Liberty caps UK 2012 * 1
    #16371580 - 06/12/12 05:35 PM (10 months, 29 days ago)

Today I saw my first liberty cap of 2012. Single cap on a well drained, slightly raised part of a north east facing slope, at an altitude of 1100 feet. This was after a week of cool, wet weather following a warm spell.
Summer finds are common here in north Wales, but this early is exceptional in my experience.
Has anyone else seen any yet?

I havn't seen any lately, a few weeks ago when it was raining for a fornight non-stop I found hundreds of the look-a-likes, you get some really look-a-likes that when I was walking with my brother who is egar to find some actives did not no the difference. The colours are all the same, but there is some strange 6th sense in mushroom picking that can detect look-a-likes from the real ones.

I know you want pictures, but sorry I'm useless at that sort of stuff. I did take a picture on my phone but it wasn't very good. I would like with hindsight to have taken a picture of it with the bluebells that were growing within a mile of it to really give authenticity to it being a late spring find.
No mistaking what I saw though, I've been finding them for over 30 years and this was clearly a mature liberty cap.
By the way, I returned to the same hillside today, and within a few metres of where I saw the specimen last week, there was a cluster of 4 pins. Again I'm 100% certain of their identity. I didn't take any photos this time, but will try to return in the next few days and try to get a picture.

well without a pic its horseshit to think you should get to start an official thread for the year!! it bugs me people are so fuckin desperate to get to make threads like that and have their name set in stone for the season. sorry to be an ass but thats just the way it has to be. no pics no official thread.

:whathesaid:

Edit: You should somehow get a camera and head back where
you saw those pins, if they're already visible they should mature
quite fast. If indeed you have picked libs for the last 30 years I'd
reckon it would be quite hard for you to go wrong on the id.
Now I'm so eager to see this so... you said 'A', so you have to say 'B'!

Not liberty caps, looks like a mixed collection of Panaeolus and
Panaeolina sp., possibly also Agrocybe. Take some prints if
you need a more accurate id.

(On a side note, we are still waiting for the OP to dig up photos,
so until then this thread probably should be regarded as a sleeper,
despite the tantalizing title.)

Hard to tell, I'm not at all  confident with this genus but if I have
to say something I'd say it resembles Panaeolus acuminatus. It
would however probably turn out to be P. papilionaceus.

I might be all wrong though, try and print it and see wether it
turns out jet black or darkish brown. Could be Panaeolina sp.

It's a Panaeolus, likely papilionaceus. Inactive.
None active in first mixed collection.

Not in the UK myself but you should be looking for Panaeolus cinctulus.

Didn't manage to get back to take photos of the pins I saw last week, but have managed to get the picture of the single cap I found on 12th June to my computer.
Also found a fresh cluster today, in the same area, which I took photos of too, which I'll try to put up soon.

Which county did you find them in?
I might have to go for a walk this weekend.

I found them in Montgomeryshire, but see no reason why there shouldn't be some out elsewhere at altitude. I usually find the first caps of the year over 1000feet, and more often than not on land that has been disturbed in the very distant past, places like where old buildings have been, small quarries etc. I suspect that factors like changes in aspect, slope, drainage and soil depth allow tiny areas to become ready for fruiting a few weeks earlier than the surroundings, but this is just my guess. The majority of my early season finds are on north or north east facing hillsides, but I do know a south west facing meadow that for some reason often produces in July if conditions are right.
It's so good to be out in the hills at this time of year, finding anything is just a bonus.

The mushrooms are still on the hillside where I photographed them, so I can't provide real proof that I took those photos this year.
If conditions hold, and the weather forecast is promising, I will try to get a photo with a newspaper with the date showing. This isn't likely to happen before the middle of next week though, as that's the next time I'm likely to be passing that way with time to stop.
Hopefully someone else will find some and post here, as conditions seem good to me, and I can't believe there aren't many other places in the mountains where there are a few caps showing.

Awesome, I always get this bubbly, exited feeling when people
find shrooms -in the uk- early in the season. Or is it even the
season? I don't know, but I get exited anyway. Maybe this weekend
I'll have a look around my spots, hopefully take a few pics if I
find any.

Gut gemacht!

I haven't done any lib searching recently- it's been way too hot, we've been having quite a few thunderstorms here as well, I may go out at some point to see what I can find...but I still have all of last years supply left- I didn't even sample one...

Congratulations, Fux, this is great! You really had a short break
between 2011 and 2012 seasons.

You should definitely create a solo thread if you're going same
length of time as last year! :mushroom2:

yeah just 6 months break this is strange, but this isn´t everywhere in germany, i think you should give your spots a short look, if the weather is also so muddy in your area :awesomenod:

i already started a thread for 2012, so i hope this will get as nice as the last one

I can't believe there's libs out now, I'm going to plan a hunt in Wales in a week or so, somewhere high up. I'll be sure to take my camera though.

Got out again today for another look. There were still a few caps so I took a couple of pictures. This time with a paper showing the date.
Also yesterday found my first boletes this year.

The liberty caps were at 1100 feet, on a raised, well drained part of a north east facing slope. This spot, along with one other I know, produces each year in late June or early July if conditions are right.
The boletes were at 800 feet, close to silver birch trees. Again this spot is reliable at around the same time if it has been wet and not too hot.

Anyone have much <censored> with Panaeolus cinctulus so far this year?

Hunting forum rule:

4. Do not ask about current finds in your area.
These posts have been flooding the forum for years. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for and its been raining, you just might find some.

Thanks fux234 and fingers crossed that today is productive for you.
I see you have already found some there. Well done.
I had an interesting conversation yesterday with a guy I know who used to pick for years, but has given up recently. His job was working outside and he had access to good areas. He reckoned that he has found liberty caps at all times of the year and that microclimate is the main influence. I can see his point but also feel that microhabitat is crucial, particularly at the very start and end of the season. I think this is the reason that certain very small areas keep producing each year several weeks before there is ore widespread fruiting.

Awesome, iv bin waiting for the libs to start appearing, I drove past a perfect field on my way to a job this morning and could have sworn I saw a few, I couldn't get out and check but I slowed down enough to be pretty sure it was them. That's what spurred me to look on shroomery and lo and behold they are out in places. I'm definately going to check later on. It's nice they are out but it does show we have had a shitty summer so far, at least it makes the vile weather more worthwhile...

I went out yesterday to my best spots, i only found two libs, and they were quite small but its exiting knowing that the season is just around the corner.

it was also very wet and rainy when i went out, would you guys recommend going out when there's been some sun?

and im curious, is it possible to over pick an area? would picking shrooms early affect how many there will be later in the year?

I believe overpicking might show its effect the next season, and not
within the current one. Usually the best places fruit massive loads
continually during peak season - I can pick a motherload and
be back two or three days later getting a similar harvest.

Best thing to do is to always search for new spots. Finding "El dorado"
one year doesn't necessarily mean it will be there the next - I have
seen areas that were thick with libs one year but then virtually empty
the next.

I'm curious what actually causes a decreasing number of fruits from
one season to another. Could the remains of the rotting fruits in a field
be beneficial for further growth, and thus a colony be endangered
if there are fewer decomposing fruits due to harvesting?

yeah you also should left rotten ones or pick em to make a solution,
and spray it, to secure the spots a bit.
Also cut the stems away instead of pulling them out the ground with
mycelia, i observed it and the myc grows out fast if you left them in
the right spot.

i lurked a bit over my fields but i found nothing than this first cluster,
where i left some little pins last sunday and observed them over the week,
till they got to dry so i had to pick them, there even came some more so i
got one decent trip out this cluster  pics will follow later iam
a bit lazy with updates atm

I'm aching for a trip out to the higher altitudes myself, but have been
extremely busy working lately. The excitement of seeing these finds in
Germany and UK has given me dreams of big fat libs more than one night
the last week! The city I live in is now more or less covered with Pan foes,
more than usual, so I'm hoping for a fungal bonanza when the season
finally hits Norway.

Good news on the finds, as some one mentioned via PM I picked Liberty Caps on 01 January this year, I should have started the thread ! I am gonna post less and read more this year. With my existing spots I know I can collect approx 800-1,000 if need be. However, my game plan for the year is quality and not quantity. I think I will aim for 200 leaving a lot of shrooms for everyone else to find and more spore release overall : )

I am going to try and pick in the cleanest possible areas and only take the best specimins I can find. I am going to wait until at least end of August before I consciously venture out. I do look forwards to it, cold hands, p*ssing down with rain, weatherproofs on, cups of hot tea when you get in, loverly.

Of course eagle eyes will be checking when on days out.

Enjoy the fun of looking everyone.

Went out for another look today. There were a few liberty caps around, I guess I saw around 20, all mature caps, I didn't see any pins. All were on or close to the top of raised areas, presumably for better drainage in generally soaking conditions. All were either singles or in groups of two or three, unlike last week when I found a cluster of around ten.
I've walked in another couple of areas that sometimes produce early in the season, but haven't seen any elsewhere yet.
I'm pleased to hear there have been others seen elsewhere in the uk now. Conditions still look good here for some more early season finds.

Psilocypher, I can't believe I didn't notice the trip headline in the Mirror when i took that photo!

i don´t found as much as you but i made the same experience, they just grow in those special spots which are well drainaged, good soaked and where the light and shadows are changing frequently and then just single or in small groups, but its still pretty early

Took a long walk in a different area of the same range of hills that I've recently been finding liberty caps. I found another area with a few caps. This time on a very steep south facing slope at an altitude of around 900 feet. Guess I saw around 6 or so, plus a few that were decayed. I've never found any there at this time of year before, but in all honesty can never remember looking there early in the season. I will certainly look there again next year, in case it turns out to be another special spot.
Apart from in this one small area I only saw one other liberty cap in around 5 miles of walking.
If the cool, wet weather continues I'm sure they will keep popping up, and hopefully become a bit more widespread in a couple of weeks.
Then again the sun might come out and bring us some summer. Either way is a winner.

An update on the week or so since I last posted.
I've been out looking a couple of times, and found one or two caps in the places I'd previously found them.
I've also started finding a few in other spots, including on a completely different range of hills. The numbers are still low, but conditions have been awful for spotting them, very wet and quite windy too.
Most I've found have been over 1000feet altitude. Most have been single caps, but I have found two clusters, one of 3 and one of 9.
The weather here has warmed up a little over the last few days, maybe this is helping them to come up in a few more places.
A bit of sunshine would help, and hopefully bring on the bilberries too.

Ok im reading that people are actually finding liberty caps in this hot weather but I also read that you need rain, I'm new at this and wanted to pick up some (for the first time) in the south, Somerset, but the caps being under the sun drying for several hours, will it change its properties?....thanks

no.

the people that are finding them are at higher alts and wet periods. i really really doubt youll find them "down south" where its 20+celsius

They will tolerate the odd hot day, so long as the ground is wet and the nights are cool enough. What daz01 said about finding them at altitude and during wet periods is right in my experience. Micro habitat and geology seems important too.
Here I expect to find them from the end of June onwards, when conditions are right, with numbers of caps and locations increasing as the summer progresses. This year is the fourth consecutive wet summer with cool periods, and it's the fourth consecutive year I've seen caps out in June.
Nothing out at the moment. There were a few dried caps out a few days ago. I'm sure this hot weather will help the development in the soil, and I'm really hopeful for the next cooler, wet spell.

The weather has been rather shitty recently, wet and now chilly so I'm heading up into the peaks today to have my first proper lib hunt this year...I keep dreaming that I'm finding them in new places...weird.

I don't want to collect them, I'm just looking for good pictures really.

I'm going to look in a couple of weeks (Southern Ireland).
Weather's been cool (15C now) and lots of rain.

Will def. report back.

I used to pick libertys in california years ago..You have so many green grassy sheep fields in Wales, UK, Scotland, all over..I could spend the whole season just roaming around if I had the means to do it...hehe

If you are to go looking make sure you check high altitudes that have had plenty of wet weather.

Too early if it's low down. But there's no harm in checking a high up spot that you've known to fruit in the past.

Let us know how you get on, and remember if you find anything post as much information as you can (not the location, but general habitat) and lots of pics. The Shroomery loves pics.

You're welcome to come stay with me if you help me find some Libs! Does that constitute "means", haha? Where I live I'm completely surrounded by grassy cow/sheep fields. Not much in the way of elevation though.

Does the heat which makes the Liberty Cap season start later in the low-South also make it finish later? Is the season roughly the same length in these areas just shifted, or does the South have noticeably shorter seasons?

Thats a good question. Not sure if the season is longer up north but I would say it has the potential to be especially including elevated land of which there is more in northern UK. (earlier start)

In my limited experience down south it depends somewhat, when temps first go to 7C overnight you can be pretty sure given rainfall they are out usually in small numbers at first.

Also very much weather dependent and how the season goes with rainfall. It was +24C in the days in october one week last year so it can also be quite sporadic, you get flush 1 and then flush 2 may not be for 2 - 3 weeks if no rain comes and temps remain high.

Best bet is to get out there and enjoy the weather come what may and have a real adventure. I love the picking more than the tripping.

That's a fair point about the elevated land - I used to find in North Wales, the season would start at higher altitudes, and as the season went on, the libs seemed to appear at lower and lower altitudes until they'd be fruiting down at sea level.

Ah good stuff super_mush.

I live down in Cork, haven't hunted ever for mushies but this autumn is going to be my first. Will let you know if I see anything... waiting for the temp to go down a bit.

Let me know how you get on my friend

Legs got a well needed stretch round the local hills in central Scotch-land today!
Not much fungus in general but found a nice little cluster of Libs whilst @ about 500mish.
Would have stayed to hunt some more but the weather closed in fast. The heads fast become indiscernible from sheep-shit when it gets wet

Today wasn't about the result tho Brian, it was all about match-sharpness for the coming season and I thought the boys did well!!!

Hey guys!
I went up as high as I could on a little search today in North Wales and i found these 2 mushrooms... Now I know that these aren't magic, or at least I'm pretty sure they're not... But am I likely to find some libs around the same area I found these in the near future?

almost certainly...and when you find one and bend down to pick it, stay crouched and scout the surrounding areas....very rarely do you just find one lib.

I used to find path edges to be very fruitful...where the grass is slightly longer than that on the trodden path.

Happy Hunting!

I see no reason that they shouldn't be around, but yes - it is too early that far south and at low altitude. Do you have many cow/sheep fields around? That's where you want to be looking, after the nights fall bellow 7 °C until the first frost I'm told.

IME Herts isnt that great. Ive scoured lots of different places around the county. There are spots but few and far between.

I usually take a week off and head up North or to Wales.

Ask some older heads if they know of any spots, it always helps to be pointed in the right direction at first.

Get to know what type of fields/grassland your looking for. And google maps can be pretty helpful IMO.

Good luck

I was considoring going camping for a day or so in whales but its hard to find the time with work. Shame as I love nature and have been camping since I was a wee scout :p

Hey all, new here. Will be my first year properly "hunting"! Been wandering around the sheep/cow fields of the West Midlands (between those two big rivers) for a while and noticed the mushrooms, but never took interest.

Past few days there's been an explosion in mushroom count (in general). The other day I was half way up a steep cow field and I found a single lib-looking-thing poking its head out, I left it and pottered around a bit, but found nothing else. Came back a couple of days later after some mild rain and the farmer had tilled massive chunks of the field! >.<

I've heard from several people that cow fields are less likely to yield, compared to sheep fields, due to the weight of the cows breaking up the mycelium in the soil. Sounds logical to me, anyone got input?

Took a look yesterday and found there were plenty of liberty caps out in a couple of early season spots. They were very localised with other spots having none yet.
Interestingly hardly any other fungi showing at all, I probably saw around 100 libs but less than 20 of all other types.

Not sure if the 'weight of the cows' thing is true, but I've definitely noticed that I find a lot more libs in sheep fields than in cow fields.

Spotted a few pale shrooms growing around my area but none are Libs however it's a sign that the conditions are becoming more suitable for lib hunting  and my bike is on standby for next month so I can cycle up to the mountains for a trip

Good luck, men:thumbup:

Jesus people have started finding them already! Actually I don't really know why I'm suprised, I was saying exactly the same thing on last years version of this thread.

I'm from North East England and went out looking in a reliable spot last week, but didn't find one trace of fungus never mind a lib, havent seen mushrooms of any kind in any of the fields I have walked through. I got the impression it was simply too early in the year. Finding them at this time of the year is only good because you get a good feeling from it, you wouldn't really find a decent number. Suppose finds in Wales are easier to understand, they always seem to pop up the earliest there.

I actually live in Glasgow, aven't been out looking around here yet, i did try round here last year and didnt find one place that gave me any where near a decent number of libs, and just used my local English spots.

Hi, yeah I'm in the west - central belt!

I've never looked for Cyans! I would not have a clue what I was looking for tbh! Luckily enough, I have no such problem with Liberty caps

Ah cool giesyerjaicket, I've never even heard it referred to as that before (yes laugh at me I've had my head in the sand, you mean the strip basically from Glasgow to Edinburgh? and you are in the West of that, so near Glasgow?

Ok, so If you just want to send me the post codes for the spots so I can put them in my sat nav, and post a few pics, mark these spots out on a map for me, and label/number them to show which give out the most libs then that would be great! cheers man  cant wait!

I've looked for cyans before in Parks but have found nothing, I know that I could ID them easily, its just I've come across nothing that looks remotely like them yet.

ps cyans should be in glasgow. they have been recorded in edinburgh 50 years ago so that is plenty of time for them to spread!

I know that matey, back home I have numerous liberty cap spots each of which I have picked hundreds from, and even thousands from a couple. My best spot, I haven't been to for a couple years, as me and friends were caught by police leaving the single small field with over 3500 liberty caps and the biggest I have ever seen at that. There seemed to be more libs than blades of grass.

Last year was when I first moved to Glasgow, in July. So when it got to season, I went looking in fields all over the surrounding area, and up past loch lomond, in places that looked sure to fruit libs, but to my amazement, not one! and I was by no means lazy or uneducated in my searching. (edit: Sorry I actually found about 8).

To the guy who posted back about cyans, and the fact that they should be in Glasgow, I do not doubt that they will be, but after reading up on them and looking amongst dead leaves and twigs, rotten undergrowth in many boarders in a few parks in this city (yeah I also know they can grow in grass, if theres rotten leaves etc around), I found nothing. Scotland just doesn't want me to be successful in my psilocybin adventures I think...

Its really ironic, one of the plus points for me before I moved here was me thinking that it would be a haven for libs, and I would be bringing them home by the sack full. I dont doubt that there are amazing places for them, but not for lack of hunting, I am yet to find, and to be honest am pretty disheartened by last years attempts.

EnterTheMoon, do you mind if I ask how the police reacted?
I don't know the likely legal consequences here in Ireland if I get caught, do you think quantities like that would be treated harshly?

I don't want to end up in jail, although I'm prepared to if it comes to it, stupid law..

igCorcaigh, no I don't mind, and if you don't mind I will just tell the story, as it is somehow (although I never thought it would be at the time) an almost fond memory of mine now (almost!!), time has been a great partial healer in this case, and it was 3 years ago this season. The only reason I look at it kind of fondly now is because of the look on the police officers faces when they realised how much of these shrooms we had, and I'm certain they'd never seen them before, probably only heard of "magic mushrooms". That they we're some kind of weird, madness inducing hippy thing from back in the day, and only the strangest of people would want anything to do with them, drop outs, people with only drugs that keep them happy. Not the case, as we know.

It was around lunch time, me and 3 other friends headed half an hour out of Newcastle to the field, this one most amazing field. It is tiny, the guy who owns it has it as a small holding, with "pet" sheep in it. The field is next to his bungalow but he can't see it from his house due to a tall hedge/tree lining. The guy from the bungalow had caught us early one morning before, and asked what we were doing, but we just said we were walking (there is at least a footpath that goes through the hedge I mentioned). Looking back, that first time we should have just told him what we were doing, still I don't believe he would have liked it and let us pick, you just got the impression he was determined to be an arsehole no matter what.

Anyway lunch time we were picking, we were planning on being quick, and compared to previous times we were. We were in and out in an hour (admittedly that was because there were people stood staring at us from the bottome of the field in the end). Anyway, an hour and over 3500 liberty caps! the tallest, fattest caps you have ever seen, and not only that, there just seems to be something about that field that makes the shrooms more potent, 50 big ones from this field can make you feel like you've had 500, the pressure you get on your head when your coming up off 50 is immense, its like a massive amount of G force, like being on a waltzer when it is at its spinning peak, which is pretty intense for just sitting down, I remember the back of my head being glued to a tree trunk once, theyre also extremely visual.

Anyway, the guy in the bungalow, who is middle aged and his family live with him, pretty young kids, obviously spotted us at some point, and him and his family were stood watching us at the bottom of the field in the end, so we decided just to walk straight past them, with greggs bags and crisp packets stuffed to the brim, about to burst with magic mushrooms. We made it to the road where our car was parked, and the guy had obviously alraedy called the police as they pulled up as soon as we opened the car door. They asked what we had been doing, we said walking, they pulled a bag out of one of our pockets, their look was so funny when they saw how many mushrooms were in it. It was a guy cop and a girl cop, the guy said "ok lads you have been stealing vegetables from private property, we can't let you have these" (oh yeah they went down the stealing route with the threats, and I know for a fact this was because he could not identify them as being magic or not, he'd definately never seen them, of course he will have been almost certain they were, why would anyone pick so many of these strange looking shrooms to eat, just for food? I guess it would have involved him taking them away for testing if he wanted to go down the drugs route, I loved the fact that he wanted to go down that route but kind of couldn't though, he looked kind of embarrased, at a loss as what to do really) he emptied the libs onto the road and squished them with his boot so they were mush, he then pulled another bag out of another person pocket and emptied the shrooms out onto the roadside verge, in long grass, he said if we came back to get them we would be arrested, he took all our addresses and said that my friends car was now down on record as being involved in this incident, so the police can see this if they pulled him in future. Anyway, he soon realised what he had found on us was the tip of the iceberg, the bags just kept on coming, in every pocket we had nearly there were libs, and that was before he started searching the car, where we had also thrown a few bags. The vast majority of them were squished into the tar mac, a bag at a time. We were heart broken to say the least, absolutely gutted. A consolation was the fact that when we were sat in the car and he had finished being a dick, ready to go, the girl cop was leaning into the boot of the police car and he brought it down hard on the back of her head, hurting her and embarrasing them both. We were just laughing while they watched us. laughing in their face. Anyway thats the story, sorry that was pretty long as probably not that interesting, but it kinda makes me laugh. and cry :frown:

EDIT: I will just add that me and friends are planning on hitting this field again this year, early in the morning, maybe around 5 oclock just to be as safe as possible. Although, I wouldn't be surprised if that guy had had the field sprayed, and probably on the coppers advice, if the guy didnt know what we had been doing when we were leaving the field, the copper will definately have told him. I so hope its still a haven, they grow so big there, because the grass is so long they fight to get above it, and they do. If I do have success, I will be sure to post photos on here of the pick!

Thanks for the story, 3,500 in an hour is a pretty nice yield! Hope you find some fruitful spots in Glasgow.

yeah we were so miserable for a while after that, we would have been set up for a pretty long time :frown: so we havent been back to the field since, and hence havent really tripped as hard as we did a few years ago, when we picked that place a lot. The places I have to choose from, and have picked since are just not a patch on that bit of land, 500 is an excellent pick even with a few people there, from the places I know other than that one spot. Its a legend.

Went on a pretty big walk/hunt a couple of weeks ago after I was sure I glimpsed some promising looking mushies from the car on my way to work, (i know it sounds ridiculous to see mushrooms in a field from a car but I definately saw the heads of some sort of mushroom after the sun had dried them out, they stand out like little beacons in the right conditions) I couldnt get out and look at the time but when I returned to the field I saw just about every non psilocybin species of mushroom but nothing worth picking other than some standard field mushrooms (which I did pick and put into a omelet with some wild garlic I also found that walk) at least its an indicator of good times to come, I don't think iv seen so many mushrooms this early on before..

The same just happened to me as hungrygoldfish, getting caught in the rain.
Lots of libs out in the hills in Wales near me now. In spite of temperatures over 15 degrees at night, there were hundreds of pins starting to show. should be good in a few days if I can get back out there to look.

If I travelled tomorrow to the campsie fells in the west of Scotland, climbed to a reasonable height and found a decent field, would I have any chance of finding any libs? I've found a good amount in the past few years however I've never went to this particular location.

Thanks for any reply

If I travelled tomorrow to the campsie fells in the west of Scotland, climbed to a reasonable height and found a decent field, would I have any chance of finding any libs? I've found a good amount in the past few years however I've never went to this particular location.

That area is meant to be very good for libs. However, I would leave it at least a week and let the temperature drop a bit.

Thanks for any reply

Ok guys... I went out again today and it was getting dark fast... after about a 10 minute scan i found these baby mushrooms growing, and there were a few more around the area... I just picked a few to take pictures of and maybe you can tell me wether they are libs or not, they look like libs to me :S
Cheers!

Careful with such specific locations, you'll get told off :spank: ... not that I care.

I think it mostly depends on whether or not you can get high enough. And of course you need rain and sheep/cows.

To everyone who's already finding them: What kind of altitudes are they growing at the moment?

Looks like you've got some kind of Coprinoid.

You just need to look at some more pictures of Psilocybe Semilanceata. Also I hear the stem of a Lib should be flexible enough to twist around your little finger without snapping - would have ruled out those flimsy mushies. Don't be embarrassed - keep at it!

Think I'll wait a week or two. How do I figure out what my altitude is for my hills?

On Wikipedia it says that your hills go to a maximum of 578m. If you Google the town you start in, it probably won't be very hard to find its altitude somewhere. For the altitude of a specific field a GPS or Altimeter would be needed. You may have a GPS on your phone although I think a lot of phone GPSs don't do altitude...

... Having said that it wouldn't help much to know the altitude of any fields because we don't know what altitudes people are finding them at yet!

Come on you lucky Lib finders, what altitudes are they fruiting at, at the moment?...

Yea, what altitude are they popping up at?

Let's just say between 400-500m.

I've been finding mine in the altitude range of 900-1200 feet, think thats around 290-400 metres. Having said that, I've not looked lower down yet, or any higher for that matter.
I wouldn't expect to find them any lower near me for a week or two yet- at least not in any numbers.
I'm pleased that there are a few more people out looking. I always enjoy looking for the early ones; hunting at summer temperatures is so much nicer than when its 6 degrees in November.

Hey matey, I moved to Glasgow last year and last season I drove to campsie glenn and climbed a fell lookin for libs, this was peak season by my reckoning and I only found a few, very surprised, lots of mushrooms but very minimal libs, think I got 20 or something. I wouldn't hold your breath at all if you went now, but I only climbed one fell, probably the most obvious one to climb. Nice views of Glasgow up there though! I hope you find some but Im doubtful.

I have looked in my "indicator" spot, if theyre there then season has started, it does usually fruit in mid - end August, but none were there, no libs, not even any other kind of fungus. That was in North East England.

I think you must be a worse skim reader than me. It was only 5 posts before you asked. Quoted 3 posts before!

EDIT: He's in the Peak District though so he's got a fair bit of altitude behind him. Even though it was on the last page you're clearly never going to find it so I might as well tell you: he said around 400-500m above sea level

The only way of knowing is by getting out there to look.
I think it's still a bit warm, but you might be in luck.

I think fields with sedge grasses (rush-like marsh plants) are the places to look, so maybe nearby water is good? not sure...

I'm going to wait a bit, temps have picked up here in recent weeks.

Sedge grass and sheep is a good mix, and nearby water like little creeks
are helpful in keeping nice humid conditions. Regarding temps I'm seeing
fruits popping up now even when it's been 25 degrees for a week, so I guess
they are able to grow as long as the humidity stays high enough. I don't
live in the UK though. You guys have such vast amounts of sheep pastures, should
be enough to feed the entire nation many times over...

hungrygoldfish is finding them in the Peaks at the moment so Derbyshire is looking good. Elevation helps a lot this early in the year - he says he's finding them between 400-500m above sea level. And yeah sedge grass and sheep fields after the rains. Particularly sheep fields which have been sheep fields for many years.

Temps are 14 - 19C.
I suspect it's a bit early still, but might have a peek anyway.

Success!!!!

I went out looking on a hill near Glasgow, the hill is the view I have from my office everyday when I'm at work. I only really went for the walk, obviously the fact that libs may be out was on my mind a little, but it wasn't the reason I went, I stumbled upon 2, heres the pics of the first and biggest one, the other was a baby. Quite long stems as long grass up there! longer grass means bigger libs in my experience.

Just got a text from a friend to say that he found 80 today after stopping whilst driving back from "Reeth" to the north east England. This won't be bullshit. He reckons he just took a look in a random field and found 80 along side a wall in the space of 10 mins.

It sounds like they are being found a bit more widely in the UK now.
I took an early walk today in a spot I've not looked in before this year.
This spot is at an altitude of around 700 feet, so could still be described as upland. I saw just a few libs, probably in the region of 10 or fifteen, over the course of a half hour walk, but it does indicate to me that they are starting to spread beyond the very localised early season spots.

Yep!!

At the moment I'm thinking I'm going to go to make the trip down from Glasgow back to the North East next weekend, then to the North Yorkshire dales to pick the newly found field that my friend found. It sounds like it is gonna fruit shuitloads! can't wait to see it in a couple months either. I will post picks on here!

There out in the moors , found a few yesterday at higher altitude , Pins and younger fruit are a bit hard to spot due to there olive colour and the surrounding landscape but with the warmer temps this last week there were a few white caps .

I would still wait a few more weeks before going hunting in my local spots .

Hi
First post but this thread made me want to register. Long time lover of psylocibe and more so the older i get. Want to learn more about general edibles as i go but love searching for liberties each season.
I am in North Ayrshire on the West Coast so we are blessed with plenty of grazing fields and moorland ideal for shrooms. If anything the only drawback may be the milder conditions with the gulf stream.
Anyway, i was sure i spotted some in May this year that has made me keep my eyes opened since. However, over the past week i have visited my favourite spot (250 metres well grazed moorland with plenty of patches of grazed then long grasses). Nothing early in the week (although some other shrooms about) but i had a good look yesterday and only came away with 3 caps.
Went to a slightly lower location (200 metres according to my geo tag) that has yeilded for me in the past today and came away with around 40 after an hours searching. Very spread out and only in villages of 3 to 4 max. Usually when i ma here you can find villages (my name for clumps of fruit ;-) of upto 10 at a time. Once you find the vein it can then lead to many other villages and a good harvest.

So i definitely think the season has begun but the temps are still a bit on the high side even though we have had plenty of rain. I will be visiting on/off over the next week or so to see how it goes and will let you know. Have a couple of pics from today but not next to a newspaper so upto you whether you believe me or not....my crop is drying out at the moment ;-)

Thanks for the reports and info.

Welcome to the Shroomery Psyman.
I think another couple of weeks will see the season start, night temps are forecast to fall below 10C soon.
I'll update this thread if I find any in my usual spot.

Oh no, don't say that... it's 18C here, past week has been about the warmest it's been all summer.

My field was all marshy and a bit flooded as well, hope that doesn't kill the mycelium :frown:

Just been for a run up to a spot i picked a lot from last year. Managed to find around 40 in the first field i passed. I left them by a rock so I could collect them on the way back down from the top of the moor. I live top end of the North york moors btw.

Its weird because i never usually find them in that field, normally the fields that are higher up. You would think it would be vice-versa this time of year.

They were all in one patch. Hidden in amongst the more lush looking grass of about 5 inches. The season is well under way and its still fairly warm.

My car temp was about 14.5 Celsius when i was leaving at about 5.30. It was lashing it down so will let you know of anymore finds when i go back at the weekend. Will also check my other fields.

Hey I just wanted to mention there is an obscure mushroom documentary from 1980, VHS rip that is from UK that is pretty darn good actually with slow motion photography and all that. Even has interviews with Michael Madelin of Bristol University

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Francis_Madelin

http://avaxhome.ws/video/Format/documentary/Rotten_Worlds.html

or direct download links

I'm pretty sure it would not be a problem putting this on Youtube, since it's so obscure and old. It also includes the whole cow dung reproduction process which is part of this thread

update, and there it is

turns out that it is owned by Sonocairo, whoever the hell that is but it's not a problem  they're letting it stay

Hiya people well I had my first taster today.. had to pop out somewhere and noticed some fields and a mystical looking landmark near it so it had the cues : ) Is our country side awesome or what ?

I stumbled on a bizarre crumbling stately home style structure in the middle of nowhere, like it came out of the ground itself. Love that kind of thing in middle of nowhere down 1 lane, tree cannopied country lanes. All part of it.

No sheep at this place though so I found nowt, vert dry but it was a nice walk in a new place and whetted my appetite a bit. Glad to see people up north are starting.

Lovely spot igCorcaigh  beautiful.

I've checked a few spots this week, and above 900 feet there are quite a lot of caps out, but still only prolific in tight early season localities.
In other places both at altitude, and lower- down to around 600 feet, there are just occasional single caps showing.
The season for edibles seems to be getting good now too.

We have loads and loads of mystical landmarks in the peaks such as stone circles, Cairn, lows etc all of which are around lib fields...not sure if there is a connection but I like to think that the bronze age people were going round collection libs like we are now.

Perfect weather by the way for anyone wanting to go hunting- a weekend full of rain plus a cold but sunny morning today- it's my one day off work today so I'm going looking for oysters

Wow that sounds cool, I really want to go. They must have eaten them because food was so much less plentiful and they must of knocked their socks off

As a primitive human, how could you not attribute that kind of experience to mystical higher powers? I'd build a temple next to the field :tongue2:

My plan for this year was to chart all of the ancient mystical sites in Derbyshire and see how far libs and other psychoactive materials grow from them and see if there is a link...too many variables I think...plus I have a lot less time this year...would be a good project to do though (think it's classed as Ethnomycology) and has probably been done before me...

Hi guys,
Glad to hear some of you are starting to find some. I know we aren't meant to talk about specific locations, but speaking generally, has anyone been lucky yet in the south east? I know season usually starts later down here but I'm wondering whether its worth a hunt yet?

Cheers

been around a few fields today, nthing in my usual field how ever i have found out that there is a ancient stone circle in the field although it snt very noticeable unless you look for it but it is a very interesting theory, i have a book with walks around lots of the old sacred sites so may well put a few hours into looking

Went out looking in a couple of spots at the weekend, weather was too bad to go to the spots I know are really good, only found three.

However my friend had 70 from a pick the previous weekend, in the good field that we would have gone to if it wasn't pissing down. So we had a nice mild trip on 35 each, started off in my friends garage, which took on a kind of tropical feel, then off for a walk to the river. Good times, but better trips to be had, I think the best trips are when you push your comfort zone a bit, part of the buzz is from the element of surprise I would say, more to be had
