It would, but those are hilar appendages, not germ pores.

Ok, I really think this is Gymnopilus sapineus. I've been up and down the svims key( anyone got something for the east coast?)
This suggestions makes two assumptions that are not strongly supported by the evidence thus far 1) immature species (not pictured) have a fugacious veil 2) there is at least SOME degree of minute green bruising
I would be thrilled to consider some other suggestions. We've got pics, we've got micrographs, Si se puede!

i'm fairly certain it is not sapineus. here is a good sapineus observation... www.mushroomobserver.org/83541 taken at the end of last year. sapineus tends to fruit later in the year i've come to notice.
i'm leaning towards an undescribed sp..
i am going to try to write a key for Florida by the end of the year.

I'm not sure that I agree with Kuo on combining sapineus and penetrans. It seems like sapineus is sometimes described with a scaled cap whereas penetrans is exclusively described with a glabrous cap.
Am I totally off base here? Is it commonly accepted that sapineus and penetrans are the same species?
EDIT: These two species are described as being very close to each other genetically, but how close? Any one have a link?

Use the keys in the Hesler monograph.

Wow. So penetrans and sapineus are genetically inseparable. One thing pointed out in that study is that both occur on conifer. Previously I was looking at descriptions that maintained otherwise.
So its probably not sapineus then.
Here's an excerpt from that study for anyone that didn't feel like reading the whole thing-
The nevadensis-penetrans clade. The three species forming this complex are macromorphologically similar but they display some differences in micromorphology. For example, the pleurocystidia in G. nevadensis are larger than the cheilocystidia while in the other two species the pleurocystidia are of similar size or more often, smaller than the cheilocystidia. Gymnopilus nevadensis is rare and known only from México, while the other two species are commonly encountered and distributed worldwide. Gymnopilus penetrans and G. sapineus are very similar to each otherboth macro- and micromorphologically and occur in similar habitats (i.e., onbranches and logs in coniferous or temperate forests). The primary differences between these two species are in the ornamentation of the pileus, being fibrillose and lacking pileocystidia in the former and squamulose with poorly differentiated pileocystidia in the latter. They are grouped together with a 100% bootstrap and posterior probability (Figs. 1 and 2). Further studies are needed to confirm if they are conspecific or separate species.

fresh thoughts are more than welcome man... i might hit the woods where i found these this evening (if i can muster up the energy). maybe i can find a couple more samples.
thanks for the read Alan. any idea on how i could about getting the monograph? the best i could find is a couple of pages on the shroomery. anyone have a .pdf???
thanks again.
on another note. i'm thinking about dedicating this thread to Gymnopilus. kind of a place to study the genus and whatnot. what does everyone think?? i'd love to see some Gymnopilus sp. from other areas. it is a very understudied genus imo.
