Are my Golden Teacher BRF cakes contaminated? ( PICS )
    #16263033 - 05/21/12 04:14 PM (1 year, 9 hours ago)

I posted the pictures on my last post and someone said could possibly be cobweb?
The white on the cakes is sooo fluffy.
Almost like a small animal, lol. It is pure white and looks pretty.
Here are a few pictures. Any help is appreciated.

yes, there is nothing but contamination in those photos... just wait until you get a third opinion on this but if I were you I toss all that stuff in the garbage... the cakes, the tub and the perlite all in the garbage.

a non shroomery vendor and the sad thing is i still have another syringe of it.
i can give the name if you'd like but idk if i'm allowed to discuss non-shroomery vendors on here.
the jars were moved around and transported quite a bit and i didn't use a glove box.

about to do another 12 cakes later today and if they turn out like this i may cry.
advice?

if you got them from spores 101 those spores are garbage... if I were you I would get some rye or popcorn and inoculate on those grains. Make sure you pressure cook for AT LEAST 90 minutes THATS 90 MINUTES FROM THE TIME YOU REACH FULL PRESSURE.
When your jars are inoculated set them aside and don't touch them don't even look at them for a good two weeks, let them be.
If the problem is the crappy spore syringe then you're doomed form the start !!
If you ever try grains get your spores either form a fellow shroomerite or any shroomery approved vendor.

Now Doc_T might come in here and tell you popcorn sucks but it doesn't IT RULES !!! if you follow the tek properly !!!

The spore syringe came from the spore store.
I know they've had bad reviews but everything seemed okay for quite a while.
I'm sure it was me that had something to do with it.

The tek i followed told me to set a wash rag on the bottom of the pan, fill water halfway up the jars and boil then drop to low heat for an hour.

Did that and injected the spores after running the syringe under a flame.
Probably didn't flame it long enough.

But as of right now you're sure this is bad? It just looks so white fluffy and pretty. I've never seen mold that looked so sexy. Mind blowing :frown:

boiling wont kill shit you HAVE to pressure cook them in a pressure cooker.
I suggest you watch this video for proper techniques to growing mushrooms... very informative and very thorough.
WATCH IT ITS WORTH IT.

That's mycelium. It's because you have them directly on the perlite and they are trying to colonize it. Or are you just referring to the top? You could try a squirt of peroxide on it. If it's cobweb that would make it disappear.

Okay, great. Well in a little bit i will be removing it from the perlite and adding tin foil to the bottom of it.
Will then get rid of the excess myc on the perlite.

Kizzle, how sure are you that it's not cobweb from the pictures you've seen?
It's bright white and fluffy almost hair like. Not grey and patchy.

Looks like mold.  Toss the cakes and get a pressure cooker.

I am not sure I would blame the spores yet, there seem to be problems with your technique.  The spores might be fine.  Squirt some of the spore syringe onto agar plates.

Unlike pasteurization, sterilization is never the cause of mold. Even boiling temps are at least 50 degrees above what is need to kill mold and mold spores.

mycelium can look different depending on what it's colonizing. You can't make out the picture too well but you can make it out enough to say the top is probably mycelium or cobweb so the peroxide is worth a try.

judging by all the ''mycelium'' growing around the cake I can tell they've been in the tub for a while... still no hyphal knots, still no pins... probably contamination !!!

THROW OUT YOUR CONTAMINATED KIT AND START OVER WITH A PRESSURE COOKER

brah, they've been in the box for only 2 days.
It is growing on the outside of the cake, not on the perlite guys.
I will take more pictures when i remove it from the perlite.
