uncontrollable shaking
    #6335051 - 12/05/06 02:56 AM (6 years, 6 months ago)

it's been happening for a while now. i used to just tell myself it was because i was so cold.
i'd look around and see if anyone else was shaking, but i never saw anyone who was.
but it started to happen when i was somewhere inside, where it was warm.
'it' being uncontrollable shaking. my whole body does it.
two nights ago i realized how big of a problem it was when i was at a party.
it was a pretty small party, and i knew 2/3 of the kids there. five of us went outside to smoke pot, while the rest drank. it was freezing outside, and i was shaking so much. and i looked at the other four, and none of them were shaking, not even the girl from hawaii who wasn't even wearing a jacket at that time. i tried to ignore it, and hoped they wouldn't notice so much.
after we smoked, we went inside, and i went to sit on the couch while everyone else danced or sat around.
and i sat there, shaking, nonstop for at least two hours straight. i couldn't stop. i tried to tell myself to calm down, that i was just high.. so i got up to go to the sink and pour myself some water. i stood there shaking, even as i brought the cup up to my mouth, every inch of my body was shaking.
and nothing i did or told myself could stop it.
later when i was sober and back in my room, i thought about why that was happening, and why it happens. and i noticed how it only happens when i'm somewhere surrounded by new people, or people i don't feel completely comfortable with, or going somewhere new where i know i will have to deal with people. anxiety. that's what it is. but it's so completely severe that it's physical.
i'm thinking maybe i should talk to a psychiatrist on campus ? i'd only tell them about how i shake a lot, and how i can't have a full night of sleep, that i wake up every few hours.
but i don't want to tell them anything else, but i'm afraid they will ask other questions i don't want to answer.
i don't know what to do, but the shaking is tremendously embarassing.
any suggestions will be appreciated.

Your inability to sleep is probably tied into this problem. I know what it's like because I've had it, too.

I would go into the ocean and get cold, then come out and fail to relax, which caused me to continually shiver for no good reason. I mean.. there is the shivering the warms you up and comforts you and then there is the shivering that you are just doing because you can't help it. For me, it was also because I was worried about it. I couldn't think of anything better to focus on, so I just kept shaking as a way to get rid of energies. It's really as simple as telling yourself to relax and just doing it. It may take alot of effort on your part, but it will happen because you make the concious effort to let loose and give up unnecessary tension. Just breath and focus your energy on your abdomen's involvement. That will help you to understand how your body is posture and you'll be able to make adjustments and relax as is needed.

Just like shivering, your fear of people is largely due to the fact that your focus is on it. So, where is the return on your energies? Why are you thinking so much about that? What do you want or need? When you get down to the simplest factors, you gain a perspective on what is necessary. Think about your heartbeat and how it pumps blood through your body. Imagine how it would be to spend an entire evening analyzing your heartbeat in a social situation. What do you think would happen? You would start to see how different desires and emotions have different effects on you and you would probably start to analyze things logically by choosing what is important to you and what you want to focus on to stay relaxed, comfortable, and have a good time. You end up looking at the big picture by starting at that one small, yet important variable.

Some s tuff that I always recommend to become healthy and strong... food, exercise, sleep.

It's simple for me. I just stop thinking about other stuff and feel. You can feel gravity pressing down on you. You can feel lots of stuff. You can hear. You can see stuff moving or certain things of interest. You can shut your eyes and imagine what it is like to be happy and you just might find yourself smiling. The point here is that you are experiencing alot of stuff and, when you take the time to appreciate it, it is really cool.

Try flaring your nostrils and feeling the air go down your nasal passages into your lungs.

I know that this seems silly, but it will give you the right kind of knowledge to understand how you work and then you can focus on the more important, timely stuff.

I experience EXACTLY this sometimes. sometimes I get really anxious when around people i'm not very comfortable with, and when I'm outside where its cold I start shaking uncontrollably. cold weather I usually wouldn't find that cold sober is extremly cold when i'm high like this.

Its suprising that no one has really found an exact answer to why this happens, whether its the drug or the persons own problem, it seems more and more people are experiencing negative effects from smoking. it should be researched. -_-

yeah, i've never experienced while i was high though except for that other night.
every other time i was extremely sober when i was shaking.. but i never shook as hard as i did when i was high.
i googled it.
it seems like people take xanax for it.
but i don't want to talk to a psychiatrist about it :\

benzos work incredibly well for relaxing you. Klonopins are my personal favourite, because they make me feel very relaxed, at ease, and my anxiety almost turns off while i'm high on it. but of course, this is no cure.

i've taken xanax and another benzo (that i can't remember the name of right now) for recreational three times. the first time i took xanax i was at my friends and we all fell asleep anyway. the second time i felt so calm. but it didn't affect me as much as it did him, mostly because i had high anxiety at that time and it calmed me and i felt content. and then i took some other benzo two days before i was leaving living in florida for eighteen years to move to oregon, and i was saying goodbye to a friend who came by, and i felt weird, but content.

i've been trying to find xanax here from a kid in my hall. but he doesn't even know what it is.
and i'd much rather get a prescription. but i hate talking face to face to anyone about my problems.

i do hurt myself. but i wouldn't tell them that. never ever would i tell them that.
everytime i had to talk to a psychiatrist, i basically lied my face off.
i just want to tell them simply about my extreme anxiety and trouble sleeping and see if they could just prescribe me something and then maybe i'd just go back a few more times just to tell them how the meds were doing.

I've actually had almost the same issue. For me though the shaking/trembling started really when I was high. Then after a time it continued regardless of my state of mind, unless I was drunk or on some downer or another.

Like you, I attribute it to anxiety and self-consciousness. Concentrating on it only makes it worse. And simply telling yourself to stop or worrying about it or whatever rarely works, and sometimes makes it worse.

Your mind and body are inseparable, so if your mind is ill at ease, then your body will likewise be ill at ease.

Nowadays I don't really have this shaking much anymore. I don't know if there's any one particular thing you can do to stop it. First, change up your lifestyle. If pot makes it worse, then stop smoking pot. Get exercise, go on walks, take up yoga or t'ai chi (they're wonderful practices no matter what!). Try meditation. Practice deep breathing. If you find yourself growing anxious in social situations or really any situation, deep breathing is awesome!

Also, don't worry about worrying. The more you worry that you shouldn't be worrying, the more you worry! Just experience the worry and let it be. Don't fight it, and it won't have any fuel to continue. It may not be immediate, but it will go away.

Benzos like xanax do certainly help, but only while you're under the influence. The problem, of course, is that they are very addictive and habit forming. You have to ask yourself if you really want to become dependent on something else for relief to the point that you can't relax without them.

Don't see a psychiatrist if you're going to lie to them. That's just wasting your time and their time, and your money. IME, they truly can be helpful, but they can't help if you won't trust them and open up to them.

This is just my experience and my advice, so feel free to take it or leave it as you'd like. I really hope you're able to find peace and relaxation!

I used to sweat instead of shake. I had it bad for many years. I'm glad I worked it out myself. You can you know. :mushroom2:

take short breaks from smoking (for starters, one week) then smoke again. if this happens again, or anything else thats not good, put it off for longer. Plus it makes you really underestimate how good being sober is sometimes.

Dude I get the same thing sometimes. I guess its from taking drugs, since it never really happened before then. I guess its just a nervous energy or something. I get it when I fight with my girlfriend, thats how it started, and now I get it at somewhat random times, like talking to different people... When Im realy nervous, which I dont understand, i dont really ever feel truley nervous anymore. I dont know what to tell you. I dont see why its embarassing though. Dont be embarassed, it happens to many people. its just bothersome to be shaking, try breathing slowly and deeply. I know what you mean its annoying sometimes.
