That point when you finally decide: "I'm going to get fired!"
    #3887523 - 03/08/05 03:43 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

Well that's it. I've had about as much bullshit from this corporation as I can stand!

Today I made the sober decision to get myself fired. Why, you might ask, wouldn't I just quit? Well if I get fired I get a 2-week severence pay, AND I then qualify for unemployment insurence (time to get some of those tax dollars back!).

So, I want to get myself fired. I'm not going to be blatantly obvious about it, because that's not how I like to operate. Instead I'm just going to generally DO NOTHING for the time I am at work.

Any suggestions? I work in PC tech-support, on the phone. Anyone else had this job and decided to fuck it? What did you do? GIVE ME SOME IDEAS!!! :yesnod:

I have an idea...

You can "accidently" send an email to your boss talking about what a big butthole and a huge douche he is. Make it clear that you thought you were emailing a friend.

PC tech support is really hard to get fired from. I know cause I had a job like that for a while. I came in 15-20 minutes later than all the other phone agents, was constantly on break, and would take an extra half hour for lunch every day. my boss called me into his office all the time to bitch at me but never fired me. go figure...

here's my suggestion: do something funny like tell people blatantly false info, or that they called the wrong number, even though they went through the "press # for this" sequence when they got through, or pretend to have a thick Indian accent and keep asking the caller to repeat everything they say until they get frustrated and hang up. have fun with it..

Yes, I used to work phone tech support and it was indeed a shit job. The job quickly lost its appeal as soon as I realized that the goal was to get the customer off the phone as quickly as possible rather than actually help them. Also the business I worked for was run by dumbasses from some sort of hellish insane asylum. We did tech support for Gateway computers and they practically went under since then so I was going to lose that job eventually anyhow.

Just stretch out those calls as long as possible..You said you weren't doing much anyway, why not have fun with it? Engage the callers in long conversations about any topic that interests you while you wait for scandisk to complete or some other long, drawn out meaningless task. You'll eventually get fired for your marathon call times and have fun doing it.

Just stretch out those calls as long as possible

Actually, I have been told on MANY occaisions that I need to MAKE MY CALLS LAST LONGER!!!!

Yes, that's right. My handle time is "too low" at 12 minutes/call average. My handle time is low because I actually know how to use a computer and can usually get them fixed in 5-10 mins...yet the management thinks this is "too low" and that I should have a handle time TWICE as long as what I do.

Maybe I should go for a 60-second average handle time? :yesnod:

Wow. Our call time target was eight minutes.

Yeah, shoot for sixty seconds.  Get their info and have them run scandisk and call back when its done.

Hmm..When they call back do they get a random tech support person or can they call you direct?

That's the weirdest thing... a LONGER call time?

Just keep hitting the release button, over, and over, and over, and over, and over...

Make fun of customers. Take off your headset, and just start playing games.

See if you can install Debian on your computer.

Heh. Yeah, those were always the most pissed off callers. The ones who had called multiple times with no resolution (usually due to their inability to follow instructions) were the worst. It was always fun sorting through their call history while they fumed. Those callers I usually dropped at the first hint of attitude. I'd put them on hold and for some reason always seemed to hit the disconnect button while coming off hold. Clumsy me..

I've also started answering the phone using celebrity names. Fabio and Arnie have thus far made an appearance.

Why not try to chat up everyone who calls. Just make your first response 'you sound cute' and take it form there. See how many cellphone numbers you can get.

Can you record your calls? I would entirely reinvent the art of prank phone calls. Instead of people calling to screw with you, they'll call you to be screwed with BY you.

1. Pretend to be 'mentally challenged'
2. Pretend to take a shit while on the phone
3. Pretend to be schizo
4. Pretend you're actually Pizza Hut or something similar
5. Speak in a made-up language
6. See how many times you can interrupt them before they hang up
7. Choose a random word like "meow" and insert it inconspicuously in the middle of random sentences...count how times you can use it before they get pissed.

the only time you get unemployment and severance stateside
is if they have to lay you off.

if you go breaking corporate policy like drug use or explicit content
on your web browser you may not be eligible for the payout.

I may be off, but be sure you don't fuck yourself on this one.

You can't fire someone for drug use in Canada, that's illegal. Unless it's like, at the workplace.

Blatantly hit on your female (or male) co-workers...

They might find a reason to let you go.

You might fuck yourself though on this one (sexual harrassment)
and get nothing

Oh this is fun
Answer calls and just leave yourself on mute, then listen to the customer rant and rave.

This chick is saying:

"hello?"
"HELLO!?"
"i'm not gonna go away!"
"you aren't getting rid of me, i'm your worst nightmare!"
"i've got patience, too!"
"well not patience, just endurance!"
"grumble...."

Haha, good stuff.

You should occasionally take her off mute and clear your throat or something.

Well just one thing: Aren't you a bit concerned about how this will look on your resume?

I sort of get the picture in my head that [even in Canada] employers generally want people with a good track-record of maintaining job positions...

Either way, good luck!

this thread rox.

I think you're on your way, and I don't have any suggestions that aren't really overboard.

just be really annoying to the customers to give the company a bad image of shitty tech support. play games with the customers and most of all just have fun. the meow thing a la Super Troopers is pretty funny, definitely a step in the right direction.

just keep transferring all your calls to other phone operators. if you have to talk to anyone over five minutes in length, make it worth your time.

also, tell them to visit http://www.lemonparty.org

yeah, I also instantly thought of having them fdisk. perhaps be nice enough to have them download Gentoo/Debian/FreeBSD/etc. and burn it before fdisk then call you back and you can walk them through the install. however, you're trying to cut down on your call times. so, just hang up on them or make really annoying noises.

sing shitty lyrics to them until they hang up and complain to your boss.

Lol..you aren't being a total ass to all the callers are you? Not everyone deserves to be dicked around. Some people call with legitimate questions and aren't rude.

Don't be a total douche..

But if you get one that is a douche, start asking them computer questions. If they are like "I can't install Office.." be like "What is Office?" and that'll probably piss them off BAD.

But don't do it to nice people..that's just mean. Be mean to your boss, not the callers.

Working at a call center definitately has it's good and bad times. Some things that are autofail on call monitors would be something like not giving a long distance disclaimer, bad mouthing the company, and blatantly dropping the customer. Mwahaha. Sounds like you've been having a pretty fun time.

Every once in a while I slip in something nice and stupid. Heard the wisper tone one day and noticed someone was being transferred to me, usually from some dumbass indian tech...

"Thank you for calling MSN my name's Duwat"
".. Duwat?"
"Peanut??"
"Uhhh... dear lord I hope you're not from India"
"I'm from Canada, sir."
"...."
"I'm on the same continent as you, sir. Think of Canada as your little brother"
"...."
".... name and number on your account, okay?"
"...."

I checked out the ticket history for the dumbass and it turns out he phones just about every single day and ends up hanging up on every one. A senior agent told me that something as little as making up a name could get you fired where I work. Pfff.. stupid.

Another time I just totally dissed a customer. He was a total elitist bastard, had phone about 10 times a day for the past week and argued with every tech. I took a look at his notes and braced myself, I was going to be totally contradicting and "pwn" his nerdy ass... and I did, harsh. Some servers are down at MSN right now and people are experiencing random errors at hotmail.
This bugger starts sputtering off his life story and how he spends over 10 hours a day sending email, and about a total of 16 hours on his computer all together. I told him very comically that there's other fruits in life that do not revolve around a computer, and if he was so smart he could have created a sub account as he told me he doesn't care about the address, he just needs to send mail or he'll go insane. I can't post what I say on that call verbatim but damn was it ever hilarious. I had a stupid grin from ear to ear, snapping back something every time the customer said to me and damn was it ever smooth. He even came out to admit he thought I'd be another dumbass reading call scripts and information off my computer screen and eventually said he'd go outside for a walk and get some fresh air. LMAO
I really wish I had the call record to post on here. Lots of funny calls. It's the main contributing factor that I still work at a call center, and strangly enough I love it.

I just tried calling the tech line and I can't seem to get the routing codes to work.

You could also try 1-866-671-7357 (the call director) and just tell the person to route you to center 78.

No, those would be phone crackers.  These people run and maintain call-center like systems for various companies as well as themselves at home...  And the verdict is only the people that setup the system know exactly how to operate it :frown:

...  so I'm going to call the call director and see if he will tell me or switch me direct

That's a pretty high number. Who are you doing tech support for? We used to get about 5% SOB's until they switched my whole team to customer service when the rate shot up to about 80% at which point said "fuck this" and bailed.

I asked "Bob" the Indian guy if it would be possible to direct me to a specific call center and extensions so I could talk to someone specific and he said, "Hold on" and disappeared for a few minutes.  Then he came back and he started asking me what I was having a problem with...  So I said my HP Pavilion.  He said "Is it a printer or a computer?"  I said, "It's a computer, damnit, but I need to talk to someone specific can you connect me?"  Then he started asking for my information so I gave him a bogus phone number but a real HP serial number...  Then he said "I cannot understand you and the connection is bad so I am going to transfer you to my technition"  And I'm like, "Yes, only this one person can understand me, transfer me to him!"  But no dice I was already on hold, so I hung up

Seems tren's place is like my call center was- you can't request a specific tech it's totally random. I think they do that so some whacked out frustrated customer doesn't show up one day with an AK-47 and some time/persons to kill.

Has anyone worked at a call center (tech support) where they actually drug tested?

Did they have trouble finding workers?

They seem to drug test for everything in the US, so I wouldn't be suprised.

Thank god Canadians have rights.

I remember one of my first days on the job for my team who had just graduated from class to the floor..one guy was not adapting well. He said, "Now I know why everyone here does drugs!"

this thread....is awesome.  here's a few ideas, from someone who has actually intentionally gotten herself fired from a job before.
-swear randomly, for no apparent reason (tourettes style)
-in the middle of a conversation on the phone say "wait hold....PC load letter?!!!  WHAT THE FUCK IS PC LOAD LETTER?!"
-start crying on the phone about how your dog just died and your wife left you and you see no reason to continue living anymore.  Then hang up.
-start wearing completely outrageous clothing to work.  Like a dress.  Then if they fire you, you can also sue them for discrimination.
-Sing LOUDLY at your desk.  and pick the worst possible song you can.
-call in sick a bunch of times in a row, and dont give any particular excuse.  just say "i'm not coming in" and hang up.  or dont call at all.
-Put a bumper sticker up at your desk that says "I eat more pussy than cervical cancer"

By the way, I'm going to try to call you.  And god help the indian guy who doesnt put me through.  :smirk:

Dude. The phone jobs in my neck of the woods are near impossible to get fired from. A buddy of mine showed up to work on acid a few times, consistantly came in at least a half hour late, took long breaks, was rude to customers, etc. His boss used to call him into his office and say stuff like Now, son, you showed up an hour late to work today, and you havn't been on time once in the last month (sighs) I'm going to have to uh (long dramatic pause) Ahhhbuuuuhhh! They'd both start cracking up and return to doing a half assed job.

If there's a way to talk to you toll free, I'll ring you up and bull shit with you about completely non work related topics.

Also, have you thought about using recordings of celebrity voices to turn calls into prank calls? I think ebaumsworld has a bunch of them you can download.

Answer the phone with, "This is gunnery sgt. hartman!"

Make sure to throw in the bit about finger banging mary jane rotten crotch through her pretty pink panties, too.

Hmmm. maybe a close look over the dress code will leave some things open for interpretation. Things like how you define conservatively styled hair versus management's definition have generated interesting work place clashes in the past for me.

OH MY GOD!!!

Our manager just sent out an email to the entire staff, in which he let us all know that since we've been busy lately the ENTIRE STAFF will have their hours raised from 40 to 44 hours per week (the most you can work before they have to pay you OT), and that this will begin next sunday!

Now, to say that there are a lot of angry people around me right now...would be an understatement

So I pulled up the trusty Canadian Labour Code, found the section that says you CAN'T increase an employee's hours past 40/week without their consent (or the consent of 75% of the staff) and sent that whole document to my dear manager

That reminds me, when I was working tech support, there was actually a guy there who had tourettes. He was able to tell when he was about to have an outburst, so he was able to mute when necessary, but he couldn't sit right next to other people for obvious reasons.

Every once in a while though, you'd hear someone shout "FUCK!", or on special occasions "WHAT'S UP!" from across the center.

Haha classic. This girl that I went to highschool had it bad. We were sitting in class one day and the teacher's all like,"today we are going to study native americans"

she shouts out,"you are a native american!"

Every once in a while, a SHIT! or a FUCK! or some variance would slip out and you coud hear it in the classrooms next door.

those were the good old days. Now, the dude that sits next to me in history class that I take notes for pulls out his pit hair with his fingers and gives it a little taste before disgarding. Sometimes, he'll use it like floss. Our teacher is African American, and this kid calls the teacher by the name of different black celebrities that he looks nothing like. I better finish up with school, or he might wind up being my boss someday.

Everyone has their favorite tech support story. Mine happened when an old man called in with some problems that I narrowed down to a likely video card problem. The man was nice enough but really, really old. He was 86 years old and a little hard of hearing plus his voice was really hoarse. I knew this was probably going to take a while, but the old geezer had personality and I was determined to help him.

After I had determined his problem was his video card I realized I was going to have to talk him through cracking open the case and reseating his video card. One problem was he only had one arm (I'm not making this up). It had been amputated. Anyway, he was a trooper and followed my instructions and got his video back.

Well it turns out the call was being monitored by our employer and I got a glowing report for being patient with the guy..me and my team look great. A week later I totalled my car on the way to work and they moved us to customer service which I hated so I quit. When things are going well look out!!

Hah, get a bunch of tech support workers together with a few beers, and you've got a fountain of tales of hilarious stupidity.

that's pretty funny.

A guy at work start talking to me about his machine at home, and how it wasn't working properly. When I asked him what exactly it was doing, he was like, " It lost it's internet".
The way he said it was pretty funny, he dropped it off yesterday, but i havent looked at it yet.

Lol! They just backed down from the 44-hours week idea!

I don't want to say I was instrumental in this, but I did get an email from the boss saying he was "going with the plan you outlined below" (I had suggested he make it VOLUNTARY...and he did).

There is an acronym that I use when I go to new Tech Shops when I work. It is P.E.B.C.A.K.! It means Problem Exist Between Chair And Keyboard!!! This helps describe in a simple manner those problem users who don't know what they are doing but call up tech support saying something is wrong with their computer. I ran into alot of PEBCAKs when I worked at various county agencies; especially the Library system. Talking about old librarians who don't know what they are doing by seek help, some of them can talk the balls off of a Rhinoceros!

I'm thinking about getting fired from my job as well... I've had 8 last warnings about my working speed so far so getting fired doesn't seem very likely unless i decide to steal some shit which i probably won't do.

trendal, you should move forward with the idea of unionizing all the people that work for your company. hand out flyers with YOUR NAME on it with lots of anti-management messages and how with a collect voice, everyone could drive up pay and benefits, etc, etc, etc.

i would have soooo much fun with that .... i see a trendal hoffa in the making.

Man, you still haven't gotten your ass fired? lol

It is pretty hard to get fired! There's only been a few people fired at my center in the last year, and they had to fuck up pretty good. One dumbass, total stoner had worked there for 3 years, then one day he didn't give any long distance disclaimer whatsoever, gave our customer a long distance number and told them to dial it. He got fired, almost a year ago, and he's still enjoying his ui. My gf just talke to him yesterday actually, he says he's loving the ui..... I wouldn't brag about that, but atleast he got fired, and now gets some of our tax money back.

The other three dudes were looking at sites like nexopia.com all the time, and apparently some 16 year old instant messaged them some illegal titties.... now there's a kiddy porn investigation by the province. Now that's a good way to get your ass fired! But I don't think that's the most appropriate route.

And a good buddy got fired for saying something about a higher-up. He's the center's backbone, been working there for 3 years and he's the friendliest nerd ever. What he said was taken out of context and escalated to the highest level of assholes, and they fired him. So talk smack about your supervisor, or any one else who likes to throw their weight around.

When I quit or get myself fired from my work (Which I'm still baring, and liking actually) I'm going to definitely talk smack about my sups. There's a couple I wouldn't mind putting a mask on, taking a baseball bat and just dummying in an alley. Patience old boy...

:yesnod:

Dude...if you get fired, you do NOT get unemployment insurance...you need to be 'laid off' in order to collect.

I had actually quit on monday, giving my two-weeks notice, so they couldn't actually "fire" me and had to "let me go" as it was explained :smirk: So they had to pay me severence of regular pay until next friday. I think I could collect UI, too, but I doubt it will be more than a week or two before I get another job.

that kind of work is hard, I tried it for 3 weeks and wasn't making enough sales so I got frustrated and quit, trying to sell for a long distance phone company...it was stupid, I don't blame you to tell you the truth...keep you head up, you will find something else..
