There needs to be.
1) It would help with the space issue.
2) If an account were compromised, there's a nice little link now near Logout that'll give them instant access to anything uploaded.

If it's a security issue it wouldn't be too hard for say, a user to be able to 'mark this pic for deletion', and then an admin to actually delete the pics, maybe in batches.

We should get two default folders, "home" and "trash".
Admins can then go to a user's trash folder and delete them manually, or all the trash folders could be emptied automatically every 7 days or something.
You guys bitch about space, imagine how many useless pics could be deleted?
Personally, I don't like having incriminating pics laying around.

nah the shroomery people seem to delete my pictures anyway without any notice - they can delete them for us, guys, and they DO!
a couple of my favorite pics that I didn't save anywhere else are GONE, so yes there's a way to delete them
all that's left is my thumbnails for several of my pics

Just wanted to point out that the reason your thumbnails are visible but the original images are not, is due to some sort of corruption that ocurred over a 1-3 month period sometime in 2003. We didn't manually single out or delete these pictures, they just got fucked up in the middle of an upgrade or something - everyone who uploaded pictures during this time experienced the problem 
Also pictures themselves, while they do take up extra physical space, they are not slowing down processing speed with respect to how our database functions and that is our primary concern when we speak of "saving space".

ok, no one is worried about server space then, it's security. One of the two reasons for deleting all those PMs. Why can't the same be done for pics? The main reason given against this in the past was an issue with the users having delete access. As I said, the admins can call the delete function, and have it work on pics people have marked for removal.

I have to concur that security is quite the issue and that the administration has openly acted in favor of security by deciding to delete user's PMs despite how they may feel about it. I don't quite understand why the administration has yet to make any steps in favor of security concerning pictures which has been a concern loudly vocalised by many users for a very long time.
In the mean time one would be wise to not post any "incriminating" pics as all users should be aware that they will not be deleted.

How about a prominent message on the pic upload page that says
"Warning! Uploaded pics will never be deleted, do not submit images that you may want to remove at some point in the future"

As a rule of thumb, you should never post or upload anything in the internet that you feel is is incriminating.
Now, if you did nevertheless, and you absolutely want the images to be removed, PM me the link to the pictures you want to be removed, and I will see if your concerns are valid.

There have been some ideas presented that have merit, and may be possible. However, it will involve custom scripting, and have to be maintainable across board upgrades, and also be secure since it would involve the deletion of physical files on the server, and not simply database records.
We do understand your concerns, and we will discuss it and see what we can do. However, I will give you neither a yes or no answer, nor a timetable at this time. Suffice it to say, that you have voiced your concerns in this matter, and that we'll see what can be done about it at some point in the future.

Yeah, this would be really nifty since I somehow got my last couple uploaded pics double-posted, essentially. I'm sure I didn't hit the button twice, but the last two pics I uploaded are in My Pictures twice. Really annoying. Deletion=key.

I think it has more to do with giving the people the ability to delete files...and more importantly - how to restrict that capability to just pictures (cause someone could cause a lot of problems if they stumbled into an area they're not supposed to be able to get into to, and they decided to remove some shit that seems unneccessary - just for shits an grin - and wind up fucking up all sorts of stuff for the admins)

yeah I have coded some shit in PHP and have idea of the risk but a good scripter should be able to make the code safe. The shroomery is quite a website - not the forums, the website itself - in php |I think so, if some other language - they can write the delete pic script in that one|, so I guess the administrators have the knowledge to do this.
edit: also, they dont say thats the problem or something, they just remain passive and tell us its considered for the future.

dude if someone's privacy is endangered or just wants to get rid of some pic, its more important than a frigging red X. I doubt everyone will go crazy deleting their pics if they could. Sorry for bitching but Im a big activist for that option cause its bugging me, and as I can see other people.

it's easy enough to get rid of incriminating pics though - just put em all in a folder labeled please_delete (or something of that nature) and pop off a PM to an admin about having em removed

if there are photos that you feel you may want deleted in the future fo any reason you should have them hosted by another site... I have about 40 pics hosted on photobucket (none incriminating)... it's not the wisest idea to have a drug related website hosting incriminating photos unless you have a wipe system setup on your computer that would prevent them from finding whats there that would lead them here...

Hello again,
I just wanted to let you all know that the admins now have a custom script to access user picture galleries and delete specified images.
However, let me make clear from the get go that we will be extremely discerning in which images we delete and if you don't have a legitimate reason for deleting said images, we will not comply (i.e. if you just don't want a picture in your gallery anymore, that's not a good enough reason).
Now, if you have legitimate concerns which revolve around protecting your own person, then feel free to move said images into a new folder titled something along the lines of "delete please" and then PM an administrator with your request & reason. We will take care of the rest.

well there is some improvement for the admins to delete pics
but shall we await one for the normal users?
and why the fruit do you have to review every pic that gets deleted, just curious. Overgrow, for example, dont control their folks this way.

Not until we start running low on hard drive space

This is still under discussion. There are two main issues at hand. (1) We originally planned on including deletion with an expanded image management system as an incentive for people to contribute for shroomery supporter account. This system also allows users to share their private galleries/images of choosing. (2) Since before supporter accounts were even in the picture the administration has been weary of allowing users to delete their pics because of the not so suprising large amount of paranoia that transpires here resulting in many members requesting their pics/posts/accounts deleted and then realizing a day later that they were a) sad their entire shroomery history has been wiped forever, or b) glad we gave them a chance to reconsider and we end up not having to put gaps in threads or execute what may be a rash decision.
I realize there are many pro arguments as well for making the feature public, so just give us some more time to think about it and we'll get back to you. For now though, if it is a matter of absolute urgent concern, just feel free to PM an admin to blast those pics.
