New User Restriction...

I have an idea. I think alot of people find the shroomery, and, instead of taking the time to read something, they register, ask a dumb question or two, and then split.
I think it would greatly increase the quality of the forums if the system was edited so that, upon registering, there would be like a 5 day waiting period where, when logging into the website, the homepage would pop up as the search page, and users wouldn't be allowed to post. Not a long period, just enough for people to acclimatize to the search function. It seems that alot of people reg'd and then just post dumb stuff, or come out sounding like the man or something.

Is there a way to require the user to log on a certain number of times prior to posting as well?
Give them time to look around and all... instead of just attempting a post, getting an error message and deciding to come back 5 days later.

yeah i could see someone registering then coming back once they could post.
perhaps a certain amount of time logged on, would be a good fix.. however i dont know how feasible that is.
it seems like the boys are far too busy with the growery to fix problems that exists within this community

dude, if you were suddenly thrown into a shroomery admin. position you would shit your pants how much money they make off this site alone each year.
while there in much interest in the growery.. the possible profits is what is driving the admins IMO.

I'm not hating. Everybodys got to eat.
I think it's tight that someone took something they loved to the next level - and made money off it. It's the American dream that most people subscribe too.

oh, im not hating.. im just poiting out that the current community, which is huge and striving is taking a backburner to the new site when this site still has room for improvement.
i guess it's just a matter if priorities. i feel as though the shroomery should always have priority over the growery however money talks.

This idea presents a difficulty. The primary function of the mushroom hunting forum is to help prevent people from being poisoned. There was a guy awhile back who found his baby daughter nibbling on some random mushroom in the back yard. We IDd it for him as a harmless species of Russula. It was his first post.
There was another guy who came on a while back after eating his finds. He was positive that his ID was accurate, but six hours after eating them, and still no trip, he began to worry. We were able to narrow the possibilities to Panaeolus or Coprinus, neither of which is toxic. I think that was also his first post.
In order for the Mushroom Hunting forum to provide it's primary services, the forum needs to be open to people who find us in an emergency.
If limits like that are placed, the mushroom hunting forum should be exempted. Maybe the contam forum should also be exempted, because contamination can also present an emergency situation in which people might first find the shroomery.

how bout a 5 posts per day, for two weeks/a month, in the community forums. That would surely slow the puppeteers.

Actually, new users already get a screen like this when they attempt to post in an on-topic forum:

We also have pretty reliable systems in place for tracking and blocking puppets. So I share your sentiment but I think your idea presents too much of a barrier to entry for new users.

Before posting in any non-cultivation forum, users with user 50 posts are scanned for open proxies, web-based proxies and TOR. If they're using an anonymized connection they can't post. This ensures that any posts are from their real IP and gives us the ability to permanently ban them if we need to. I've been making gradual improvements to the proxy checker over time and it's gotten pretty good. It hasn't stopped people from trying to make puppets but it's virtually eliminated the "unbannable" members who keep coming back under 50 different names.

And the puppets weren't my concern, although that is an interesting point. I was moreso trying to cut back on the countless questions from first post users that pop up in cult/ asking something that could easily be found with the search bar.

I'm new here and have used the search function with great success. There was in the past 4 or 5 weeks were i could not find the answer to some particular questions. While i was permitted to post to an active topic and received feedback to those questions two other times there was not an active topic on something i wanted to know. I did notice after i tried to start a topic question that it said i cannot start new topics. I can sure understand that some people don't search and really are to lazy to even work a little bit for success in their hobby. But not all noobs like myself are like that. I even tried to search for posts containing " cannot start new topics " . Nothing of relevance did i find. I wrote an off the wall my cousin Vinny story about my problem in my journal. I was refereed here to see if possibly i could get the issue cleared up. I thought maybe there was a restriction in place for new members but i can't find anyone else asking about this issue. And no i don't believe there should be restrictions placed. If a questions been asked to me about welding a thousand times by a apprentice i answer the question and let them know all the information is also in their study guides. Depending on what mood I'm in i might not give a detailed answer but i always give a correct answer. It helps me to think about when i first started welding i was exited and asked a million questions. Most of the older welders felt as i do now, privileged and respected to be there for a 20 year old kid who needs to know something. Just another perspective.
