 Why does Mississippi have a bad rep?

Mississippi is a great state. There is no more racism there than any other states.
I am the only person I know who never hated their home town.... I love my home town of Ocean Springs... which is half coastline. 2 nice beaches, and about 5 sub-tropical islands ranging from 1/2 a mile to 11 miles out. Half of the state is a forest.... and the police are pretty lax... especially on pot.
Also, there is no time when bars are forced to close.... there are a few bars there which are open all night long... but that is a county by county issue.

I think everyone loves their hometown once the nostalgia kicks in. I love my whole home STATE, and I always will love Alaska.

I love my home town. It took moving out and going to the city to recognize my appreciation for hometown roots.

I spent some time in Meridian, back in the 70,s.
I found everyone, black and white, to be good people.
But there was some killer sized mosquitoes.

I think I can honestly say that Mississippi has a bad rep because of U.S. vs Cecil Price where the civil rights workers were murdered. There has also been a lot of movies that portray this state as being the either the birthplace of the Ku Klux Klan or highly active. Climate, economics, and culture also play a huge role.
At least that's my perception of why people may dislike your state. I've never been there personally though.

I lived in the south before when I was younger and living with my parents. I'll probably never go back. I cant deal with rednecks and the lack of culture and diversity and being so far away from a major city. I also cant deal with being in a red state. And the southern accent just makes me cringe. Too many country boys and white trash. Near monoculture. Oh yeah, it's too hot down there anyway - I need seasons not just Summer and slightly-cold and I enjoy trees that actually change colors in the fall.

Mississippi is the only place I know of with drive through liquor stores...

OP, i'm about twenty minutes from you. pascagoua actually. so have you had any luck this season? went pickin in saucier two days ago. actually. found around 300 caps (only 1 being a psilocybe cube.. so disappointing...
and as for our shitty reputation.. well i see mississippi having several problems.. one) we are always on the bottom end of almost every statistic (fattest state, most meth labs in US percapita, highest teen pregnancy rate, lowest income percapita, lowest ACT and SAT score in the USA, highest highscool drop out rate. need i say more? one can say that this state is stuck in the past; unproggresive to every extent of the word. ultra conservtive, pompous religious fanatics who base their political ideology on rush limbough and all the other fox news assholes dominate our political spectrum. in addition, most the kids i went to high school were kinda racist- (not to the extent of wanting to bring back jim crowe laws but severely prejustice and biggots) they truly thought they were better than anyother minority simply because they were white.

I understand they only polled GOP members in the state but damn, you figure its probably a 65-35 GOP to DNC in MS, thats a very large number of people who believe black people (or any other race) shouldn't be allowed to marry white people.
I'll agree that the state gets a bad rap, but it is somewhat deserved.

I lived in Gulfport from 2003-2005. I worked at the Gulfport Grand Casino there. That was the most scammiest place I have ever worked. I did not like it there. I grew tired of it. I was in a bad relationship at the time though. The cool part of the town was the bars staying open until 5-6am, really good coke, and I found a really good X hook-up. I don't do coke anymore and X is even rarer these days. As a matter of fact 2003 is the year I found the shroomery when I first moved there. I wanted to grow instead of trying to pick them.
What the posters wrote earlier about it being a red state, prejudiced and so on was what I did not like. BUT, the pot that the government uses for the few people that have prescriptions is grown there. I think it is the only state in the US that can grow it, right?
Another nice thing was that it was only about 45mins to New Orleans from my apartment in Gulfport. I used to hang out at the bar that all the casino people did. The owners were freaks and big cokers. Always a party there every night if you wanted it. Too much!
I got to meet REO Speedwagon there one night after they played the casino and I asked Kevin Cronin about that band REO SpeedDealer. He just looked at me and said in a very snarky tone, "oh they shouldn't have done that!", that was priceless! They were going into the restrooms three and four at a time and you know...
