel), double bagged it, ran it through the "sanitize" cycle, 'noc'd it up with colonized grain, and it's growing fine(for a week now). No signs of contams, not even the cotton mold that is in the compost barrel. This may not work with every dishwasher, but if you have a newer model, give it a try, it's working for me, it may work for you. I'm only using it for my composted Hpoo, nothing else. It's quick, easy, and I'm lazy.

how does 65 C sterilize the jars though? im confused here... don't you need at least 100 C ?

In the time a dishwasher runs, I doubt seriously that it will heat the substrate enough to pasteurize it. If you could maintain the 65C temperature at the center of the substrate for an hour, it would be pasteurized, but if the dishwasher is only reaching 65C, it would take a few hours. However, many growers have successfully colonized unpasteurized manure.

I'd suggest following standard pasteurizing teks for the casing layer, if used. They're far less forgiving than substrates, which fully colonize.

I'm doing it again tonight, I have some grain jars ready. I'm not saying this will work with every dishwasher, but it worked with mine. And I understand the thing about internal temp. I laid it out on the rack so it was long and thin, not one big balled up mass.

that's kind of how the mush cult crowd is. there's lots already written about most aspects of mushroom growing, so they're real big on the search function. if you ask a question, probably your first response will say something like "utfsf" or something along those lines. if you ask a question not well thought out, you're gonna get called on it.

Wonder if you could use a dishwasher to sterilize jars/bags too instead of having to go out and buy a PC?

No, I'm using the dishwasher to pasteurize compost. Sterilization takes higher temps and much more time.
