PLEASE DIGG! Ron Paul Pledge - a new site I made

** Edit: You guys are awesome, thanks for all your support! Please digg this site and help it make the front page! **
(Please note this post is about a personal site, I'm not representing the Shroomery in an official capacity.)
So some people may have noticed the 'Ron Paul' banner in my sig. At least I hope so. I made it all animated and distracting on purpose. I've posted about him before but for the politically disinterested, he's a Texas Congressman running for the Republican nomination in the 2008 United States presidential election. It is not political rhetoric to say that at this point, he is the only mainstream candidate with a rock-solid track record of upholding the Constitution and demonstrating unwavering support for individual liberties. I support him because I agree with his politics but also because of his consistent, principled beliefs. With Ron Paul you know exactly what you get, and what you get is really rather exceptional. For example, he has never voted to raise taxes, he has never voted to raise Congressional pay, he has never voted for an unbalanced budget, he has never voted to increase the power of the executive branch, and every year he returns a portion of his annual budget to the U.S. Treasury ($50,000 in 2000). If you haven't heard of him, I strongly encourage you to read up and see what you've been missing.
Really, the only legitimate concern about Paul is that he's too much of a political maverick to gain the traction needed for a presidential bid. Fortunately the stats seem to be turning in his favor, with a tremendous swell of internet-based support. Based on metrics such as YouTube subscribers and unofficial web surveys, he's a huge favorite. But as of yet, that popularity hasn't translated into a showing in traditional, nationwide polls. There's still a perception that supporting Ron Paul is just throwing your vote away, and unfortunately a belief like that can easily become a self-fulfilling prophecy. So I want to change that notion.
I just started the Ron Paul Pledge site at http://paulpledge.com/ with the idea of collecting pledges from people who plan to vote for him in the primaries and (hopefully) presidential election. It's partly just to help drum up interest and demonstrate some grassroots support for the campaign, but the main thing is the big number right there on the front page, providing assurance that when you vote for Paul and you won't be voting alone. Of course right now it's not very reassuring. There's one pledge - mine. But I hope that will change in due course. I'm using my bully pulpit as an admin to ask for help from everyone planning to support Paul on election day. Please head over to the new site and help me kick things off by entering in your pledge, and perhaps an inspiring comment. Once the count doesn't look quite so pathetic, I'll submit it to Google and StumbleUpon and start promoting it around the web and hopefully it could be huge!
A little technical information... the site is all Ajaxified and the count is updated in real-time. The comments are random and are also periodically changed. You can enter an e-mail and receive an automated reminder to vote in any relevant elections. And since I didn't want to be operating at cross-purposes with the official Ron Paul site you can also check a box to subscribe to the official newsletter at the same time (this requires a zip code). If you leave a comment and also fill in your zip code, it will automatically display your location by your name, but it only ever shows your last initial. I tested everything pretty thoroughly but please report any bugs you notice.
Thanks for reading my long post and for your anticipated support. Woo hoo go Ron Paul!

In modern politics, the only thing less likely than seeing such an ideological libertarian on the Democratic ticket is seeing one on the Republican ticket--which is what he's running for! While such an independent mind might actually do fair-to-good in a general election, he is too estranged from either party's ideals to win a nomination. Most Republicans hate libertarians for their social and foreign policy stances, and most Democrats hate them for their fiscal stance. I, on the other hand, admire them as more-or-less ideologically sensible, even though they're almost always apeshit insane when you get right down to it. Can't say that for sure about Paul--he may be sane, if only because he refuses to run on the Lib ticket.
As a self-described democratic socialist, it's probably rather bizarre that I'd rather see this guy in office than Hillary Clinton (who I would in turn rather see than anyone other than Paul in the Republican Party; sort of a lesser-of-two-evils scenario). In the end, though, Obama has my vote in the Dem primaries, with a possible exception for Edwards, if he can poll well enough by the end to make it a worthwhile vote. A benign and wasteful government is preferable every day of the week to an oppressive and wasteful government, which is all I can see when I look to the actual front-runners in the Republican primaries.

Well Ythan, to be honest, normally I don't even vote do to the fact that all politicians tend to be crooked thieves, and I'm an anti-authoritarian and an anarho-primitivist. But to help support your cause, as I think your a cool dude, and I really don't care who wins, because Bush can't, I'll fly the Ron Paul Banner.

I would disagree, I find Libertarians (myself) are much more likely to vote Democrat than Republican. Conservatives run as Republicans, liberals run as Democrats (aka commy pinkos.)
Nice idea Ythan, there's a growing group on Facebook to support him, I'll throw this link up over there I'm sure they'll love it.

Thanks for the heads-up Ythan! I got #23, and I will vote. It amazes me how many of my friends talk politics and complain about the system, but can't be bothered to get off the couch and vote.

You're trying to win votes for a politician in a sitewide announcement?

The site has no substance. Who's gonna wanna digg that? Remember, we're conquering lethargy here.

Well there are already lots of sites providing substance, including Paul's own which recently got a much-needed upgrade. I'm not trying to reinvent the wheel or steal traffic from other people which are already doing a great job spreading his message. The point of paulpledge.com is to fill a niche, for people who know about Paul and are on the fence, or for people who already support him. But I'll continue to expand the site if I think there's something unique I can offer or do better than anyone else.

Ron Paul is for a small government with limited powers, and although he's not a particular fan of drugs he's well aware that their criminalization has cost taxpayers billions of dollars and stripped Americans of basic civil liberties. In practice he has a consistent history of supporting federal decriminalization and has stated he would leave it up to the states to decide the legality of specific substances.
