Cowgold... what do you believe defines a hippie? I don't even know what your reference to 'the machine' is atm.
I think each person has different viewpoints on what makes someone a hippie, and also, what makes someone a bum... there's a difference, even though some try to blend it and cover it up by calling themselves hippies...

The machine = Economic Society = The man's holding me down type shit.
I think what makes a hippy is a combination of common ideas (spirituality and such - I agree with some) and a usual inability to make any positive change because they sit on their ass all day bitching about the man.
I know I'm being vague, but it usually occurs to me that I'm in the presence of a hippy about the time I say, "Shutup hippy."
I don't hate them, btw. Just annoyed. I have met some really cool older self proclaimed hippies that are just chilling out. Relaxing. They figured out how to enjoy life without out all kinds of superficial shit. Most never get that far.

a hippie is someone who is into the counter culture. the problem is people have latched onto the counter culture of 40 years ago instead of developing their own and living in the now and thus have become a parody. a "hippie" is an individual who has embraced the spectacle of being a "hippie" instead of being a hip individual in their own time.

well, I honestly think you've got the stereotype of hippie stuck in your brain as a viewpoint of all hippies. ^.^
I'm very active, I hike and backpack, I garden, I work, etc. Though I do believe the 'machine' needs re-adjusting and could use some work on. I'm not qualified or allowed to really do much, nor is anyone else, the best we can do is vote.
Remember, the last time hippies tried to be active, they got a face full of teargas. They've got reason to avoid conflict nowadays. ^.^

It's not a viewpoint of all hippies. I realize it's a generalization, but there are exceptions to the rule. I like some of their ideas on how things should be, but they usually don't have a way to make it happen. I don't have anything against them except that I get tired of hearing the same song over and over. Do something if you want change.
And the machine is almost a living thing, it changes everyday.
