why doesnt anyone like hippies? the more i learn about the culture, it amazes me that more people arent hippies. they are so nice and loving and excepting, so why do so many people hate them? its amazing how one movement changed so many things...
oh man, if i could live in the 60s  !
the reason why i bring this up is i was talking with this therapist sort of person (long story) and i told him about taking mushrooms and he totally understood (i think he was a hippie, but never did shrooms) what i was talking about. and its just so awesome that hippies understand that sort of thing totally. i hate to go on and on, but im just so in love with hippie ideas and i mean i dont even listen to jam bands or w/e that much. just think if everyone were a hippie!
idk...some of you guys have had to be this excited about those ideas sometime in your life!

Embrace today the 60's are long over. Be here now and be happy about it. I like the rainbows, they are really good people, the show 'hippies' on the other hand.. well I don't have anything to say about them.

hippies are extremists as a group just like any other group in theri viewpoints, and refusal to believe other viewpoints. Its just another group of people.

Hippies just a stupid media term used to stereotype people, it means nothing. That group that gets called that has punks, country boys, city kids, gutter punks, all kinds of people. Lame ass labels, it's all people and were all in this together.

The world as we know it, careening down a path of capitalism, self-involvement, and self-destruction, is somewhat of an unstoppable machine. For now, hopefully, but not always. The entire hippie movement was amazing because it was just an awesome divergence from the path that writers like Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essays on The American Scholar and The Poet, saw America treading down - a world where everyone, as Marx also saw, becomes a cog. Hippies embraced the Emersonian, transcendentalist idea of celebrating the self as a way of celebrating all of humanity, they really had it right.
But the machine is strong, and the machine is in charge, which is too bad.
What is also bad, is to try to hold on to these antiquated hippie ideals in today's world - everything must change with the times, and everything must be updated. Yes, the Rainbow people understood exactly what life was all about, and yes, what they were doing was amazing, and put so much, so much good karma in the world, but we can't sit here being like "wow...they were right...let's do it all over again." The world will need a new kind of hippie revolution - the machine has sewn the seeds of skepticism by turning stereotypical images of the sixties and seventies into cliches and gimmicks for the purposes of selling all their useless things. This is M and M candy's "Groovy summer" - M and M's have psychedelic packaging and coloring...this has nothing to do with peace and love, it's a candy reinventing itself with an image people are familiar with for the purposes of increasing sales. We need something new. It won't be created by anyone either, it will happen. It is happening. Here. The internet, while also a way for the machine to spread itself into every household, lets all of us who feel we've been touched by that good hippie karma left over from all those years ago, to become networked with one another. So all in all...hippies are cool, BUT

Hippies that term just needs to go away. Everything needs a stereotypical name so you can market products to them. I am not even sure if in the 60's hippies ever called themselves that or the establishment. The term is silly now, but the spirit still lives.

My friends are heads. dead heads, phish heads, shroom heads, pot heads, all just heads to me.

I like that term 'head'. Hippie fucking annoys the piss out of me sometime unless it's friends calling each other that cause of some wierd ass shit they are pulling. My family calls me that and disregards everything I do, ahh wierd little hippie kid. yup that describes me perfectly, now you know everything about me.

I like fashion in certain ways. For Instance girls who make their own clothes are sexy. I just don't think you should buy your culture out of a store. That's lame.

I'm down with the whole peace and love thing, but hippies tend to be too idealistic about it, so they aren't too grounded in reality. Plus their music sucks(see Greatful Dead for examples).

Anyway, there are no hippes, you would have to be roughly 60 years old to be an actual hippy.
What do you call someone who busts there ass at work 6 days a week, loves music of every genera/form and partakes in the chemical alteration of mind, maaaaannnn?
Who cares.

I usually go chug one sitting at a bus stop, but hidden inside my backpack, and chug it, it makes it look like I am just waiting for the bus...but not always, I usually chuh here listening to tunes..

i was just calling them hippies to refer to the movement...what else would i have called it and have had you guys understood what i meant?
i dont think its a deragatory term at all, a lot of my friends call themselves hippies, who cares? i guess it does classify a certain people, but what DOESNT these days...black, white, smart, stupid, punks, goths, posers, stoners...every group has a name and always will.

The hippie motto used to be, Hey man I wanna live off the earth man. Who needs a job, man, I wanna live off the land, man. Let's backpack across Europe, man. Comercialism sucks, man. However, almost 40 years later all those hippies turned into fat capitalistic money whoring pigs. What would the world be without hippies?
BTW, coincidently my avatar was a sign I saw while visiting my daughter at FSU, when I took the picture a hippie stopped and yelled at me "what the fuck is wrong with hippies?" I guess he didn't see the humor in the sign.
