yeah, today's rap is just horrible compared to the 90's. only rap i listen to now is outkast and the roots. i'm kinda worried that outkast might be going the wrong way though. both have new albums due out this month, hoping they are good.

I agree late 80's and mid 90's rap is the best. That was the golden age of rap. Im gonna have to bust out some NWA or some Public Enemy.

amen. I got a copied rjd2 cd off my mate, and I haven't stoped playing it. that track you quoted is probably one of the best on the album (although the intro is good too ;D)

Yeah, I think we all agree that there are different types of "rap" music. Afro is obviously referring to mainstream rap, hot 97 bullshit, 24" rims, guns, bitches in bikinis, etc. This can be fun music in a club, but lacks substance.
Then there is gangsta rap, which has obtained popularity/notariety for it's lyrics, often obscene. There are some good gangsta rap albums, the classics like Chronic and E. 1999, but not too many strong artists with careers.
This brings us to hip-hop. This is a very loaded word, which to many refers to an entire culture that includes breakdancing, graffiti, mc'ing, dj'ing, and damn I forget the other one. (:stoned:) However, to me and many folks, it is the label we put onto rap music that is not mainstream, ie. "underground". Although I see in this thread people referring to The Roots and Common as underground, nah I don't think so...
Underground hip hop is also often referred to as conscious hip hop, due to the lyrical content. Many artists that have been mentioned in this thread share a positivity in their music, combining their mc skills with a sense of responsibility. One of the best examples of conscious hip hop is Blackalicious. Everyone should listen to Blackalicious, I suggest Blazing Arrow for a starter album.
Anyway, just thought I would ramble on in a academic style about music that has really helped me through the last few years. I use to hate rap music, because I thought it was all bitches and hos, gats and rims. But when a friend turned me onto Blackalicious and many others conscious artists, I realized what an awesomely honest art form it is. And the beats are head-noddin, I love me some straight up, hip hop beats... This is where I got into DJ Shadow, RJD2, etc, because of the love of the music behind the skillful lyrics.
Oh, man, I love hip-hop and am glad to see that fellow Shroomerites do to. I must now brag abour seeing Lyrics Born, Common, and Blackalicious each perform complete sets all in the same tent on the same night this year at Bonnaroo. What a night!

Oh, and please check out Aesop Rock, what a lyrical wizard!

In the late eighties to the mid 90's, rap was unique and from the street.

(I remember hiding Public Enemy tapes under my bed so my mom would not find them! ) In my opinion, rappers back then had real lyrical skill.

But just like any good thing, it gets commercialized and lost. How many "rock" and "metal" records out there suck ass? Need I say Metalica's "Saint Anger"......????

Personally I like Busta Rhymes
But you are right, for the most part, every new rap album looks the same, has the same back beat, and is fucking annoying!

1988 was the shit!!!!!!!!!!!!

yea Cunninlynguists and Masta Ace-seasons a song that perfectly discribes the ughh/rap crisis

but for me im fine listening to innovators

edan (beauty and the beat is the shit dope, hip hop over rock samples)
def jux (mr lif mo mega is doing it for me now)

vast aire (a emcee that is abstract but still can rock a freestyle battle)

of course aesop rock- labor days being my favorite (still deciphering lyrics)

illogic (the song sacrifice deserves a listen from anybody with a open mind)

MF DOOM (biggup niggas (dont worry im black) that flow intelligent but still have their ear to the street

right now im partial to jazzy hiphop

3582 situational ethics (the song late night is dangerously funky)

dudley perkins and j rawls- its the dank and jammy show (good vibe on the album)

but if you ever get discouraged about rap throw on nas-1 love or it aint hard to tell
