Seriously, this is exactly why as soon as the new version ubuntu linux comes out (in a month) i'm trashing windows. The beta is very nice so far, especially with xgl installed, though buggy. Sure i wont be able to play windows games, but thats why they have game consoles... the Nintendo Wii looks like something i will be buying.
That nag screen was the last straw, and who knows, maybee they are watching everything we do... probobly not... but apparently they know we have an illegal copy of windows.
Sure i could buy a copy of windows xp, but why waste 100$? I might as well wait for vista to come out if i'm gonna pay money for an M$ operating system.

However, the name and description are hardly truthful. The "Microsoft Genuine Advantage" ... please, why not be honest and call it by what it really does, "The Microsoft Piracy Detection Tool". The description is a real joke as well... However, I agree with you, people should be paying for their Microsoft junk rather than stealing it.

My problem with activation is that I paid for the license on the software, and they STILL wont let me use it. Have you ever tried activation and their (windows) systems are down and unable to verify your installation and generate an unlocking key?
That's when I tell the friendly operator that they just made it harder to use their software legitimately than to bypass the activation completely.

yeah and you could go out and buy a copy of xp...but then if you ever upgrade your computer guess what? you have to buy ANOTHER COPY. thats what is so fucked. I mean they say oooo pirates pirates RUN RUN...but all i see is ooo ooo more money more money fuck everyone! i bought a copy of xp, an operating system to use to run computers...i should be able to use this on any computers i have...its like this..
i buy a car...it falls apart but i still have the engine...so i go put it insomething else....but then someone says HEY you cann't do that!

i have yet to hear a coherent and logical reasoning for continuing to use a product that is such a pain in the ass.
don't give me the usual bullshit about games and photoshop blah blah. imo, if everyone who "hates" windows stopped using it then 3rd party software developers would be forced to develop for alternative OSes. Truth be told, M$ wants you to steal their OS if you can't/won't pay for it.
Regardless if you pay for it or not you lose and they win when you continue to use their OS.

Hardware and software support 10x better than any other platform. Easy setup. Consistent and intuitive user interface. Why are all the Window managers nothing but poor MS clones? Yes if everyone stopped using Windows, Linux would have better software. And if it quacked, it would be a duck.

I disagree, mostly. The interface tends to be consistent, but it is far from intuitive. How do I turn off the machine? Oh yes, press the "Start" button. Very intuitive.

Although I love Unix, it is not an OS designed for non-computer type people. In a very real way, Windows is difficult to use for non-computer type people. From a simplistic, easy to use for a non-computer person, OS-X really is the best. At the same time, OS-X has as many problems as the rest.
I would love to see the major hardware players work together to design a modern, stable, and secure OS. Something that would be free and level the OS playing field across various hardware.

You need an SP2 slipstreamed CD. With the firewall pre-enabled it's safe to install Windows even without a router. 
I think Linux's biggest hope on the desktop is online services. Already everyone uses webmail, plays media through Flash applets, Meebo is a genuine competitor to client-side IM and there are several online office suites. I think ubiquitous, cheap or free high speed wireless internet will make it happen. That's where I'd be focusing if I wanted to compete with Microsoft. I think Google's on top of it with all their dark fiber and their pilot free wifi programs. Of course didn't Sun think the same thing back in the 90s?
So since this thread is veering off-topic anyway , the recent Slashdot article makes me wonder where you stand on the whole micro vs. monolithic kernel debate.

I haven't given it much thought lately, but I always liked the micro model over the monolithic model. A well threaded micro kernel should scale much better than a monolithic kernel given equal effort. As it becomes cheaper to increase the number of processing units than to increase the clock speed of a single processing unit, I suspect a move away from the monolithic model will occur. Imagine a chip with 128 64-bit cores all running at 2 GHz; it is going to take a lot of threads, from the kernel, libraries, and applications, to saturate such a chip. Even a small 8-core version would be difficult for most current OS' to take advantage of fully.

I might agree that linux is not yet ready for the common desktop - grandma and other non-computer savvy individuals might be lost at first. however, I think within 5 years, it will be quite common. since I've used linux in the past 4 years, it has progressed quite steadily and becomes more and more user-friendly.
and I've said this before here, windows is relatively easy to setup but a pain in the ass down the road. linux can be hard to set up at first, but runs smoothly later on. I guess that's the choice we have.

i recently received malware on my pc.... they are getting harder and harder to delete. This time i got 2 versions. got rid of the worst one, but i have another.
i have a open source version on xp, and i have no problems with updates... just the stupid user created fake programs i happened to run... idiot, idiot, idiot

Microsoft has already said, more or less, that malware is getting too good and that the only real way to deal with it is to reinstall. Not running a Windows OS, I wouldn't know, since I have never once been infected with any sort of malware... and no, I don't run any sort of antivirus software either.

People have been saying that for the last ten years. It isn't going to happen. The problem is not Linux, but rather Unix. I hate to bash unix, because it is my favorite OS, but it simply is not designed to be user friendly to non-computer people.

I belive that is an unreasonable approach. Versions of MS OS's I own:
MD DOS 6.2
Windows 31.
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows NT/2000
Windows XP
How much do you think all that cost? Do you really think it is anything short of piracy on their part to demand that I pay more simply to run my windows-only programs? If I want these programs then I need Windows, however I only need windows because I want these programs. Free alternatives are not solutions when they don't do the things I need done - and they don't do those things simply because MS sees to it that DirectX tech cannot cross over. Just for that MS should not be supported.
MS are bandits and I feel no shame in taking their OS out of need. In fact I feel built up knowing that I'm not allowing myself to be a doormat by handing over more of my limited income to the richest man in the world. If mr. Gates were within my reach I might downright strangle him.

I dunno, if you bought OEM copies probably around $750 over 15 years.
Are you pissed at Intel too because the CPU you paid $400 for in 2000 is now sub-entry level hardware?
