North Cascade hike and mushroom finds!
    #3071865 - 08/31/04 01:57 AM (8 years, 8 months ago)

This past weekend Psilygirl and I went on a 20 mile backpacking trip in the Northern Cascades... luckily for our mushroom hunting it has been raining in the PNW for the past week and continued while we were  there... not so lucky for our us... we ended up hiking back a day early because it was pretty miserable hiking conditions.

Here are some pics from our hike, we were unsure of one ID and would love some suggestions!

Here's Psily hiking

Crazy trees in the mist!

Some coral fungi:

Psily with some of the many Russula's we stumbled across:

Here's some Ganoderma Tsugae we found:

This is the species of mushroom we are stumped on.  It was growing in beautifully healthy large clusters on forest floors.  We couldn't take a spore print in the rainy woods, but we did note that the gills did not secrete a milky fluid when squeezed, didn't seem to bruise, and smelled like play-doh

We also found red-capped butter boletes (Boletus regius), and some cup fungi,  but forgot to take pictures of them.

All in all it was a great trip!

Peace

BEAUTIFUL!! There's nothing like a hike through misty mountains. I thoroughly enjoyed hiking through the wet, rainy, chilly pyrenees; much better than arid regions and high temperatures.
You have no idea how jealous I am of you, @cro!!

Oh, I think your photos capture the ambiance pretty well!

Lucky is all I can say.

good stuff man

I'm not sure about the un-ID'd one, maybe take a look at Lyophyllum decastes and the rest of the genus though, just a wild guess and I've never found them myself, but they seem to fit the bill. I thought Armillaria at first, but those should have an annulus I believe.

yeah, mushrooms demystified denotes it as a species complex, so there is a lot of variability among them. the description of the cap color includes yellowish-brown to watery tan and paler though.

I agree with the Lyophyllum guess. Another feature you can use to help confirm Lyophyllum is that the cap suface almost always has a greasy feel.

Great photos!

Happy mushrooming!

i think it did have a greasy feel, but it was raining so its hard to tell if everything was just soaked or if it had a greasy feel.

thanks for the ideas, guys!

The caps on those mystery mushrooms look a lot like Lypholiums that I've harvested...but the stems look a lot chubbier than I remember.

I do remember that they are sure group dwellers...BUT...they have a look alike that likes to hang in groups nearby. Sheesh...by brain is shot. Can't remember the name of them.

At any rate, They remind me of a Gomphidius sort of creature from the underside. Hard to tell.

Psilly...I'm an East Coasta as well...transplanted many years ago. About a carbon copy of the route you took but a number of years earlier. Back when Seattleites still walked around with Vibrum soled boots and backpacks.

Jersey girl myself...although my father was born and raised in NYC. I also lived for a period in upstate.

Wonderful shots! Great day to be in the mountains!
