Here?s the deal. I know there are several Shroomerites out there who want to cultivate Azures outdoors.
I am looking for a mentor to help me and the rest of the willing Shroomerites out in azure cultivation.
I propose an on going photo thread designed to walk cultivators through outdoor azure cultivation. I would post regular photo updates and welcome others to as well.
I hope to have some sort of assignment schedule that everyone could follow. eg. Finish spawn preparation March 1st. Prepare outdoor bed June 1st, etc.
Here are pics of some transplanted Astorian Azure mycelium from November. I have kept in on cardboard over a mix of peat/verm. I will be transfering some samples to agar plates in preparation of a spring bed.

Here is an azure culture from an old print I took in 99 in hammond, Oregon.
Here is an azure culture from spores I got from Joshua a couple months ago.
Sorry about the quality, I?m still trying to get this digicam to work well. I?ll post updates, I just started up some grain from the old azure culture as you can see there?s a wedge missing. any feedback is appreciated

Very cool, my azure spores are just starting to germinate, how long did it take to take over that much of the plate (Joshua?s spores). Josh and I picked lots of Azures this year hope to see some fruits from that strain?

It hasn?t been more than 2 weeks for Joshua?s spores. They were a lot more agressive than the old ones. I isolated it a couple times and that last plate has only been growing for like a week. I?m going to grain and then wood and I?ll post updates on both strains. I?ll get some better pics soon.

Here is a little better picture. It?s starting to get a little blue in the center. The original plate I did bruised like crazy when I cut it up. I?m trying to get used to this new camera, It?s a 2.3 mp hp camera. It?s supposed to be really good but I just cant get real good close ups. I?ll keep trying.

You really should try and get them in the ground before June. Ideally you want the spawn run this time of years indoors, have it planted in the ground by early spring, then hopefully fruit that same fall. If you dont start it until June, you may not see fruits until the following fall.

Yeah I got it going early just for that reason and I hope to have it out sometime in march. We didn?t get much of a winter here so the ground should thaw up sooner than that I hope. I?ll post my progress. later

Im gonna use sawdust/bran in 1 pint jars, Inoculate agar wedge culture, then spawn larger alder chips in trays, then place spawn under a Roadodendron bush covering with more larger chips and leaves, then cover that with black plastic till fall, take plastic off in beginning of october, start fruiting, Be a happy camper!!! Does this sound good enough, or does this need any other modification, please help?

I am in need of hardwood spiral-cut dowels. Where can I find these? I will be using these as spawn for my bed. I went to a hardware store but they did not offer a very good price for bulk, about 10 cents a piece!

You should get you some smoke chips, they are much cheaper than dowels.

What would make a good spawning material? Should I just spawn chips to chips?
For my substrate: How about pet bedding? I found a large quantity (.5 meter cubed) for $10. It is made from aspen. I suppose the best would be fresh alder. I have access to a chipper and fresh alder branches. I was planning on using the chips for the substrate. I am unsure of what material would make for good spawn.

wow! Great post! Ive just started on that azure print you sent Joshua - i dont have any agar supplies at the moment so i had to streak them into a malt/water medium - just waiting to add h202 as soon as they germinate.
I really find from experience with woodlovers in Australia, that nothing beats picking your own mycelia and spawning from there - its soo easy and there is no real need to be sterile if your working with wood chips.
My Ps.Australiana / Subaeruginosa are doing really well - after they began pinning invitro i added some more cardboard and they have taken to this like mad!!

I go this route:
agar -> grain(millet) ->sterilized woodchips in jars -> pasteurized woodchips in bags -> outdoor woodchips bed

Ryche whats a good time to get them in ground here on the east coast.. say virginia area? We are still getting some frosts here. I was thinking like mid march the freezes should be over

A light frost(a few degrees under the freezing point) won?t harm the mycelium. So unless there?s a deep winter expected to come, you could make a patch today.

I?ve been busy 
On 2/16
I innoculated two agar plates to start my cultures. One was innoculated w/ multispore, the other from some mycelium I transplanted from Astoria into a jar w/ some cardboard and wood chips.
I will update the agar plates soon. I think the one with the transfer is contammed. I am going to see if I can get some mycelium to grow and then transfer to a clean plate.
On 2/17
I also began preparation of my bed. I chipped some woodships of both alder and maple. I have at least 50 lbs of fresh woodchips now! I hope you all enjoy the pics. I broke a sweat making the bed.

hee hee! Someone just started several cultures the day after you did. Half Cyans. & the other half Azures.
You should get yourself one of those big plastic bins. You know, the ones at Wal-Mart that look like big planters with the rope handles. Once you have some spawn, you can mix it into those bins filled with alder chips and keep them nice and toasty in a dark place somewhere until about May. You?ll have a shitload of colonized chips by then.

Joshua that outdoor bed looks GREAT! Baby Bear is even more excited about growing outside. Here in Texas we have some really great days of high humidity and cool temps just right for an outdoor bed.....Keep us posted on your progress.

To make sure you get your spawn material ready for your bed a culture should be started ASAP
The plates I started the other day are destroyed. I have been having ant infestation problems and they found my plates. I will be plating again today. This time I will be sure to seal the plates with tape.
These are some of the fruiting parameters for cyans. I believe these figures should be appropriate for azures also:

This is a jar of P. azurescens mycelium on soaked sterilized beachchips inoculated via rye spawn 5 weeks ago.
This jar will be used to inoculate about 5 quarts of soaked pasteurized chips, which will then be used to inoculate an outdoor bed.
If you haven?t started your outdoor azurescens or cyanescens project yet, NOW is time to do so!

I?d spawn the myjor part of them in your bed, but you could use at least a part of it to make some spawn.
Last year I planted the azures under a beech hedge.

I am going to try to establish cyanescens in my garden in Toronto. I guess I?m late for this year but there?s still snow on the ground here. The azurescens has been established all around me in Virginia, Michigan and Wisconsin. My climate is similar. I am glad you find the cyanescens mycellium more vigorous. My cyanescens spore syringes are on their way from Sporelab.com. I notice you don?t use any cardboard in your process. Some people are having very good results with this even fruiting the azurescens on plain cardboard. I am determined to have success with my project even if I have to put heating cables into the ground. I am going to try using the Orchid Bark which is Douglas Fir as this is one of the woods that cyanescens likes. I have a lot of it left over since I switched my orchids to coconut chips.

Rhododendrons were planted in May.
The bed was spawned with a mixture of 7+ quarts of colonised maple/alder chips and freshly sterilised (using bleach and peroxide) alder chips on 6/23.
Here are some pics w/ captions.
I typed this damn post 2 times with more detail and lost it to damn Yahoo! pop-ups  . So this is what you get, it?s probably better this way anyway.
7 fully colonised quart jars consisting of some alder jars and some maple jars.

Are you pastuerising or sterilising the Wood spawn?
I`m assuming sterilising would be fine because you don`t have to protect any of the anaerobic bacteria present in bulk spawns?
OR am I wrong in saying that?
Also Joshua you were saying you had an azure print for sale??
Is it still available?
I`d like to try this with a fridge instead of outdoor.

The woodchps in the jars were PC?d.
The chips I used for the final spawn mix had been stored outdoors in a garbage bag. When I opened them I found plenty of green. I was contemplating a couple different methods for preparation, but decided sterilisation was the way to go so that all of the mold spores would be killed.
I soaked the chips in a weak bleach sol?n for 24 hrs, I then added a couple of bottles of %3 peroxide and let sit another 24 hrs.
I don?t believe psilocybe species rely on micro-organisms to aid in fruiting, so killing them all off shouldn?t have been too big of a problem. I think that is what you were asking.
I checked a few weeks ago on the level of colonisation. I gently moved the composted woodchips aside until I reached a solid mass of colonised woodchips, the spawn took and took very well!

It very looks that the woodloving, cold temperature fruiting species DO require some kind of an aditional trigger along with cooler temperatures to start pinning, possibly the right bacteria.
I think Workman could elaborate more on this.

Where I live in febuary it is -20 fahrenheit... which brings me to another question. How hardy is the mycelium of the azurescens? Can it withstand a hard frost or would it require some form of protection from weather that cold?

From my own experience it seems that something in the soil flora stimulates the fruiting of azures. I don?t think its required for pinning but may be necessary for normal development into a mature fruitbody. More work needs to be done.

Nope, it has been too dry. The temps have been dropping though and I expect it to start raining heavily w/i the next couple of weeks.
I have been watering the bed irregularly with gallon containers that have holes in the bottoms. There is healthy rhizomorphic mycelium just under the top woodchip surface.

i wish you all the best for your outdoor beds. mine are not looking great, the mic seems to be disappearing, rather than colonizing   i think i might have overwatered it during initial colonization: i remember anno saying that this might give initially appearance of healthy myc, but then it doesn?tfruit. i think that?s what is happening to mine right now.

There are quite a few miles between where you live and where Youinforit lives. From what you said, I would guess you found some azures locally, if that is so you have found them the furthest from the coast I have ever heard. Would you clarify what you meant?

I checked my bed today and found some small azures growing. They didn't look too healthy...probably due to a couple of recent freezes. The extended weather forcast calls for rain to start in the next 2-3 days and last for 7 days. I figured these pins were damaged and picked them. There was probably one group that could have developed further.
We shall see.

Those look delicious Joshua. I'd like to grow some too but I live in Maryland so I think it would be a waste of time. I'm going to do a little research on azures and see if I might be able to pull it off in a humidity tent sort of thing. What temperature range do they colonize at?

I was really happy to see the pins. I am hoping that the freeze did not halt the fruiting. I am hoping for a sweet flush in the next couple of weeks. I hope to get some nice prints and specimens.

Ohio's a lot different though. What part of Ohio. I live on the eastern shore which is a bigass flat cornfield. It is a bit dryer and its only 5-30 ft above sea level here. I imagine the temps about the same so it would probably work with a humidity tent if it did okay in ohio

i'm having a shit of a time trying to get some alder/maple woodchips or the use of a woodchipper. all the woodchip places have only fir and hemlock chips, would these produce satisfactory resuslts?

Probably not. I don't know for sure. Hardwoods are best for most woodloving species.

well if spruce works, i don't see why fir and hemlock wouldn't work.
but i suspect others have probably tried it before. i guess i could try it...
woodchips from hemlock the tree, not poision hemlock the plant is what i was talking about.

well i just found an answer to my own question, at the online mushroom community www.theomc.com
Substrates for Fruiting: Hardwood sawdust and wood chips, especially alder, cottonwood, oak, birch, and beech. Douglas fir will also support fruitings.

Here are some pics from Sunday. I hope that this is the start of a nice flush.
The stem in this pic is from one of the rhododendrons I planted, It looks like it was a good idea.
The area where the pins formed in this pic is where something (me or a deer) left an indentation in the bed. The indentation exposed some of the underlying substrate and caused pinning to occur.
This is some rhizomorphic growth from another area of the bed. I doubt if it is azure mycelium, but thought it would make a nice pic anyway.

Any sluggestions on how to fix this? I ran into the same problem w/ another outdoor patch of a different species this summer. I tried beer, it didn't seem to work. I want to use something non-toxic.

High Joshua,
I always protect my seedlings by covering them with a kind of maze. Thin enough for slugs to stay out. A same sort of thing is used to keep flies out of your food when outdoor eating. Hope to have given you some inspiration to deal with the problem
How about potent slugs for dinner?????

Ofcoarse it is called a screen. Or maybe a wire-screen. The stuff I use is about 1cm*1cm as all the residential slugs seem to be bigger than that.

tip : to keep slugs at bay plant garlic .
most other insects can be repelled by sprinkling used coffee grounds .
and , empty beer cans will keep deer out of your garden , because it smells like a deer hunter

Hey Joshua, that is a very pretty fruit. I?m glad someone else is getting only a few peeps here and there this year. This is the best one from my cyan clone patch this year: It only produced about 10 mushrooms total 
Seems like the more you try to make the spot ?perfect? the fewer fruits it actually produces. Who knows, next year may be a completely different story

Yep, yep, I only beat you by a month or so. Way too late. The bulk of the bed is made up of those aspen pet shavings, only the top inch or so are actual chips.
We need to get our ass in gear this year I now have a line on as much alder as I want; I just have to drive about 2 hours and cut the damn trees down and chip them myself.
The lady has a few friends, thinkin' of coming up north?

I'm an oregonian at heart, stuck in a job that's in a different state. I lived in portland till i was 18, then moved to LA for a job that offered me far more than I was making there.
I leave oregon as my locale because the spore issues with CA, and because there's some pretty intense govt crap going on in CA with drug issues, feds vs. state... it makes it a pain, and i'm paranoid.

I will be providing better drainage and may add sea salt to the soil.
I think that rhodies help. I made two beds each next to rhodies. One rhodie died, that bed produced 0 fruits. The other bed fruited well. You can actually see the fruits growing very close to the stalk of the rhodie. I think the chemicals you refer to are active only against certain plants. The chemicals are likely growth inhibitors. I don't think they pose a proplem to the fungi. Many outdoor beds of cyans and azures are grown in the company of rhodies.

I haven't thought too far ahead. It will be a very weak solution. I will probably spray it on. I may do a test on some salted wood chips to make sure the mycelium is salt tolerant.

They grow in the immediate coastal zone. Most azures are found within eye sight of the ocean. I friend accidently tasted his fingers after picking some and noticed that they were salty. I figured salty soil is probably only found very close to the ocean just as azures are, maybe there is a correlation.

Worth looking at id say deb.
The Psilocybe azurescens spawn im producing at the moment is
Agar to hazel (Corylus avellana) chips
In plastic containers missing out the grain step, and things are going well.
This is also workig very well for Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

I am restructuring my azure bed. I will be removing the old chips and adding new and will be growing other species instead of azures.
