Maybe so. But if it can only truly be brought out with copious amounts of L, what's the point? I can name plenty of amazing bands off the top of my head that make me want to shed tears sober or not.
I dunno, I get what you guys are saying, but I think they're so hyped though.

I'm with you there man, honestly to me it sounds like pg-13 urban shaman music or something, would much prefer some sitar music and world music to shpongle...but to each his own I suppose.

OP, you might just not like Shpongle. It's perfectly normal. Though I gotta say, I didn't like Shpongle at first either, and then it grew on me... it's really deeply trippy music.

Shpongle on shrooms is like sitting in the middle of the band. The sound surrounds you and takes shape. Its awesome.

When I listened to it tripping was sorta when I quit listening to it.
I do like it, and some tracks are exceptionally badass, but shpongle certainly does not epitomize "psychedelic" music. ..

I agree, Shpongle just doesn't do it for me when I'm tripping. I think its OK music, but just isn't what I'd prefer to listen to.

I can understand that. I was a huuuge Dead fan for a while. While sober, I was always thinking something along the lines of: "man this would be great while tripping!"
And then I listen while I trip, and have to turn it off because I have no desire like I thought I would.
I guess we let our imaginations get the best of us.

id just like to point out that i think its awesome that people are discussing music here without being jerks at all.
shpongle is very good, i like how different the instruments are, the vocals are usually pretty sweet and the vibe in general is pretty neat. Plus they are all very talented musicians.
and personally i prefer to listen to shpongle stoned rather than tripping

Yeah sometimes I hear music and I'm like "aw shit I have to hear this tripping!" and I hear it tripping and its not all that great. I think Black Moth Super Rainbow would be good for tripping music, their instruments look big, old and crazy. But they could be the same thing as Shpongle how you think it would be good but then you hear it tripping and you're just alittle disappointed.
And yeah Shpongle stoned > tripping.

I always feel let down(when tripping) when I know a song is going to play, it just loses it's impact imo, thats why I like to make really random playlists.

thanks! it's not my favorite album from them but the art is sweet. I think my favorite is feels, maybe just because of banshee beat. It's hard to choose though, all of their albums have different emotions that I associate with them.
THE BOOKS! hell yeah they are an incredible group, very unique. BMSR is amazing as well, nobody sounds even close to either of those two.

Sung Tongs might be my favorite. Or Campfire Songs perhaps? I like they're old acoustic stuff because the have the same ambient atmosphere unique to them but done all acoustically, which shows serious talent. I didn't like Meriweather for a long time but it's great. I know they have a new one but I haven't heard it yet.

I can understand why people don't enjoy shpongle. First time I heard em I was like "Uhhhh ok" but once I started listening to their whole discography the more I started to enjoy them, and then after listening to then while on some acid, the music just takes on a whole new perspective and clicks. Every song has elements that pop out while you're tripping that you wouldn't hear while sober imo.

aside the fact its music made for tripping, as a musician Simon posford is a musical ge.ius... the mastery this guy displays and utter command this guy has over music is incredible, he's like the electronic beethoven. there are plenty of other psy acts but few come close to replicating a psychedelic experience (which would be damn near impossible!) through music. the guy is a fucking freak of nature and i think his gift is coming from somewhere far away. freaky stuff.

I find Shpongle to be a little more 'musical' (for lack of a better term) than lots of brain melting music. Don't get me wrong, I do see the musicality in electronic music..but IMO Shpongle seems a little more organic. The album 'Nothing Lasts...But Nothing Is Lost' is the one that turned me on in a big way.

I think Pink Floyd is overrated
Shpongle to me is pure sex.
You have to at least listen to Are you Shpongled? while the sun is rising on a hefty dose of L once in your life
You don't have to be on drugs to appreciate it. But I'm fairly convinced the first couple albums at least, were written for people on, and while under the influence of psychedelics

I had a group of friends who did not "get" Shpongle. So I bought them all tickets (6 people) to go see a Shpongle DJ set in the mountains, and dosed all of them with LSD, shrooms and gave them all some DMT at the right moments. Three of them cried during the show, tears of happiness. All of them enjoyed it thoroughly and told me that it was one of the best shows of any kind they had ever been to. That night he played a 3 hour set.
That was my fourth time seeing Simon Posford play. I'm a huge fan. I wasn't a huge fan until a friend brought me to a show of his.
Shpongle is definitely made for the psychedelic scene, but you don't need to be high to enjoy his deep and complex sound. It might lack the melody that most people are used to in popular music, but where there is a lack of easily recognizable melody, there is a universe of harmony. He is best served live, and once you see him in a communal setting you cannot help but be a fan. His music is carefully, passively and quietly absolutely mind blowing.

Agreed x1000 on every count. I loved Shpongle to death before but live blows my mind every time.
Seeing the Shpongletron on LSD is probably the best live performance I've ever seen.
Really good artists sound better live then they do on their albums. Shpongle takes that to a new level.

I guess it's just not the music that sinks in for me. I listen to it and I find it boring, I can think of a hundred other bands that can do the same sounds but better.
NOT TRYING TO BE OFFENSIVE, LIKE WHAT YOU LIKE. THIS IS A PERSONAL OPINION
Another factor could be that I'm not the biggest fan of synthesizers to an extent.
Give me this or this or this or this!
I don't like anything from Pink Floyd that came after Dark Side, and what I do like is with Syd Barrett. Now that's some true raunchy dark psychedelic! Anything else I can do without.
But yes, since we are aware that personal preference comes into play, as it would with any music discussion, I guess my taste buds point me in a different direction. I'm happy that Shpongle fans enjoy Shpongle, and if someone wants to buy me a ticket for a show, I won't complain!

Shpongle is overrated.
for some reason, every keep mentioning the fact that you need drugs to enjoy a live show and to "see" what he's all about.
that spells out, overrated, too me.
plus, all those sounds he makes.

Sounds like flashy guitar playing to me  gets cooler half way through though.
Here's a good instrumental progressive rock band, and the album is based around an acid trip at that. I listened to it a bit while tripping and it was a little too intense.Quote:

I usually prefer silent areas of a trip for sure but I goddamn need music at some point.
I've tripped many times to many different types of music. Some elevates your trip to new levels, some brings it to weird fucking places.
It mainly depends on your personal mind-state. But yeah I don't really like 90% of black metal sober so it makes sense I don't listen to it tripping either.

Yeah almost all of my trips have been outside. Sometimes, I need some good walking music! Other times, I enjoy the wind in the trees. Well said, Shroomism.

I fell asleep listening to the three albums those songs are from in addition to Brian Eno's Music for Airports almost every night for at least a year. They are so subtle in their beauty, that's that I love about ambient.

well, i said they were typical sounding. Shpongle, at least uses some unique (as unique as psytrance and goa can...) sample's and some unique beats.
plus, the whole Goa, sitar trance, and middle eastern sound works for the concept.
1200 Micrograms just sound like your usual trance... like extra trance-y Mortal Kombat, the Movie music.
and same with Hallucinogen, practically sounding the same, only less "harsh".
Younger Brother at least sounds different from his other work. but it still isn't progressive, much, at all... (at least the song you posted) it's one single melody just stretched out... i like the harmony though, at least it's not just your typical "pilled-out" hyper trance with no different harmony then the other 1000'd of trance tracks.
at LEAST Younger Brother sounds different. plus, at least the song you posted progresses to different points in the composition. not just staying the lock-step of a 4/4 beat.
still sounds like Active Child though, at some point... like it's just not even trying to be dance, anymore. LOL
and i had Are You Shpongled before... i got bored of it, because the album wasn't all great. some of the songs sounded like throw away's to me.

First heard about Shpongle on here back in 2001 ish. Loved it back then.
Not really feeling them so much now. Not to say they don't make amazing music. Even saw them Live in full band mode twice.
If I had one criticism of them then I guess it would be that they are too cliché psychedelic for my tastes. Kinda feel the same way about Alex Grey and a lot of the old stuff I was into. Such is life I guess.

The appeal for me largely is music that does half the tripping for you then when you combine that with hallucinogens and remote venues out in the wilderness it's a fucking hell of a party. There is a loose network of promoters, producers, and fans in various countries and the experience allows for travel and exchange of ideas facilitating friendships through the common interests of this music internationally. It would be much easier to name the countries that are not hosting a psytrance event this summer. check out mushroom magazine's summer festival guide in the April 2012 issue. Also to give it a fair chance really takes the right atmosphere, mood and a good selection. Listening to Psytrance on a computer or headphones is a lot different than listening to it on a 14,000 watt sound system in some exotic remote location outdoors while tripping balls
