Sure there were. We just don't usually call them birds.

From the quoted wikipage, emphasis mine:

Quote:

At the end of the Cretaceous Period, all saurischians except the birds became extinct.

Alright, there weren't any feathered (real feathers that can support flight), beaked birds around in the jurassic age. That went virtually unchanged until today. Sorry to be all anal, it's my old dinosaur obsession coming back after 18 years. I'm not an expert, but I'm very sure Herons are more recent than the dinosaur age.

I mean, the Heron is a classic bird, suave and smooth, if a bit conservative and old-fashioned. It's certainly not archaic like any old archaeopteryx.

They are among the oldest of the (true, modern) birds. So, pretty close to (classic, standard) dinosaurs, IMHO.
Let's say we're both right.

Glad you heroin guys are enjoying the thread, I hoped the title would do that.

I worked as a river guide in an area that literally had an overpopulation of Herons because no one hunted them.

Herons and big horn sheep. I could care less I've seen so many of them.

When I worked for the department of fisheries and oceans, we had fish in these huge holding tanks. The herons would spear them through the netting, but since they couldn't get the fish out, they'd just take a large chunk out of them. They'd keep doing that until they got their fill and then the next day I'd be forced to use a large fishing net to gather all the corpses of the dead fish left behind.

Nice lookin birds, but they're really one of mother nature's bastards.

they eat all of the expensive koi out of the beautiful ponds my cousin created. they're pretty oportunistic. i've never had a problem with them yet, but i'm thinking of puting in ponds here since i have year round massive amounts of the best srping water on the planet. it really is the best, and i fear nestle is going to come here someday and pump above me in the nat forest. that would be the absolute last straw for me. they're operation would not work here...

Try the suburbs.  Every drainage pond seems to have a pair.

I've been on canoe trips where everyone would want to stop when we saw a heron.  drove me nuts. cool bird but I see them every day.

I once saw a Bald Eagle swoop down and snatch a baby Canada Goose in flurry of feathers.

Yeah I can't stand 'em shittin' everywhere and eatin' all the grass.

I've got this deep hatred for geese because when I was like a year
old we had some geese that would chase me around the yard and bite my ass...
Right through the diaper!!! Fuckers, I haven't been the same since.
