lighting help for coir tek please:)
    #16653974 - 08/06/12 04:36 PM (9 months, 10 days ago)

I am doing this tek here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11916595#11916595

At the end it tells to add light and FAE, but how do you add light to a dark tub? would you run a light into the actual monotub?

Would it be possible to do this tek with a clear tub?

How often would you spray to keep the humidity up for a large monotub like this one, around 66quarts?

I'm sorry I sound like such a noob, just trying to get things squared away.  My WBS jars are almost fully colonized!

Thanks so much!

cut a hole in the lid and cover with saran wrap and clear tape....let light in thru the top

for the first flush, misting shouldnt be needed...it has all the moisture it needs in the substrate...just adjust the plyfil

alright I can do that,Thanks!!! but I also have clear tubs that would be easier to use, but damion uses a blue tub.  Should I use that blue one or a clear tub?

clear tub lets more light in.. a dark tub would only be needed during colonization.

Alright, so for colonization, could I use a clear tub, put a black bag around it (to keep contams out) while it is colonizing for 10 days, and then tak off the bag and introduce natural lighting? Because I have a completely clear tub I bought from walmart that is 66 quarts.

Thanks everyone for all your help!

Also just double checking: No misting is necessary for a coir bulk tek during the first flush?  I guess I just figured I would need to because I'm so used to pf tek

its a preference thing, if doing a monotub u are spawning in open air...if contams want in they are gonna get in then....not while its colonizing....the bag will help keep the moisture in the tub but a lot of people dont even do that...they just tape up the holes and let the imperfect lid provide GE(gas exchange)... if it was me i would use a white garbage bag not a black one...but if it was me i wouldnt use a bag at all.

alright so just keep the holes taped up until ready for colonization? then take them off and go?

Here's my thought process: Wait until jars finish colonizing, finish up the coir tek--all that good stuff.  Then take the tub set aside for about 10 days or until it look sfully colonized with the holes taped up.  Then after 10 days take off the tape and wait for the first flush to fruit?  Is all that correct?  Also I wasn't planning on casing, would I lose a ton of mushies if I don't?

Casing is only used in situations where you cannot provide it with the conditions required for fruiting. A monotub provides great fruiting conditions when built per the Tek. I think a big misconception people has is that it's a set amount of time you have to wait until you fruit. Just wait until you see pins forming and then wait one more day even then fruit that bitch.

If no pins develop and the substrate appears 100% colonized then you're good to go on putting it into fruiting conditions but more times than not it will pin and show you that's it's ready.

Make sure you follow the Tek's exactly as described unless it's something older like the elementary coir tek where there was still misinformation going around that you want 100% darkness during colonization. Also be sure to even distribute your grains through your bulk substrate that you're spawning to. If you don't colonization times will definitely go up.

As it has already been mentioned mycelium benefits from circadian rhythm during all stages of growth.

Op...if u have a clear tub by all means use it, that would be better

light during the colonization period may trigger early fruiting. therefore not letting your substrate colonize completely

FALSE, do some research.

Direct intense lighting yes, but it's already been specifically mentioned that indirect lighting is beyond beneficial to colonizing mycelium.

No one here is advocating direct light.

ive done plenty of research.. and since light is one of the fruiting triggers id prefer to not risk early pinning.

Light is one of the pinning triggers but by far the least important. FAE and evaporation of water on the surface of your substrate are #1 and 2. You're only slowing down your colonization time by not exposing your jars/bulk subs to ambient lighting on a 12/12 cycle.

RR has specifically mentioned that all of his colonizing substrates get ambient lighting from a window on his commercial mushroom farm.

There is no discussion for it anymore really, at this point it's just a fact that isn't well known yet. That's the only reason I'm informing you of all of these things.

Keeping your colonizing anything in the dark is old outdated info and needs to be put to rest for good.

ok well thanks for the advice.. i was just trying to be safe but im going to try a little bit of light during colonization on my next tub and see how that goes.

I can only highly recommend it after seeing for myself the increased colonization speeds even while using MS. I've only worked with an isolate once and I should of done a side by side comparison and posted it up but that was the least of my worries at the time.

Even if it's just exposing a room to light from outside it is extremely beneficial but I use a 6500k spectrum light on a 12/12 cycle about 4-5 feet from where my jars and bulk tubs colonize.

fae is the main fruiting trigger. keep the co2 levels high and light is irrelevent, imo.

One more question! Does the amount of spawn have to be exact? because I think I have around 6 quarts of spawn averaged out rather then 5.  Would I need to alter the amount of verm and coir?  Thanks!

Yeah just add the extra qt.

If you look at my MAZ. grow log you'll see that my substrate wasn't 100% and theres knots EVERYWHERE.

I now let my tub's sit in the dark now for 3 days and then I put it into 12/12 light cycle.

It colonized and fruited in 15 day's. It needed at least another 3-5 days.

the more spawn you have, the more inoculation points there will be and the quicker the colonization period.

its better to colonize in 1 week than 2, the substrate is waiting for something to colonized it,mycellium or contams...its like a race
