have you toilet trained a cat?
    #6856586 - 05/01/07 03:45 AM (6 years, 25 days ago)

I plan on getting a kitten this summer when i move into my new apartment, and as it grows and gets a couple of months old, i plan to start toilet training it. Read a couple of sites on how-to, formulated my plan of attack.. seems completely feasible.

so just curious, have you tried toilet trained any of your cats? rousing success or abysmal failure?

I trained mine to shit in a bag, drop it on my neighbor's doorstep, and light it on fire.

My parents' cat started going in the toilet of its own free will.

i dont know - when i see cats pooping in the toilet on americas funniest home videos - it is funny - but i know when my cat pisses, he steps in it - and then if hes feelin up to it, he'll lick his paws. I dont think id want those pissy paws walking all over my clean toilet seat - where I put my precious, precious ass. just a thought.

they sell cheap kits at petsmart or wherever. Had my siamese using the toilet like 17 years ago but the other cat we got at the same time refused to so had to keep a litter box around. Needless to say the siamese chose the familiar litter box to the toilet in the end but im sure it woulda kept using the toilet if i had completely eliminated the litterbox

one of our cats came to our household toilet trained, but, since hte other cat used a litterbox, we decided to have them all use the litterbox instead of teaching the other one how to use hte toilet...

there's a tutorial on our cat's breeders website on how to toilet train a cat, but, it's all in finnish...

though the breeder told me that it's a good idea to get wire netting to put in between the toilet and swi ng toilet seat (so they can eventually learn how to position themselves on the seat and shit/piss everything into the toilet properly)

I've heard of cats peeing down the tub drain all by themselves. I've looked at the training methods before & you really shouldn't have any trouble with it - especially if you start with a kitten. The only downside of having a cat use the toilet is I'm pretty sure its impossible to train them to flush afterwards. You never know though.

1. Buy a sitz bath from Walgreens; they're cheap and work better than the kits out there.
2. Be very, very patient. Keep telling yourself it's a few months of annoyance for years of no litter. (A kitten will probably learn quicker).
3. Check out this group; they are really helpful.
4. You can teach them to flush, by hanging a weight off the handle. Only problem is, they might decide to flush all the time, for no reason...

LOL

I really should look into this, one of my two cats has the nasty habit of leaving her ass hanging over the side of the litterbox...so I often get a nice aroma filling the room, followed by the cleaning up after a cat scat photo shoot. She had diarrhea a few weeks ago, MERCY!

I'm not going to mess with those training kits. the sites i've read said they're over-priced and inferior.

I read several tuts, each one a little different than the last, but i think i found the one i plan to use. going to teach it to use the litterbox first, because that's natural for cats. the box will be right next to the toilet. I'm then going to replace the box with a disposable aluminum baking pan.

very gradually (since it's a kitten, i'm going to have to wait for it to grow so it can make the jump and keep balance), i'm going to raise the pan to toilet height. Then eventually fasten it onto the toilet, and then finally, put it in the toilet, shutting the seat down onto the lip of the pan so it stays in place. All the while, the pan still has a moderate amount of litter in it.

Then i'm going to cut a small hole in the bottom, and start to decrease the amount of litter. Over the next few weeks, i'll gradually make the hole bigger and bigger. The reason for doing this is that originally, the cat will be squatting in the base of the pan. as you start to increase the size of the hole, eventually the cat will put its front paws out because there isn't enough room for its whole body to squat in the pan. then it'll have to put one leg out, then the other, eventually balancing on the toilet seat to shit.

i'll leave it like that for a while as the cat learns to balance while shitting. then i suppose it's smooth sailing from there.

the toilet the cat will be using isn't one that humans will be using too often, so not really worried about that.

Yeah he hangs his ass over the edge of the toilet and takes a nice dump/piss. I took a picture of it once because nobody would believe me. I will see if I can dig them up.

what I have done b4 is just use its paw to dig a little bit into the kitty litter a couple times a day and it will start doing it itself

no, my cat uses the old fashion box. But now it shits everywhere because it's pissed off at the world for being old, and probably declawed after slashing my chest 12 years ago.:(

Watch Look 'Who's Talking TOO' sometime again

there's a great toilet scene, unrelated subject to the cat's where there's a grumpy toilet wanting the kid's pee pee...
