What car should I buy?

I will definitely be buying one of these cars in the near future. Everyday, I go back and forth obsessing over which one I like the most. I would like to see which one the Shroomery prefers the most.

The 300ZX, hands down. It's already earned its place as a classic car. No offense, but those other cars you listed are kinda lame, with the exception of maybe the MX-6.

no offense taken. right now, I'm either leaning towards a 4 cyl. 1.8L turbo charged miata or a 3.0L V6 stealth/3000GT. I need a daily driver that is "zippy" and wont eat up too much gas. The stealth gets 20mpg on average and the miata 25 or 26.....so the miata is looking good right now.

Sorry, I didnt think auto.consumerguide.com had info on RX-7s since they were more popular in the 80s, but, surprisingly, they did. 160 HP stock and 200 HP turbo. Too bad the gas milage is sub-par. I still thinks its a decent looking car.

Too bad 300zx's only run on premium gas. And why the fuck do turbochargers cost at least a grand for a fucking MX-6???? If only I could find one with a turbocharger already installed. Ebay has one up now, but its from the first gen model and I hate that style.

Go with a Volkswagon Corrado! They are very very fast and get good milage. You can find one for under 2k or a 6cyl for around 4k. Wouldn't you rather have a hot Euro coupe? Drool on it:

The audi quattro coupe is nice too =]

"Corrado is fun to drive on winding roads, but so are the stylish Mazda MX-6 and Ford Probe. Rather expensive when new, Corrado was well equipped and relatively practical for a sport coupe--but not a good value. Similar money can buy better performance."
And I'll just plain old pass on buying an Audi.
Good thing Gumby opened my eyes to the rx-7.... if I can find a turbo charged one from 89-92, I'll be alllllllll set.

why? men arent allowed to own 2 seaters? right now im looking more closely at civic hatchbacks and CRX's. RWD wont cut it in the snow so I guess miata's and 300zx's are out of the picture. Too bad stealth's have to cost twice as much as civics AWD would slaughter

its not two seaters, those cars are both very feminine looking, and the only guys i know who drive miatas are gay guys...two seaters are cool if they are fast and look good, miatas and del sols dont qualify. but im not gonna be gettin either one of those so whatever your preference i guess...get the 3000gt..!

If I had 6-8K laying around for a twin turbo AWD 3000gt or stealth, I would be in heaven. Sadly, I barely have 3k. I know a guy who has a miata and is straight as can be, but, whatever. Its the best selling roadster of all time.

97+ ford escort. few reasons. cheap, reliable, GOOD mileage, fast, common, roomy (for a compact), and does suprisingly well off road. i am speakign of the sedans not he zx2 or wagon cause i have never driven those.
i like it but im now pretty bias. the problem is acceleration....0-60 its kinda sluggy, but 60+ it is geared so it can really go. plus the spi engine can have a shit load done to it to make it fuckign fly. these cars are easily suped up for race, and still get decentish mileage (compared to the competition). i get mid 40s mpg, or high 30s when im in a speedy mood
i should also not im a huge honda hater adn i really dislike domestic cars...except these little 4 bangers. governor is at 160 kph, but the wre is pretty easily accesible if you wanna take the scisors to it
i got my first car accident and first speeding ticket, in that order, in this little car

its the best selling because it is cheap and mass produced beyond belief...do you really want something everyone else has anyway??

hpnotiq, thats one of the main reasons I'm highly entertaining the possibility of getting a civic hatchback. I dont want to be stuck in an emergency and need to fit more than one passenger in my car. Plus, I dont know why, but I like small cars.
syanesso, one good thing about cars that are mass produced is that I wont have a terribly hard time finding spare parts for them. It's harder finding 3000gt parts and more costly than a civic or miata (even tho, now, im steering far away from that car). Plus, the fact that it is the best selling roadster of all time helps support the fact that it is reliable and people can trust them. If it were unreliable and poorly constructed, it would have only been made for a couple of years.
kadakuda, I'm not a huge fan of Ford and the only car I would think of buying would be a V6 probe. Too bad you have to pump premium into those things oh, and I rarely see anyone racing Escorts, but I bet if i search a few forums I can come up with a few vids that will make me laugh

Yeah the Talon looks similar to the late 90's body of the Eclipse but they are completely different. Both come in turbo or naturally aspirited versions. My buddy has a talon turbo with a few modifications. Last week he took a Supra TT on the track . You get a lot of performance for your money with that car. Not much in terms of passenger comfort and luxury though.

gas mileage and performance don't exist together. like a buddy of mine said once 'a car that needs a turbo charger is like a man who needs viagra to fuck'... ok, he's an aspro head. a 4 cyl under a heavy turbo pressure will drink as much as an aspirated 6 cyl (or perhaps some economic 8 cyl) straight from your wallet... i think we need a car preparation forum here. =D

You wan an efficient car that is already turbocharged? go for the 1990-1994 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST or GSX GSt is Frint Wheel drive turbo and the GSX is AWD turbo.
I drive an MX6 right now and hate it. its to damn slow and it is not even worth turbochraging it because you will only be running 8 lbs of boost which is hardly shit. the Eclipse GST or GSX can handle 25+ pounds of boost until pistons and rods need upgrading.
I had a 1990 Eclipse GST before the MX6 and hands down, the GST takes all, it has been my favorite car ever. if you have any more car questions, just ask me. I know too much for my own good about the eclipse and talon. They are cheap too, can find a decent one for around 3 grand now
Oh.. the Talon adn Eclipse are exactly the same thing, just very slightly different body styles. the Engine (4g63T) is identical. The only difference is the valve cover.(sorry I keep editing, just once people start talking about the eclipe/talon, I start rambling.)

all i gotta say is for every cylinder you got take 1 inch off teh penis
but if ya going AWD/4WD its probably so you can use it for somthing. in which case 4 cyl. and 8 cyl. are not much diff. can get some bitchin 4 cyl torque kings, jsut wont go up to 150mph like them big ego trucks do
but i like speed as well go for the big boys.

NO recalls on the Talons anymore, there were some but its been so long ago they should have been taken in to recall already by the previous owner.
I would look for a 1990-1991 eclipse/talon. The motors are 6 bolt. the 93-99 motors are all 7bolt motors which have been prone to crankwalk... AKA- blown motor. the 6 bolt motors have almost no history of crankwalk.
I didnt really have too much trouble with mine... I DID blow my engine, but that was my fault. I did not do enough research before i started modifying the car. So, if you get one, and want to modify it, do ALOT of research, there is SO MUCH information online about it. AWD transmissions have a history to break. the FWD transmissions are solid- and rarely go bad. Now if you do some research on these cars, you will commonly hear the words "lifter tick" This is a rapid ticking sound that comes from the top of the engine while it is idling. It is nothing to worry about, just some find it annoying.
If you buy one, make sure the timing belt has been changed on time, along with other normal operating maintence. If the oil hasnt been changed normally at 3000 miles everytime, dont buy it. The turbo suffers alot when it is run with old oil.
Most importantly. If you choose to go with a DSM ( Diamond Star motorsports, this is the short name for eclipse and talon) find one that was owned by an adult, if you buy it from a teen, or someone young, your likely to buy one that has been ragged out.
These engines, the 4g63 turbo 4 cylinder like to treat you how you treat it. If you abuse the engine, it will fail on you. If you take car of it, it will treat you well.
--Ex: when i bought mine, i bought from a 50 yr old man who bought it in 1990 brand new. Not a single problem with it at all! but I jumped the gun and raised the boost on it without adding proper supporting modifications such as bugger fuel pump and bigger injectors. In the long run, I melted a piston.
Good Luck and I hope you go this route, i'm glad i did, but i wrecked mine. They are awsome cars to drive.
Oh yea- If the car has alot of miles, besure the headgasket has been changed. If it is the original head gasket with 150k plus miles and it takes a crap on you, you gotta pull off the Head to replace it and auto mechanics charge big bucks for that just like they would any other car.
Happy car shopping
Here is a picture of how well taken car of mine was BEFORE the wreck. You can see how perfect the paint was, it was original!

Back to the Mini Cooper, I bet alot of you guys in here hate that car, but now i find myself fascinated by it. So small, so very very small, I love it.

Oh I really love the original Cooper. It's fast, economical, and nimble.. but you're going to have a bitch of a time maintaining it.

Because it's 30+ years old and it's European. Parts will be hard to find and everything in it that hasn't already been replaced will probably need to be soon.

I thought there were updated versions though? Like some were made in the 80s also. I wouldnt mind getting a supercharged 2003 sport with a 6 speed tranny. If I can land a 40+ hour a week well paying job with my current boss next spring.....I'll be allllllll set for a mini.

Hrm well there certainly aren't any from that era in the USA. Yeh, go finance the new one if you get that job. They kick ass.

a bicycle.
Much better form of transportation than any of those you listed. You get healthy, its fun, its waaaaaaay cheaper to buy and maintain and you look way more fuckin cool biking in the middle of winter than wimping out and driving.

I'll have to give biking in a -15 degree windchill a chance sometime , I bet it's much more thrilling than going 120+ on an empty highway.....well, empty 'til I meet the back end of a truck

Fair enough, I guess most winters are harsher than the one out here in Vancouver, but for the rest of the year bikes are the only way to go. A bus pass is nice when the weather is really bad.

If I lived in a large city, a bike would be key, but, I live 22 miles from school and my work is about 65-70 miles away. It's sad I dont live in a city really; walking/biking all those extra miles would really help right now.

not all of us have teh excellent bus service vancouver does either lets face it, bc city life has it all....:)
geo metros are good, but keep in mind its a suzuki car...which is why its good. gm could never make somthing that good if their lives depended on it
v6 golfs? i liek em, nto the greatest. i got piss poor mileage on it but i drove stupid. i dont liek diesels so i would want a gas vw personally...and im not sure how their gas and diesel engines comapre in fuel economy...assuming its not much, but?

the v6 golf gets about 23 mpg while the diesels get in the mid 40's. the only problem is the diesels pump out only 90 horsepower
you guessed it, my focus has switched yet again. now i'm looking at late 80s toyota supras and mr2's. boy, it's gonna be a fucked up day when i finally have to choose a car.....

thats a BIG diff.....one of my cousins or somthing has a westfalia and it gets 30 mpg on gas.....i think i would pass on a golf knowing that. Jettas are suppose to be good. everyone i know that has one loves it! they are all diesels though, no idea what the gas ones are like.
ps the escort i was talkign so highly of.....if you go over about 100 kph it starts gettting lowsy mileage. going 140+ regularly i get about 25, staying under 130 i got about 30. between 100 and 130 it was anywhere from 30-40mpg. what a pissy little car.

I'm not a fan of body kits, I'd rather put that $ into a supercharger/turbocharger, cool air intake, headers, custom exhaust, etc. I guess the only thing I would do to the exterior is put on a new spoiler, but even that isn't top priority.
My dad used to have a mid 80s nissan truck, damn I love small trucks...

ya those trucks are GREAT little things!
escorts are cheap to to sup up compared to lots. you can get those things FAST, they are even starting to come in first at races. check out erdt if your into it. im personally not into doing speed mods, im off road too much.

early to mid 90's rx7's are very cool. when you soup them up they can be very fast...but they are very expensive to get worked on, and arent the most reliable cars.

ya well teh hybrid car craze is bullshit. little firefly/sprints get teh same milegae and they are full gas. see they still added the huge engines and masive power. true its better mileage than their counterparts. but i dotn call them green cars, not by a long shot. there are some excellent electric cars, especially by jap manufactureres (nissan namely) that make good cars that compare to gas ones that are fully electric. i worked out pricing and it would cost about $10 to go the same distance it costs $35 in my 40 mpg car now.
anyway i dont think he is really aimed at this area of car.

Get a SHO taurus. They look like a regular taurus but they have 220 hp yamaha engines. I used to have one and the only races i lost were to cars way out of my league (3000gt vr4 and a 71 nova454 ).On a dyno i had around 192fwhp and 0-60 in 6.89 sec. not bad for a 92 taurus

Hey, I should just shoot for a Lincoln Town Car while I'm at it ....I'm looking more for something under 2500 pounds. Currently, I'm fixated on a supercharged '89 MR2. I think they get around a combined average of 26 mpg and I'm in love with the body style. They don't pump out a ton of horsepower (roughly 145) but, hell, I cant argue with its style and halfway decent gas consumption. Damn I love the '80s!

Now its 2 days later and I have a big choice coming up: I can buy a blue 1990 miata for 1700 or stick to a Gold 1994 V6 Mazda MX-6 with a bunch of mods. for $2k. I'm leaning towards the MX6 because 1. It's FWD 2. It has close to 200 HP 3. It can fit four people 4. I would be getting it below book value where I would be paying above book value for the miata. I will go totally crazy if I get a new car within the next 5 days....
