Huh.. I didn't know Thomas Sowell was black. And to complete my jaunt off-topic, I've got a copy of Vision of the Anointed I think it's called... need to finally finish it, put it down for a while (ahem.. i lost it ;\)
Oh, and on the topic of racism, I find it horribly funny and saddening that if you took two people, with the first stating they believed that all races are equally able to succeed in life, and the second stating that minorities need help from the government in order to be equal to whites..
the first would be labeled a racist, and the latter a champion of equality.
(that, and the fact that the congressional black caucus is actually the congressional democratic black caucus.. if you're a republican, you're apparently not black)

Thomas Sowell is a brilliant man. He's one of my favorite political and social commentators and his books on economics are must reads. Every high school student (and certainly every politician) should be given his "Basic Economics" as a mandatory-read course textbook.

Did you say you think the minimum wage is unnecessary?
(I assumed you were referring to programs like this when you said government should let private business take over.)
If so, I'd be interested to hear why.

Minimum wage is based on the ignorant assumption that you can mandate a certain wage and then companies will all raise the wages of their employees. The fact is that when minimum wage is raised, that lowers the number of employees a company can hire, and some companies end up going out of business because of it. So while some people's salaries may go up, other's salaries will drop to zero.
