Initially i got into sound tribe by listening to some live recordings and studio work i got off soulseek. I was definately drawn to them once I finally gave them a shot.. the fusion of drum n' bass, dub, jazz, rock, etc, that they pull off is really one of a kind, imo. There are a few other acts out there, i guess, but I think STS9 does it best.
Having grown up listening to stuff like pink floyd, zeppelin, the clash, and loads of other classic rock, psychadelic rock, ska, alternative rock, and old punk rock, I have a definate love for the live act. A dj or producer just can't really measure up to someone playing an old-school instrument like the guitar, bass, piano or drums.
The fact that all the members of STS9 have pretty well mastered both a "live" instrument, as well as computer software and digital or analog hardware, is really impressive. It's really hard to grasp just how much goes on during some of their songs until you see them live.
I'm not going to try and describe their show.. google and youtube can provide plenty of eye candy..
The point of the post is, I can't think of any band that i've heard of in the past few years.. except maybe The Flaming Lips.. that are really doing some forward-thinking music, and a really amazing live show. STS9's show incorporates some really fresh music, really talented musicians, and a great light/visual show.
It's going to be really hard for any kind of music to come out now and make an impact like Pink Floyd, or the Dead, or Zeppelin, or the Stones, or any other famous live act. But, I think STS9 deserves a definate nod in the realm of Floyd... psychadelic rock, really, done extremely well and using todays technology as best possible.

I remember hearing people talk about them on the boards here a lot, then I saw they were playing Lollapalooza last summer, which I was going to be attending, so I decided to check them out to familiarize myself. I'm fucking glad I did. They're live show is awesome. One of the best live acts I've ever seen (up there with Daft Punk's pyramid, Joshua Redman, the Marsalis Family, and Tool.) I didn't get a taste of a complete live show until this past fall in Columbus, and it was absolutely incredible. I hope to see them many more times.
I could sit there and watch their drummer play for hours. He's pretty much all I focus on when I've seen them.

at first, i just watched the two drummers.. but, in Las Vegas i was stuck watching the guitarist all night.. not in a bad way, but man, he can seriously play the guitar and ableton, or whatever he's playing off of when he's hammering that midi-keyboard.
They're all really talented. See you at langerado, right? gonna be a killer show, i know it already.

that stuff's for cutters.
seriously, though.. I don't see them as fresh. Unique, maybe... they definately have their own sound. But, how many depressing ass songs can you really make?
maybe i need a refresher course or something.. I just can't remember a song of theirs that didn't drone on and leaving you feeling slightly sadder than when it started.

you know i would be in total agreement with ya Yos, i grew up listening to and going to rock and punk, hardcore shows..
hell ive even seen pink floyd after "momentery lapse of reason"
and yea on the fresh tip i think the tribe is way ahead of most others....i dont think they are quite big enough too have floyd status, but i think they are every bit as talented and important in the scope of things....
hell the fact that they are turning young people on to the jazzier side of music makes me excited..and like you said the mix of traditional and computer instruments is the shiznity..
i hadnt been doing any shows because of the stale lame ass live shows going on , but after first hearing and loving the tribe ,seeing them locked it down ,and like the tribe said ,their shows must be experienced to be believed...
i see alot of older fans dissing their newer stuff at the moment , but hey they are growing , and who wants to keep playing the same setlist every year , they dont want to be piegon holed into the same stuff, at least thats the way i feel
and i love the fact that there is no singer fucking it all up
and the scene they generate is wonderful...most shows have a great vibe and cool peeps

I'm surprised so many people feel that way about Radiohead. I'm with OMR.
And as far as tribe goes, I've never seen them live, but any recordings of live shows I've heard (and that's quite a few, I used to date a "tribe kid") aren't my cup of tea at all. I'm sure they're great musicians.

i saw the tribe about a month ago and daft punk's pyramid blew sts9's light show away.
funny thing, im only 24, but i felt super old at the tribe show i saw.
bunch of teeny bop glowstick kids.
nothing they were playing seemed revolutionary to me. however, i did enjoy it and would definitely pay see them again.
i think an outdoor show at night (redrocks) would be way better than the venue i saw them at
i seem to remember liking particle's music much more so than sts9

ive been to a few of their shows and the best way to see them is in a latenight spot at a festival. you really get the most out of them at like 3 am with everybody just grooving on the same wavelength, its not depressing at all. they are doing quite a few festies this year def. a must see.
