For $299 per month, shouldnt you be able to set up your own server with as much bandwith as you could ever use with a dsl connection and as much space, ram, etc you would need. I am taking a computer class and within the last couple weeks I have learned enough to build my own server, I just need to know how to network it.
I do indeed plan on setting up my own server with a dsl or better connection in about 6 months. I plan on having 1032+ ram, 1.4 ghz+ cpu, and oodles of hard drive space. With one what I hear you pay in one month for this site, you could pay me for a year, and that is to pay for my maintanence of the server, and adding the programs you would use, and to pay partially for the components which are not that cheap (save for the ram, of course, that is dirt cheap).
I am not saying any of this would happen, but it seems to me that if $299 is indeed what you are paying, you should be able to set up your own server based upon the donations you recieved and a bit more out of pocket cash and not have to worry about monthly fees again, only for connection and electricity.
I dunno, I think I am just dreming.

man, i am relieved... i just couldn?t picture a life without a shroomery... there would be something missing... i?m glad this worked out... thanx thor and 3d for the excellent job... and thanks to the people who donated for keeping this place alive...

the only problem with setting up a site like that (off of dsl) is that its a relatively small "pipe" for lots of people to use at one time. I'm sure the server they have is on a major backbone with at least dual t3's if not oc3's

Yeap, people don't realize that dedicated server hosting is not cheap, you can get decent packages for around $300, but we had to get a bunch of 'add ons' to speed up our site, like added RAM which costs a stupid extra $150 a month added to our base package.

the problem with all that is for their monthly fee the're getting about 100g worth of transfer, at probably oc12 speeds (thats something like 256mbit/sec, if not more. I never really bothered to memorize all the speeds)
DSL will max out at 7mbit up and down, for 1.4mbit up/down it costs around anywhere between 250 and 500$ depending on where you live, not to mention your gonna need more then one for redundancy in case one goes down.
Although your right on with the building your own server, except then you need to be half way proficiant with unix and networking. (except your gonna be putting 1024MB ram not 1032)
I did some pricing on different speed lines when we opened our computer store, the fastest line available to us is a T3 (several times slower then the shroomerys current net connection) and the telco wanted some 15,000 a month, 1200 for a T1. Frac. T1 wasnt an option. So, paying even 1000 a month would be well worth it.
I just wish they could build their own server and send it to the hosting company, things could be so much faster here. =(

Wooo Whoo!!! I'm glad to hear we made our goal.. As for nushroom he can fuck off.. I don't know you guys from jack on the street but I've made a donation and yeah the thought crossed my mind that, it would be a good scam but I don't feel like you could do that to your bud's at the shroomery. I know I couldn't.
As for alternatives:
I'm sure that if you could work out an arrangement with the hosting company about putting a server of yours on the backbone we could come through with something. I would volunteer my 6yrs unix/networking experience in helping get a server built. If you PM me where you guys are based out of I will help in researching additional options.

Anyway, I know dsl is not going to allow enough transfer, so I say dsl+ as If I were going to have a site like this hosted on it I would definatley up it to something much better. Cable is an option. I say dsl as that is what I can afford by myself, but given a few bucks per month extra and I would set up something much nicer (faster, better).
Anyway, there would be many more qualified people to do something like that as I am still just a student.
Oh, and I know it is 1024, just a thinking error. All the different ram sizes can be a bit hard to remember, but it is just 2X 512.

No offense but IMHO our local news station recieves advertising dollars that our nationwide PubliclyBroadcastingSpores network doesn't.
If this $$ is so badly needed, and I have no way of knowing that answer, then there SHOULD DEFINATELY be a sperate forum granting access to ALL of The Shroomery's financial records. And in the event that I can see that it is warranted, I would definately contribute to keeping this place open. I can't trust (or mistrust) someone because I like them. That kind of shit landed someone I know in prision.

We will be opening the books so to speak, more of a FYI of our bills, to whom, how much, etc.....
Right now there's some problems with our current host, we've been unable to access our online billing history for a while now and those bitches are not of much help getting it fixed.
One day I see the Shroomery actually making money, when that day comes I will either use that money for paying 3Dshroom or anyone who is running the site, or for things like T-shirts, promo stuff, etc.....
But yeah accountability is important, I agree with that.
But this isn't a public access channel, this is a privately owned website. People who donate understand that and obviously support us. I will share with you what I feel everyone should know, but I'm not going to have all the websites finances available for anyone to see....

The min. order is 24 I think, and I think it would be a very idea, or maybe even those patches they have at hardcore and punk shows that you pin on your backpack.. id get one of those. Something to consider.. because alot of people suggest things, and I never ever ever see any of them happening!!!!!
