so what yeilds the most? a substrate that is 5 inches deep, or a substrate 2 inches deep, both with the same about of nutrients.

There are a lot of other variables involved but I'm inclined to say the substrate that's 5 inches deep. Of course other factors come in to play.....

its usually best to increase surface area as long as you won't be laying shit too thin. if you fill your surface space and have more shit to work with, go deeper.

so yeah, fill available surface are and then go deeper after that point.

its the same volume of water/nutes, but one is deeper and another has more surface area. more suface area means more space for mushrooms to grow off of. deeper usually means bigger mushrooms. more surface area usually yeilds more total weight.

Really....I don't doubt you. But I would have thought 5' would produce bigger then a smaller one. I don't think there would be more or less either way.

Rev. Paul AKA the man says that mushrooms can draw nutrients from up to 2 ft deep in the casing! Deeper casings make bigger mushrooms, but increaced chances of contam's during colonization.

Snag, they are saying that you use the same volume of substrate, just at a different thickness so more surface area is available.

Surface Area! It has always been my favorite. All you need is 2 inches to get dense mushroom growth like this:

This will always be an arguable debate, but thats my personal preference, when I have more poo, I spread it out more..

like i said, go for surface area first unless you go below like 2 inches of poo. once you max out surface area, go deeper.

the advantage of surface area is that it should take less number of flushes to use all the nutrients. this means that there is less total time spent fruiting and therfor less chance of contams. however if you are going for big fruits requite deep substrait. but again both should yeild the same when all is said and done.

Thats a good point, I go to get all my harvest in the first flush primarily, and a little in the second. If you add up all the flushes, of both, youd probably get about the same...I like 1-2 flushes though.

And do make sure you go at least the 2 inches, maybe a bit over doesnt hurt, especially if you mix your horse poo with coir, chunky verm, perlite and such non nutritious things to beef it up..but 2-3" works for me.

Absolutely beautiful fruits, and look at that pinset. Picture perfect Scat. I'm going 2" from now on. If it's good enough for Scat and good enough for my girlfriend  it's good enough for me.

Those two trays won't be the same volume..?

I say surface area for sure, so long as the substrate is ~2" deep, you're fine for 3-4 flushes.

regardless of Pauls findings, ive always read not to go deeper than 4in.
in my experience, yeilds were almost the same with 1in. to 5in. of substrate. the only big difference was the size of the fruits. i think its safe to say that there is a correlation between depth and mushroom size.

i think a substrate with more depth will give u bigger and more flushes, but not as many shrooms as one with a wider surface area

the bigger surface area probably will have less flushes, and slightly smaller fruits.

however, since they are equal in volume, in the end, they should harvest the same weight.

so i think its just a matter of how many flushes u want.
