Mushroom season is here in Ohio. I went out to my favorite hunting spot today and found the first fungus of the spring.
 [Scarlet cup, Sarcoscypha coccinea]
They make for great eye-candy after a long gray winter, and they also signal that black morel season is a few weeks away. I actually ate a handful of these last year and I'm still alive. I wouldn't recommend them though because they are way too small.
BTW, Ramps are also starting to pop up. I'm making a ramp chili one night this week. Yum... Get ready for Morel season Ohio!

Thanks Evan. It's still quite cold. These guys don't mind freezing at night; they thaw out in the next day's sun and continue to grow. Neat mushrooms.

Nice!
I was out picking wild garlic yesterday and found loads of wood ears!
I know wood ears are supposed to grow year round but I only seem to find them in the spring in the UK.

Here are a few photos from yesterday's excursion to an oasis in a brier patch.
[LBM, Galerina?] This was the only mushroom I saw yesterday. It was only about half the size of a dime, and was growing from a dead rose branch.
 [Ramps, Allium tricoccum] Yum!
 [Red Spider Mite]
 [Tiny Spring Wild Flowers]
These are Crocuses from my mom's garden. They make me happy.

Happy Spring!

HI Shroomy Day, great photographs of the flora.
Howevetr, i do not think the orange shroom is a galerina. the gills, the little of them I can see are widespread apart.

Hi Again Shroomy Dan,
Just a tip on the photo taking. That image of the lavender flower with the orange petals is really beautiful in color. Next time when you find a good flower, use a small pair of scissors to cut the dead yellow grass and the pointed green blades from the image so that you can show the whole flower in all of its radiant glory. You can also crop the flower in the image from the original larger image so that the flower fills the whole image.
Anyway, that flower sure is pretty.
have a shroomy day and hope to see more flowers. i love them.

Thanks MJ, I didn't notice those pieces of dead grass until I posted the pictures. There is definitely an art to taking good photos.
Here are some from this past weekend.
It still seemed very much like winter early in the afternoon on Sunday when I arrived at my sacred garden.
 [shroomydan-mobile]

But there were signs of life.
 [Marasmius?]
The woody underbrush plants were just starting to sprout their spring leaves.
 [wild Rose]
And some fragile wild flowers were in bloom.

These trout lillies will be blooming in a week or two. The red mottling of the leaves helps the plant absorb more sunlight and also helps them blend in with the brown leaf littler of the forest floor. By the time they bloom, the leaves will have turned a solid green.

Some wild green onions. I think these are in the Chives family.

These shelf fungi were also out. I didn't try to identify them.

A woodpecker has moved in to this forest. I couldn't get a shot of him, but here is some of his work. I'll be checking those piles of woodchips for shrooms later in the season.

Check out this gnarly tree.

And this gnarly grape vine.

The sun showed its face later in the day.
The scarlet cups were out in force.

Another neat tree.

I hope you all enjoyed the photos.
Peace Love and shroomyness.

Here are a few finds from this week.
 [False Morel, Gyromitra gigas]
I found conflicting reports about this mushroom's edibility/toxicity. Arora says that some people like them better than true Morels, but one field guide from Colorado says they are deadly poisonous. I think I want to try them. I'd like a second opinion on the ID and would also like to know if anyone has knowledge about its edibility.
Its a good thing I didn't get hit by this Sun Dog.

Or stung by this sweat-bee.

These are sprouts of an invasive Asian plant which is taking over the roadsides in this area.
 [Japanese knotweed, Polygonum cuspidatum]
I think the one in the back looks like a devil's tail.
This is a Trillium (Birth Root) which has not yet bloomed.
 [Trillium pendulum]
Birthroot is said to be used for coughs, bronchial problems, hemorrhage from the lungs, pulmonary consumption, and, especially when boiled in milk, for diarrhea. It is also used, both internally and externally, for female problems. For insect bites and stings, a poultice or a salve is used. American Indians used it as an aid in childbirth. http://www.holistic-online.com/Herbal-Med/_Herbs/h87.htm
Some unidentified wild flowers.

A neat tree.

Tree blossoms, maybe Witch Hazel.

I think this tree looks like a toilet.

This is slime mold.
 [Fuligo septica]
Some Skunk Cabbage
 [Symplocarpus foetidus]
This is Liver Leaf
[Hepatica nobilis]. It was once used to treat liver disease.
Trout Lilly
 [Erythronium americanum]
Blood Root
 [Sanguinaria canadensis]
The root contains several alkaloids, most notably sanguinarine, which has shown antiseptic, anesthetic and anticancer activity. American Indians used the root for rhuematism, asthma, bronchitis, lung ailments, laryngyitis and fevers. The red-orange juice from the root was applied to warts, used as a dye and a decorative skin stain. Bachelors of the Ponca tribe used it as a love charm, by applying it to their palms and shaking hands with the woman they wanted to marry. Within 5 or 6 days, the girl would be willing. http://www.holoweb.com/cannon/bloodroo.htm
And here are some scarlet cups forcibly ejecting spores.

These seemed to be breathing. Periodically when a gust of wind would blow, they would release these little puffs of spores. I first noticed the phenomenon in with an orange cup fungi last season; it seems to indicate that the fungus is sensitive to pressure and 'decides' to release its spores when it feels the wind blowing. This behavior seems to indicate that mushrooms are more like animals than plants.
Any comments welcome.
Hopefully when I update this next time there will be morels.

There is so much of that stuff around here that stomping it would make no difference. It spreads by rhizomes and by seeds, so it is nearly impossible to control. Nothing seems to eat it either. It grows up to eight feet high in dense stands which shade out all other plants. Sadly it appears that Japanese Knot Weed is here to stay.

that looks like the G. gigas I find up in the cascades here, I have seen people harvest large amounts while I was out looking for morels. I was thinking of trying them once, but the conflicting reports on edibility kind of worry me and I haven't tried them still. this thread has some good info on them: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/2415209/page//fpart/all/vc/1

gyromitras have rocket fuel in them. why you wanna mess with that? mmh is very volatile, so theoretically it can be cooked out. but people have died from the fumes while cooking them! so, again, why you wanna mess with that? just wait for the trues. yum. -jaa

About the Japanese Knotweed. You can eat the young tender shoots (8") until mid spring. It is somewhat sour, so try it first. Use sweet things to create contrast. Dont eat the leaves and dont eat the ones by the road.

I don't think G. gigas contains the rocket fuel toxin, but better safe than sorry.

Michael Kuo's page summarizes the false morel issue. http://www.bluewillowpages.com/mushroomexpert/false_morel_toxicity.html I wouldn't try them, but I imagine that the people that eat them know at least as much about their toxicity as the scientists. Wallace

Ramps make bulblets.
Most people only hunt them in the spring when the leaves are out, but they can be harvested year round if you know what the flower heads look like. They are probably the most potent of the wild onions; two are three small bulbs can really spice up a pot of chili.

"Despite scientific evidence that false morels are poisonous, they are eaten by many people. I concede this point. Many mushroomers in our area scoff at warnings about the "beefsteak morel," since they have been picking and eating them for years. These people are lucky. It is quite possible that Old Bob could eat beefsteak morels for 20 years, and one day keel over in the kitchen just from breathing the fumes of the cooking mushrooms. It's probably possible to press your lips to your car's exhaust pipe and breathe deeply once a week for 20 years without ever feeling the effects . . . does that mean you'd do it?"

Great pics Dan. You're getting awesome with that macro. Just beautiful colors and wonderful mushrooms. I'm getting jealous out here in Colorado - over a foot of snow last week, but temps in the 70's this week. We'll see what we find! Thanks for turning me on to this forum.
