iexplorer is a fucking bitch. Anyone know how to get rid of it so I never see it popping up with errors or running in the backround sucking up my precious memory?

"iexplore.exe" is Internet Explorer, the internet browser. It should not be running in the background unless you have Internet Explorer windows open. Although it is possible to uninstall it from your system, it would not be a wise move, in case you ever want to surf sites that only function properly in IE, for example the internet-based windows update service.
If you are talking about "explorer.exe", that is the windows shell (which provides things like a window system and a desktop). It is possible to replace the default windows shell with a third-party coded shell, but are you sure that's what you want to do?

Internet explorer "iexplorer.exe" runs constantly in the background without me having the browser open and it regularly pops up with error messages/must shut down, etc. I use firefox for everything.

Sounds like you have been malwared... microsloft recommends a complete system reinstall to fix these types of problems.
As for removing IE, you can't, more or less. Microcrap embeded IE into the OS so tightly to prove that it cannot be removed (for the antitrust case), that they made it so your system becomes crippled if you try to remove it. Of course, this is when the malware people really started abusing Microsucks OS... consider a different OS, perhaps?

Start>Settings>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs>on the left side, click on Add/Remove Windows Components>Uncheck the Internet Explorer box and click next
Wala! No more IE...for now.

That doesn't remove internet explorer. It only removes the shortcuts to internet explorer to fool you into thinking you've deleted the program.

Correct. As I said in my previous post, you cannot realistically remove IE from winxp. Microsoft made absolute sure of this because they didn't want the courts to force them to unbundle the browser during the antitrust case. Enter malware and the fun we have today...

I think it is possible to remove it (IIRC) using third-party software specifically designed to remove integrated windows components. The same software can be used to remove windows media player.
It's still not a good idea.

Would it be possible to replace the executable with a dummy, blank file that you had renamed?
Or, would it just repair itself like the horrible bloody T-1000 that it is?

There's no reason to uninstall IE. It provides common controls that a lot of programs rely on. If you were to uninstall it, you'd find a lot of your apps whigging out about missing DLLs. Any problems are a result of malware, not IE itself.
If you disregard this advice and insist on messing up your computer, the easiest way is to create a custom install disc without IE and reinstall from that.

Well, I suppose i'll just leave it then. Microsoft sure is a bitch. I would get a mac if I were to get another computer, but I've had this one for a long time now and I have so much shit on it and I use it for work, so scrapping it isn't really an option. I don't trust my computer skills enough to go linux. I'll look into this malware shite.

Follow the order:
-Format, Intall Win XP
-Install SP2 if needed
-Install AVG free edition (connect to net, fully update)
-Install Ad-Aware SE (connect, fully update)
-Install Firefox 1.5 browser.
-Remove IE shortcuts from desktop and quicklaunch. Replace with Firefox shortcuts.
-Be happy because you'll avoid 99% of attacks designed against IE.
Dont ever open stupid emails. AVG will catch any virus if you happen to download a crap file. (ie, a crack file for a program).

Remember, do not connect to the internet until you have completed all of the steps outlined above by RuNE... gotta love these secure/bug free programs that Microsoft shits out...

I am running on a mac right now... not sure how I feel about it yet. I like it much better than Winblows. With OS X, it has the BSD Unix subsystem, which is nice. There is also an 'emerge like' open source system that lets you install almost anything open source that has been ported for the mac. I can run xine, vlc, transcode, ffmpeg, gtk, xwindows, gimp, gcc, php, mysql, etc...
The mac doesn't have as much 'stuff' as windows... not sure if that is good or bad. For me to install and configure a new windows box takes about six hours. It took me less than ten minutes to get my mac ready to go. (The six hours go into the steps outlined by RuNE, above.)
The biggest complaint I have on mac is the lack of 3rd party software that I am used to with windows. For things like video work, compression, etc, the mac blows away any product written for windows.

Alright hotshot let's see some benchmarks.  Maybe true for the Intel-based Macs but only until the core-duo is widely available through retail.
Unless you're talking about functionality. In which case I'm glad you like your one option. Personally I just go out and find a program that does what I want since they all run on my system.

Before i wrote SP2 to a CD, all i had was Win XP basic. 0 service packs. I would usualy install it and let it download SP2 by itself.
Well, i got hasty one time and tried to dl from a distribution site. Bad idea. Even thought i never touched any 'crack' site or anything near it, that brand new system that i built for my buddy got INFECTED TO FUCK, and i mean SO DEEPLY that no AVG/Ad-Aware could clean it (i installed them after the infection).
One of the official distro sites infected it, i have no idea how. But it was so incredibly bad that i had to reformat.
So now i have 3 CDs.
Win XP
SP2
'Cleaner CD'. (AVG free, Ad-Aware, CWShredder, a few SATA controler drivers)
The new systems dont connect until everything from the cleaner cd is installed, and ready for updating.

I should have been more clear... I was speaking of software use rather than hardware performance. There is no doubt that dollar for dollar one can build a much, much faster machine than a mac.  However, the mac is much easier to use than a PC, especially for somebody like my mother that is slightly computer-phobic. The audio/video software available for the mac is hands down better than anything I have seen for the PC or for Unix... for those of us that are authoring DVDs and the like.
Also, I would never recommend a mac as a server device, any more than I would recommend windows as a server device. Unix is king of the server world. Microsoft (and probably Apple) would like to have us think otherwise, but we know the truth here.

Hehe, reminds me of the bad old days when we ran this site on NT with Access. The newbies who complain about our occasional downtime haven't seen shit. I know tons about Windows, so did Aphex, and if we couldn't get this dinky site working with IIS I dunno how any large corporation could ever expect to. I may be a bit of a Microsoft apologist but I think selling any version of Windows as a server OS should qualify as false advertising.
