Pot stills are ideal to carry flavor into the distillate. Since yeast has a flavor of its own, and so does wash, this will tend to end up in your distillate.
A good wash makes a good distillate, a bad was gives a bad distillate.
You can increase the purity by distilling a second or third time. Moonshine that was three times distilled (stereotypically labeled XXX to reflect that) usually was good purity but with turbo yeast formulations you can get the same purity when twice-distilled in a potstill.
Activated carbon may free single-distilled alcohol from its off flavors.
So, it is possible with a pot still, but harder.
